View Full Version : Is the amazing exploding P-40E a bug or feature?

I assume it's a bug, but why does this happen?

Too much oil pressure? I noticed it climbs pretty fast at high RPM.

Am I going too fast? I've had it explode while diving at zero throttle without the P-40 shaking and speed was about 400 IAS. The red line is at 500 IAS.

Has anyone read this might be fixed in the next patch? Is there anything I can do right now to avoid the bug/feature. I'm playing a rather succusfull Russian campaign but have progressed to using the P-40 and can't move on as it keeps exploding for no apparent reason.

I assume it's a bug...

You know there are several other very weird things happening: switch off both engines when flying the 262 (try this at max. alt /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ). The a/c accelerate to more than 250kph.

I'm not sure about the 262 bug, but I'm speculating that they've modelled it as a prop plane with a fixed pitch angle and the amount of thrust and other characteristics that the jet engine would've possesed. Then, when we switch both engines off, we have drag comming in from the imaginary prop blades, and the additional drag from the large body profile of the 262. That would account for why it slows down to 250kph, roughly the same figure to which the he111 would if you don't feather props and take into account the fact that it has a larger profile than the 262.

It is a bug of the worst kind: intermittent.

The irony of Il-2's level of realism, is that they have managed to realistically recreate one of most frustrating experiences of real aircraft design; sometimes a sound design will just fall apart for no good reason, and the designers will find themselves tearing their hair out for years trying to figure out what is causing it.

Well, don't go too crazy.

After the patch, the P-40 doesn't explode anymore, and the Me-262 glides like its supposed to.

So I take it there is nothing I can do at the moment too avoid exploding and I just have to wait for the patch? It's nice to know they fixed it but I'm not sure how you know.
