like the tittle says.....10 reasons why.

10. No beer cooler.

9. Wind from open cockpit blows out you lighter when your liting a smoke.

8. You keep killing deck crews cause you let off the brakes after the chocks are out.

7. the seat is much to hard, which causes hemoroids.

6. No place to store snacks.

5. The in flight movie is AIRPLANE!

4. the P-11 is faster.

3. No bombadier, so you can't hit sh8t.

2. It has a back seat so ya have to bring that nagging wife along.

1. and the top reason the SBD sux...it's Crash_Moses's favorite ride. So it must be porked.

SBD is the suckest of the suck.

01-24-2008, 12:55 PM
Say that it was better than the Stuka. You should get at least four to five pages out of that.

01-24-2008, 01:19 PM
Not to mention that someone keeps playing pranks on me by putting boot polish on the gunsight.

I <3 the SBD.

01-24-2008, 02:59 PM
Wow I never thought about comparing it to the stuka, hmm dont have to set the dive pull out altitude, deal with the tuning fork sight and i get earaches from the dive siren. Wow what a concept, but im a stuka fan from way back, just keep the fighters off and its quite the machine, just look at its up gunning and improvements to performance etc. too bad you couldnt fit the duantless with a 2000hp engine.

Now give a moment to put on my asbestos suit......

01-24-2008, 03:04 PM
Actually, I like the Stuka too. And the Val. And the Skua.

But there's just something special about the SBD...(sigh http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif).

01-24-2008, 03:04 PM

(SBD would take a Stuka out for lunch, dinner, and midnight snack...although I would enjoy a dogfight server setup with just this sort of arrangement)

01-24-2008, 03:07 PM
How many capital ships did the other VBs sink?

Gotta love the SBD.

SBD is the kick ***-enest dive bomber of the war. Twin fifties up front, maneuverable, had a rear gun mount with the widest play, and carried a decent (1000-lb SAP/AP/HE) bomb. Fate placed it in position to deliver the greatest smack down by dive bombers in naval history at Midway. Twelve of them fought through Zeros unescorted to deliver a near-fatal cosh on SHOKAKU at Santa Cruz---if the USN had had the 1000-lb AP bomb at the time, she would have been toast. The Cadillacs of dive bombers were the SB2C Helldiver (not nearly as accurate a mount as the SBD), and the B7A2 "Grace" (which probably was the greatest dive bomber ever to fight, but there were too few of them, and the pilots were lousy). The SBD wasn't revolutionary, but it was good enough. Only steers and kweers don't like the SBD.

I'm go to say this really really quietly, so Crash dosen't hear... best divebomber.... Ar234, espescially with its fudged sight, you cant miss, and u can cruise at 680ias with 1000kg

wasn't enough for me to make my tradtional anatomically correct snow woman on the roof of the car and drive around the hood.

@R Target

Never thought of it like that! ok ya changed my mind. The Stuka is the suxxor! it's a POS and isn't worth the ball sweat from the SBD. SBD FTW!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

No we'll painatailty await the Goose stepping blue loving chart monkye's to come marching in and try to convence us that the SBD was the true POS and that the stuka is only seconded by the Me-262 in perfomance and dive bombing capabilites. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

The SBD, one of my dad's favorite planes to fly while in the Marine Corps for 30years. He said "yeah it was slow" but handled very docile with plenty of stall warning like a Hellcat. He also liked the SBD better because it was agile enough to be used for Fleet Defense unlike the Helldiver which was very heavy and sluggish to respond. He didn't like the Helldiver which is why I think he moved on to Corsairs.

I'd like to see you try to hit a squirming (not an IL-2 game sitting duck) ship with that jet! And, if you did hit its side, the bombs would bounce off because they wouldn't have enough momentum for penetration. You would never get a deck hit, and, if you did, the strike angle would send the bomb bouncing off into the sea! I grant you, the Ar 234 would have made a nasty skip bomber, but any aircraft can do that.

Ahh...ye warm me heart, lads. http://media.ubi.com/us/forum_images/gf-glomp.gif

For me, a large part of the appeal of the SBD is just the sheer history behind it. The Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal...the SBD was there. As a Marine and history buff (though not in quite the same league as Leitmotiv) the SBD stands as an icon of the PTO. I know there were better planes and if they were flyable I might have ended up singing the praises of the Avenger or the SB2C but alas...such is not the case. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

In-game it brings a tactical element to the table that you don't get with fighters. Especially on-line. I enjoy the objective based servers and I love having to navigate a course that avoids enemy fighters but also brings me to the target in a reasonable amount of time. Very satisfying to sink an enemy ship while the fighters have them engaged elseware. Besides, everybody is flying the F4U or the F6F. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I remember one night, in fact...I had just landed on our carrier and noticed a Wildcat coming in smoking like crazy. He was on his landing approach and had two Zeros hot on his tail. I pulled the SBD ahead, chocked the wheels and hopped in back. As they made passes on the F4F they would fly right over the top of me. On their last pass I waited 'till the last second and opened up. One started smoking and I took half the elevator off the other. Gawd, what a rush! That was the PacCon server I think. Great server, especially if you like carrier ops.

I've spent a considerable amount of time in the QMB sitting in the back practicing my gunnery and learning to fly backwards. I just love it when a Zero pulls up nice and easy onto my six thinking I'm easy pickins' (tip: don't fire till you see the whites of their eyes...that way you can see the look on their face. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif).

Thanks for posting that link to the Dogfights SBD episode, Kahuna. I was going to dig it out but you beat me to it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif Buzzsaw, corsair0772, and myself spent a good week trying to reproduce the SBDs fight against the three Zeros. We were passing tracks back and forth like candy. Now that was fun!

And remember...June 4th is National Hug an SBD Day.

That's been my desktop for...like...ever!

I spoke to soon, Kahuna. Your Youtube link appears to be some poor fella playing dive bomber using a kite and innertube. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Here's the link to the Dogfight episode, parts one and two. Now you'll see a real pilot in a real airplane and some real flying! (Try to incite me, will ya?)

love some SBD...

01-25-2008, 07:27 PM
That .30 cal rear gun will shoot down Zekes easily but that's about all. I tried shooting down Georges with it but could not even scratch them. I could see the flashes all over the ones I was shooting at. So I know I was hitting them well, but to no affect. They should have mounted a .50 back there.

01-25-2008, 10:30 PM

Pwns the SBD.

01-26-2008, 08:45 AM
Maybe. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif But it's not flyable! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Like using a brick house for a dive bomber. SBD pawns it in accuracy. Still, would be one heck of a challenge to use, and packs a punch. Best dive bomber/torpedo bomber of the war was the B7A2 (Grace):

01-26-2008, 03:29 PM
Wasn't the SBD the bird that pilot on Dogfights was flying when he took on that group of Zeros and not only held them off, but scored a few kills?

01-26-2008, 11:59 PM
Crash--I spoke to soon, Kahuna. Your Youtube link appears to be some poor fella playing dive bomber using a kite and innertube.

LoL--I am trying to figure out just how the hell that happened as I was watching the video of Swede dancing with the Zeros when I posted the link. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Even the japanese wanted the SBD

The majority of SBD pilots perfered flying (the SBD) over the heavier Helldiver. Most SBD pilots were expecting a new uprated SBD with a bigger engine, more range, etc- not an entirely new design like the Helldiver.
