what is anisotropic filtering, do I want it on, and at what level(2x, 4x, 8x)?
what is antialiasing, do I want it on, and at what level(2x, quincunx, 4x, 4xS, 6xS, 8xS?
Do I want texture sharpening on?
what is PCI texture memory size, and how much system memory should be allocated for textures in PCI mode?
Which setting is better, OpenGL or Direct3D?

Anistropic filtering somehow makes the textures cleaner than with trilinear or bilinear, and I think makes texture LOD transitions look better. Try it and see if you notice a difference. If you use perfect mode, AF makes the water bump map and texture much cleaner.

Antialising smooths the image to prevent jagged edges on polygons, and smooths textures at oblique angles. 2x is essentially mush, quiqunx gives me a headache for some reason (but is fast), 4x is still kinda mushy, and 6x and 8x should be crisp. I don't know what the "S" stands for though.

Texture sharpening prevents antialiaing from making the textures look blurry.

Depends on your card. The defaults should be ok.

OpenGL generally has better framerates, but you should try both to see which is faster on your machine. OpenGL generally has less clipping (where distant obects will flicker or cover each other up). OpenGL is required for perfect mode.

If you have a middle of the road machine like me, you'd probably want all of these extra features disabled. AA is the big framerate killer, anistropic filtering is a close second. Using S3TC compression will improve your performance drastically, at the cost of texture quality.

What kind of machine do you have?
