I am interested in creating a skin duplicating the RF-51 my father flew in Korea "Miss Freckleface". I've found some .BMP files for the P-51, but I'm not sure of the best way to change them to create the necessary nose art and squadron markings. The changes I made to it thus far don't seem to show up in the game when I select it. I'm not sure if I'm altering the right .BMP files. Would someone take a moment or two to tell me how best to accomplish this .... I'd really appreciate it!

Cool, that's great. I'll have to scan the photos (they're black and white and 50 years old so I'm not sure about the outcome), but I'll definately email them to you and see what you can come up with. Thanks so much!

Wow, fantastic! You do VERY nice work. I'd have to say it's **** near perfect. Thanks so much for your time and effort on this. It'd be really cool if people like this skin and decide to use it! Even though it's from Korea and not WW2, it is 100% historically correct. I'm just floored right now. =) My dad would be proud!

On the topic of skinning, how do you do it? I'd like to get into it, but no idea where to start, what to use, how to do it etc.

Cheers,
HBR

1 ok well for starters you need to have a program like adobe photoshop or paintshop pro
somthing that can allow you to add layers to the void skin .BMP file
2 then you just start adding the layers with the colours that you want if you look around there are some templates that people have made that you can add to but i find it more fun to make my own
(hint you need to move the layers around in order so that they show up in the fasion that you want them to appear on your skin)
3 there are also tutorial skins out there that show you what areas of the plane skin are coloured by a spacific area on the .BMP file load the coloured template into the plane folder and then select it as a skin then go fly it and it will show you what areas of the .bmp file coloured what areas of the 3d plane
4 when you know this then you can start to paint your plane the
5 other important part is that in these programs you work in RGB colour and you must save the file as a .BMP file and then open the .bmp file you just made and change the image mode to (indexed) from RGB colour or you won't see the skin when you open your game and go to select the skin you just made

hope this sheds some light on skinning for you
it is not as easy as some might think
