I set out from Wilhelmshaven or whatever and docked at Brest. I was then set on patrol somewhere along Britain and I met a large convoy.

Maybe 12-15 ships in all, guarded by a destroyer and an armed trawler.

This is my first time meeting such a collection of ships at once and I don't know how to approach this situation. I saved yesterday before I enganged the convoy cause I knew I was gonna mess it up. I hit the trawler with a torpedo and finished it with the deck gun. Then the destroyer charged me and I sunk it with one torpedo.

By then, I was in the middle of all the ships and I didn't know what to do so I just quit.

I saved when I was pretty far away so I have time to manuveur and all if I need to. What's the best thing to do?

Well, let's see what I can figure out from what you posted. It must be mid-late 1940, since you just transferred from Wilhelmshaven to Brest. You must be in a VII, since you have a deck gun. The weather is good enough to use said deck gun, since you finished the trawler with it (I find it amazing one torpedo didn't kill the trawler outright). The convoy is now unguarded. Kill, man. Kill. Leave any ship with an American flag alone, but sink anything and everything with a British flag. Use your deck gun until you run out of ammo. Use torpedoes for the rest. Don't get too close to anything, because they will try to ram you if you do.

I happen to believe it is all in how you set up your attack and that first salvo of torps effectivness. I usually try and get myself a good ways in front of the convoy, roughly where the middle is so that when the convoy approaches I should be already set up, with them coming to me. The bigger ships are also in the middle of the convoy. Then its really a question of what you want to do. IF you can take out the escorts, I usually go for the more dangerous ones first, then you can just let the convoy sail into you in confussion. For me it is always about the first shots. If you miss the destroyer then you are in trouble, thats why its good to just let it pass you by, fire a spread at a few targets, dive go slow and try and stay in the middle of the convoy. you can then repeat the process and go back and pick of any stragglers. If you take out the destroyer, all you have to worry about is making sure your shots on the merchants are almost perfect so you dont waste any of your precious torps.
Good luck!

I say have fun with your deck gun and torpedoes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif
And just as Quillan says leave the Americans alone for now later in the war you can sink them too.

thanks for the tips. I guess I will try it once more.

It was late when I was typing this up yesterday and what I meant was my torpedo missed the trawler but I sunk it with the deck gun.

The destroyer came right at me, I waited until it was about 500 mts away and fired a torpedo that went right underneath it and exploded and broke the ship in two.

I guess i'll be trying it again right now.

In Real WII, the U-boot, try to avoid the destroyers and any other warships that escort the convoy....

Reason ----> Tonnages, the cargo-ships COUNTS.
Destroyers/trawlers/escort in EMERGENCY ONLY in case they come toward you(act quick) because they are on top of you before you know it..

try to sneak in the convoy(not from the front) but aside, if you come from the rear and if you have a stormy raining with little fog, you can sneak the convoy in the rear on surface :P (i did it) and i love it :P

but on bride daylight or clear night, sneak aside 5knots submerged and select the closes ships you want to torp, when done, switch on slow ahead with silence, and dive north and go deep... never go toward destroyers or any other sub-hunters.. they will depth-charge you bad...

I hope this will help... and dont worry, you can reload the game again and again..

You right BlueHawk, and the neutral ships dont call to destroyers and said to them "did you know that a VIIB is passing by on surface", "or are you on tea-break"?

I did that, when i was sneaking surface behind the convoy, there was 2 neutral ships(yanks) and they didn't ram me or even let the destroyers know where i at" :P so i pass them, and pick the red boats out, and dive again, and the destroyer have to pull back(searching me on the rear, when nothing is there, the destroyer went back to the front to do his duty, and i come surface again, pass the yanks again "wave to them" LOL and take another brittish ship down, and dive again...
i did that over and over till i have no torp left.... and went back to Brest.

If I´m not wrong, the way to proceed is more like Night-Crawler said. Set up your position as best as you can, with an AOB as close as possible to 90º of the general direction of the convoy. Then set up a salvo attack and fire at the proper time.
Yes, maybe it is not the best way to sink all possible ships, but it is the most realistic way to do it. I just can´t imagine a U-boat commander playing games with escorts, diving, attacking, diving again, etc...AFAIK, they just shot their torps and flew as quick as possible, avoiding any armed threat.

I hit a gigantic inbound convoy a few days ago. It was July 1940, I think. Dozens of ships, with only 1 destroyer babysitting them.

I had only half a dozen torps left and I decided I wanted to eliminate the destroyer threat. The destroyer was zigzagging ahead of the convoy but every once in a while it slowed down, waiting for the convoy the narrow the gap before continuing.

