Magnificent movie!!!! Raises the bar for IL2 movies to an unprecedented height. The skilled use of greenscreening, compositing, is amazing, bringing "Life" to the IL2 world. Six stars!

Fantastic Movie, no doubt about that.

Too bad that Mr. Knoke was some sort of convinced Nazi, continuing his career after the war in a small facist party that was even elected into the parliamment of one of our federal states until it was prohibited in 1952. So much for the denazification...

That guy is anything but suited as a "role model".

Opinions are like......... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Nobody here is judging his politics just his Luftwaffe career.

I would hope that we do not turn this thread into a political discussion...that's always Very Sad when it happens on these UBI forums (or elsewhere)...

I will notethat your use of "some sort of convinced nazi" is at a minimum simplistic and imprecise, and lacks of any criteria for the judgment made. [Rudel is another story completely]

This kid was 17 when he was in Luftwaffe fighter school/training; 18 when he flew in operation Barbarossa; 19 when given command of a Staffel (equivalent to a USAAF Squadron); 21 when grounded, I assume because of injuries; and still a youngster of 22 (by a mere month)when the war ended. Who among us on this forum have done so much, risked so much (including death), by such an early age? In the U.S., he wouldn't have been old enough to buy a beer throughout his entire LW combat career. His military achievements were/are remarkable! imho

Watched the vid. It was pretty good. Voice acting was great. I thought the acting was somewhat wooden, for instance, the pilot didn`t really look that bothered when his plane was on fire and he had to bail. More desperation and grimacing needed there. He also didn`t look quite right in his parachute; he didn`t look like he was `hanging`.

Anyway, it reminded me of the book and their succes with actually bombing a B17 flight ( I still feel sorry for those guys). Good idea, but strange how it wasn`t used more.

I think what stuck in my mind the most about Knoke was how he kept harping on about the Communist threat, literally using the whole reason for WW2 as some kind of justification for it. That feeling could not be avoided.

I liked how you used real people greenscreened onto Il-2 planes, never seen that before.

Il-2 still makes for a nice simulation with touch-ups, huh. Looks like something you'd see on the History channel.

Thanks all for the comments guys, I am happy that you like the movie.

Some interesting facts on the attack by Knoke on the Liberator of 26 Feb 1943:

· It was the first Liberator to be shot down on German soil.
· The passenger journalist killed in this incident was a famous employee of The New York Times (Robert Post) who also interviewed Roosevelt at some stage.
· The dog-tag of the tail gunner flying with the B-24 (Maisie) on its doomed flight was found in 2008 on the farm where it was downed (at the farmhouse that burned). A US historian (Jim Hamilton), who wrote a book relating to this incident, arranged the return of this dog-tag to the family. Jim also helped me with correct historical information on the movie.

Yes, next project will be on Pat Pattle, the "unrecognized" top scoring ww2 RAF fighter pilot ace. Very good book written on the life of Pattle by Barker.

I think what stuck in my mind the most about Knoke was how he kept harping on about the Communist threat, literally using the whole reason for WW2 as some kind of justification for it. That feeling could not be avoided.

Just a history lesson. The two most powerful political party's in Germany in the late 1920's and early 1930's were the National Socialists and the Communists. They literally battled in the streets and ransacked each others speeches.

Traditional German's many WWI vets felt that National Socialism was more familiar with the Prussian German system of doing things while Communism was popular with the workers. One was going to win and it was National Socialism that won but the bulls eye on the foreign influence of Communism never left. It was a battle of idealism and neither could co-exist in the long term.

That is why guy's like Knoke saw International Communism as the bogey man and in fact thought they were on some holy crusade of Europe vs Communism.

Again I know little of Knoke's post war career choices but he was a determined pilot and a skilled leader of men.

Brilliant work, biltongbru. Expertly filmed and a good story well worth telling.

Seems like you have been developing your green screen techniques over the past year or so, and have now mastered the technique. IL2 films need more content than just aircraft flying around and this is one excellent way to do so.
