View Full Version : Changing flyable planes in "retail DGen" campaigns

Maybe there's some plane that has a special place in my heart, but it's not available in any of the "retail version DGen" campaigns.

Maybe it would be fun to fly a USSR A-20 or B-25 campaign.

I've tried using the downloadable Dgen 3.11 but i can't get it to work properly(and i'm not patient enough to thorougly learn how it works).

So, i recall reading in some post(forgot it's name)that there was a way to add/remove/change available flyable planes in the campaigns by altering a file that is opened in for instance WordPad. Where do i find the file/s?
How does it work?
How are the plane names supposed to be spelled(i assume they're very case sensitive)?
One guess is to "copy" the names from the skin folders, is that correct?

Thanks in advance

Go to your Dgen folder and look for the planes files, (ex. "planesRuB.dat" covers the russian bombers campaign).

You can open up the .dat folder and edit it with wordpad.

plane names exactly as they should appear in the planes***.dat file can be found in the message files (ex. sk_messageen.dat probably slovakian messages in english) scroll down quite aways to find the title 'plane names to appear in briefing' you want the names on the LEFT. the pf_message files have the pacific planes. make sure the name you use is a flyable plane!

type the name of the plane you want under the title of the campaign you want it in, in the nationality you want it in (ex. if you want B-25 campaign at Lvov in the bomber campaign instead of a tb-3 you type the name under the header Lvov41H in the planesRuB.dat file.

You have to mess with it a little bit to get to know where and what you can change, back everything up! the names for the planes you mentioned are A_20G and B_25J1 I believe. hope this helps!

oh yeah, to make sure it works, when you go to pick your plane by clicking on the plane name next to the campaign you picked in the game, you should see the plane you want if it doesn't work, you won't see anything and you probably messed up.

Wow, it works just fine and it's even so simple that even i managed to get it right on my first test.

Thanks!

Now i'm starting to run in to some problems, i can't find the proper names in any of the messages files for some of the flyables i'd like to try in a campaign;

YP-80 for the USAAF Fighter Japan campaign:
I've been trying YP_80 , YP_80A , P_80(all of them just showed an empty slot or no slot at all)and finally P_80A , which shows up "properly" when i choose plane type for the campaign, but when i click "generate" i get to a blank briefing screen, with no waypoints on the map, when i click "arming" nothing happens and when i click "fly" i just get "mission failed to load" because it couldn't find a mission.

Go-229 A1 for the Luftwaffe Berlin Fighter campaigns:
I tried GO_229A1 and it seemed to work at first, it shows up properly in the menu of selectable planes but when i click "generate" nothing happens.

So, is there a secret hideout where the proper names of some of the planes hide?

While i'm at it i might as well ask about the name of the various Spitfire Mk.VIII variants.
I can't find that one either, i'm going to try SPITFIRE8 for the basic version and se if it works, but i'll try that tomorrow, now i have to get some sleep.

I got the P_80A to work but first I had to
download Dgen 3152. It was at simhq airwarfare
section.

here's a list of the planes from this forum:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=26310365&m=4871026732

You'll notice that the p-80 and go-229a1 are not usable in dgen, sorry, I had forgotten all about this. But newer builds may have fixed this.

They DO work on DCG, I tried the Go-229 in the fighter(center) 1945 berlin campaign and it worked. DCG allows you to change the plane with their interface no hassle. although you could still use the traditional method.

I honestly advise learning how DCG works or try to get it to work if you can't. it's truly the best third party program for this sim.

One thing i just noticed while flying the I-185 M82 in a "Sturmovik" campaign is that the types of missions i get are more based on choice of aircraft rather than the "type" of campaign i've added it to. All of the maybe three or four missions i've flown so far have been escort and air-patrol, not a single ground pounding mission.

Has anyone else noticed this slightly annoying "bug"?

Its not a bug, its how DGen was designed; mission types are assigned based on aircraft type. The major difference between bomber and fighter campaign is the mission design; missions in the bomber campaigns tend to have fewer fighters and/or aircraft in general than similar missions in the fighter campaign. To make the I-185 a bomber, you have to define it as such in the appropriate class.dat file.

I've been looking for those classesXXX.dat files in my game folder with the phrase "classes" using the file search for windows and i only found three files;
classesIN1, classesRoA and classesSkA

Another way is to use Shift_E's execellent Quick Mission Tuner. Can change planes in missions and campaigns. See here for info and download.