At such a point, with the destroyer about 1700m away, I fired a spread of 3 eels. The first missed. The 2nd hit amidship and caused the destroyer to buckle up in half. The 3rd hit it again, making it sink so fast, I had no time to grab a screen shot.

Then I used my remaining torps and deck gun to get rid of what I could in this convoy, before returning to Keil with only flak ammo remaining.

Here's a pic of the front of the convoy. I was already out of torps. The passenger liner ahead of me was next eliminated with my deck gun.

The nice thing is the variety. I have had a convoy that had DDs out in front right in my path. In silent mode I picked off 3 and then got two more in the convoy then sinking the armed merchant cruiser hoping to do the smaller cargos with a deck gun. The sixth escort sunk my greedy Axx!!!!!!
My next career must have gone to church 3 times a week. I ran into an unescorted convoy with 10 Torpedoes to use. I sank 6 ships in the rain and wind, great fun but I almost got run over many times. But finding another on the next patrol unescorted allowed me to bag the passanger ship, an American with 3 tankers and 3 cargo. Best tonnage day ever for me, so far, 61K.
If the Yanks want to carry supplies to meine enemy, they are fair game.
Only thing that bugged me was the convoy sailed as if I was not there. I just swaggered along and waited for them to sail right in my path. Most convoys have at least a destoyer or more but twice finding them all alone was nice for the renown!
If there is one escort, I would set him up and take him out. But, if there are more than one I would silently set up a couple of ships make a good attack and silently leave and hope to catch them up when reloaded. You can'y have a long career without making sure you are as safe as reasonably possible. U-boats were like sharks, they were looking for an easy meal, not a duel.

What you have to do now while you still have time and distance is build up speed and ram the biggest ship you see. make sure you are perpendicular to the ship. the only other option that you have in a situation such as this is to surrender and start a new career. I hope this helps. good hunting brave captain.

Patience is the key. Take the time to figure out where the destroyer and escort are patrolling. Figure out the zigzag pattern of the convoy.

I've been chasing this convoy in horrible weather for about 8 hours of real time now.
There is a Flower Corvetter in the rear, and a V&W Detroyer in the front. Visbility is about 4900m, and it is getting dark fast. I'm trying to slip in between the two of them for a night surface attack (date is July 1941) once it gets a little darker.

I sunk the convoy I found.

Just right now, when I was patrolling. I found another convoy of 17 ships. 14 enemy, and 3 neutral.

I sunk all the enemy ships and accidently sunk a neutral one. Does that take off of my renown?

The convoy had no escorts at all and the ships only had a few deck guns so I got through with no damage till I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and got rammed by a merchant and my hull went down to 11%.

I sunk everything and started patrolling again and I went to my crew screen and set the mode for normal cruise mode and the game crashed.

I am now pissed off. I will have to see if I can even find the convoy again and re do my killing.

I'm about to start my 11th patrol and have only come upon 1 convoy! Sank a tanker and troopship. I tend to only find single ships. I get very few radio reports about convoys(only one). I tend to submerge during the day and listen for contacts but still only find single ships. About to patrol down around Gibraltar again and hopefully I'll find a convoy down there this time.

Found my first unescorted convoy tonight. It's early '42 and I had to submerge first to take out some of the armed pest. 1 Troop Transport, 8 C2s(mostly armed), 2 T3s, 1 small tanker, and 4 small merchants. The T3s went down really fast under my 105 but the unarmed C2s took several shots. My crew is reloading my outboard torpedos so I can finish off the last 3 SM and ST. This will take for ever.

Ah, I replayed the patrol mission and found the convoy again. This time, it wasn't unescorted. It had a destroyer with it.

I wanted to lure the destroyer towards me so I went flank speed until he found me and I put a torpedo under his ship and blew it up. I then had fun with the merchants, using my deck gun and torpedos until all of the torpedoes were gone and I had sunk all the ships. I left the neutral targets alone this time.

I found another ship on the way back and I only had about 30 rounds of HE in my deck gun so I sunk the cargo ship with that.

I then had the unfortunate experience of meeting a destroyer on my way back to base. I saw him at medium range since there was light fog and it was day. I crash dived to 70 feet and slowly snuck away as he dropped depth charges and called in the help of another destroyer. They only searched the place I had last been around and I evaded their sonar pings and listening devices. I used the tactics I read on these boards and got away with no damage. First time successfully evading a destroyer.

First time trying to evade one ended in tragedy as it was shallow water and I crashed into the ocean floor as I tried to go deeper and he dropped charges on me.
