Hello,

Firstly I am not a military person or pilot, so please excuse me if I don't know how to quite write the question.

I would like to ask when and how someone Salute's ? and also the methods used ?
is it ..

A, When you shoot down your opponent ?

B, When you get shot down by your opponent ?

C, After a tough and challenging fight ?

D, Because the other person uses it you have to use it too ?

E, as you see fit ?

F, all of these plus others ?

Do you write "Salute", "S!" , "<S", "<S>", or are the last 3 sware words ?.

I look to the community for enrichment of the gaming experience.

Thanks in advance.

A, B, C - that`s my take at it. Doesn`t matter which form you going to choose...S! or whatever. I consider it as a sign of respect /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Easy.

When you mean it.

And S! is the recognised form.

I use to S!~ every time i shot some one down or vice versa. But a couple of times i got a responce that was not very polight,

So now i only S!~ when im in a good fight with someone. If i get shot down right away then i dont S!~. I say GK meaning Good Kill. If i shoot someone down right away i say nothing, only if it was a good fight.

Some, not all people will use it as a smart remark. Just think a bit before you type.

Don't put the exclamation after the S. It's too Gomer Pyle.

You really only need to S when you enter or leave the server. When you are fighting, it's "gk" "gs" "ty"

Sometimes these people "S" so much it's like that game where the gopher heads keep popping up and you have to keep smashing them down with a hammer. If you S too much it takes away from the value. Next thing you know people are S'ing like popcorn popping, it's really quite annoying. If you didn't know any better you would think S was the sign of the snake and they were worshipping the devil.

I use ~S~ when saluting.

As far as when is concerned, I just get a feel for the crowd. Some nights no one salutes other nights everyone does. I feel a good fight is the best time for a salute. Sneaking up on someone's six is fine and honorable, it gets the job done, but it's less deserving than a long hard fought battle, IMO.

The salute varies in form

~S~
S!
S

and maybe a few other ways.

Saluting is usually done when entering a room or chat and before exiting a room or chat. It is done mainly to show a form of respect for everyone. Seperate from that for squad or military purposes at anytime it is proper to salute a higher rank.

When you get shot down a salute would not be necessary usually whats better would be

GK for good kill they usually respond with TY for thank you.

S!

Is it rude not to S back

XyZspineZyX

I think its C only its not needed that someone is downed .

Mainly its a sign of respect to the other Pilot .

But its abused badly online some use it on any encounter even when just B&Z 1 pass was enough and no real DF has developed.

Some are funny enough to use it after vulching planes on take off or landing really a challenge.

So it has developed to a better "hi i shoot you plz respect me" phrase.

Still some exceptions are there.

it seems like some people use the S! as many time as humanly possible . RJB was right, it definitely loses its effectiveness if you use it after every twitch you make in the game

S!.............well I am starting my FB career coming from the cfs(1-2) series on the Zone. In that venue a S! is used when entering a room or just as a general greeting in the zone lobby or in the form of a zone message, it is almost never used during or after dogfights. When I ventured into FB on HyperLobby I was in a room with a sqd that <<<<<<<S>>>>>>>> or something like that everytime they shot you down, which for me was many times.............lol. Anyhow, at first I thought of it as kind of a taunt.......but that was just me, I found out later that indeed it is a show or respect etc. In the 54th rooms you will not see the S! flying, we S! when we enter a room and that's it. So if you didn't get a S! from us and wanted one.........so sorry.........S!

Thanks to all,

Interesting to see all the contexts of use!

I think as a guide for myself, I will use "Salute" only after a battle well fought and as a sign of respect to a worthy opponent ?.

This way I think it means respect which has been recognised and earned by actions, rather than just because others use it.

I think Salute can mean something and nothing dependant upon interpretation of the individuals concerned, but I personally would like it to mean something like recognition of skill and respect.

Is this good, bad, right or rong of me to use it in such a way ?

As it is considered a sign of respect I like to make the salutee earn it. If I am in a fight with someone and he puts the fear into me and makes me work above and beyond to finally get the kill I will S! him. Also sometimes I will salute a non kill. For instance finding a he111 all alone if I where to repeatedly make high speed passes untill my ammo was gone with the poor bomber not being able to defend himself properly. As he limped away into the sunset battered and broken I would Salute him.
THE MOST IMPORTANT SALUTE ONLINE IS "The one finger S!" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
