From my previous Patrol ( Mission III ).

We had just begun our return home, out of eels, out of D.G. ammo €" lousy weather with heavy fog, heavy rain and winds blowing at an inconvenient 10 mps.
Gunther picked up a contact on sonar, it was close, alone and moving slow.
I looked at the map & guessed it must be a C2 or C3.
I was right.
We set up a perfect interception and at a depth of 25 meters we took up a course running parallel of her stbd. side.
When I guessed we€d come abreast €" not wishing to give us up just yet by raising a scope, I gave the order to surface€¦

Since the incident, I€ve had time to reflect on what must€ve seized the Captain and crew of that lonely C2. Struck fast in a driving rain storm by a Gray ghost €¦

Breaking surface, I ran Aust out to man the 20mm & sent Carlewitz back up to the bridge. I went up too.
I called out heading correction which was passed down the hole and the bow swung deliberately to port by a few degrees. We matched the lumbering giant€s speed and then a little, slowly hedging towards her bow.
Aust was shouting something through the wind and rain and looked pale as a ghost himself.
We were all tired. I jumped down to the 20 myself and shoved Aust onto the bridge with Carlewitz.
Swinging the gun €˜round to port, I commenced firing. Before long, my design was nearly completed €" I€d destroyed all the heavy cargo mounted on the heavy pallets fore and aft. I then turned the gun on the C2€s bridge and emptied two full clips into the walls and windows. A little €˜Atlantic coffee€ Wolf-style€¦ I want these Brit€ captains remember; I want them to think before they leave their home ports what is waiting for them out here€¦

War€s hell ain€t it?
It€s just mean €¦

The barrel of the 20 was still smoking when I nodded to Carlewitz and the standby order was sent down the hatch.
The bow of U-53 now swung gently to stbd. the boat moved off to the threshold of visibility in the dense fog and dove to 40 meters.
€œSluuussshhh€¦€ The Gray-ghost was gone €¦

U-49, has had similar encounters, but in my experience, i came up next to an american transport whilst we were still neutral, and put a Star round into the bridge, and an HE into the radio causing a massive fire and leaving the ship stranded in the middle of the atlantic with no Helm and no Radio. Haben Sie des Spaß-Amerikanerhundes!

Question how are you useing your flak gun in that weather? I am asuming a mod of some kind, I woudl love to know I am sick of only being able to use my guns in perfect weather. Nice job though piss those limies off real good, and give their captains a reason to cower in their taverns.

I was wondering the same thing! I could do it now, since I installed RUB mod, which raises the threshold of the AA&DG useage.

Hi guys €"

Modifying the Conditions under which the D.G. can be used is very simple & easy to do: - if you want to modify it €¦

Go to your SH III Installation folder & navigate the directory-tree to the (by default) location / folder:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Submarine\NSS_U boat7b

I€m here using the Type VII B as an example, but it is the same for each Sub Type and variant.

Inside (each) the Sub(marine)€s folder, you€ll see a file named NSS_Uboat7b.cfg.
Open this file with Notepad.

Scroll down to the section named: [Properties] , and look at the last line of that (sub)-section: it should read something like:

StormConditions=6,0;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

Change the values to those desired for max wind-speed at which you can use the Deck Gun.
For example:

StormConditions=15,1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1]

Note that you€ll need change both of the values here shown in €˜red.€
This latter example line would then make the D.G. usable in any weather. The €˜15€ being wind-speed, the €˜1€ is for rain (€˜yes€).

Make any changes you wish, then €˜Save€ and close the file.
Don€t Forget to Back-up your Original *.cfg file before making any changes €" just in case€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

NOTE: Bear in mind too, that as per my recent €˜discovery€ €" modifying the DG €œStormConditions=€ parameters, will (I believe universally so) cause loss of your Watch Crew€s Raincoats, etc in foul weather @ and above whatever value you set here.

i.e. If you set * StormConditions=12,1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] €" your crew€s rain-gear will vanish in winds and rain at and above 12 mps.

Did a lot of head-scratching over why those went missing before my husband figured it out for me€¦ http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Best, BOL & happy hunting!

I've been wondering why my guys keep losing their sou'westers and wellies. I've tinkered with clothing using different mods so many times that my guys wear indoor clothing all the time, whether it is raining, snowing or a nice sunny day.

In fact, I've tinkered so many times I'm thinking of blowing out my whole installation and starting afresh.

I really enjoy experimenting with mods. It would be nice if we knew which mods were incompatible with certain other mods. Some readme files indicate so, but many do not. As RUb and SH3 Commander are my core mods, I find that certain other mods just will not work with them.

Is there a mod out there which will give me back my rain gear?

P.S. Nice work with the flak gun, Chrystine. I used to enjoy raking over the deck cargo, to the point where I had little ammo left for the planes. Now I don't bother unless I know I can sink a ship with the flak gun, which I have done many times with the 20mm gun. I regularly use it to sink anything from tugboats and smaller. Now I've got a 37mm flak on my new IXB. I wonder what is the largest ship that can be sunk by 37mm flak gun only?

Hi Kaleun,

Thanks!
That one sure had me pulling hair for a good-while, €˜til Bj¶rn figured it out.
As far as any Mod that €˜corrects€ that I haven€t a clue€¦
It€d be a nice one to have. I feel so guilty sending the boys up there in nasty weather without their rain gear, I make a point to go out and stand the bridge with them the entire time myself.
I€ve dropped SC= back down a couple notches too €" owing to this unfortunate linkage.

I sure agree about the not-knowing Mod-compatibility, etc.
I€ve D/L€ed I don€t know many Mods that just sit here unused after having read the €˜ReadMe€ €" simply because they Modify over-lapping (already) Modified files.

€œI really enjoy experimenting with mods.€

Must be a €˜guy thing.€ I can€t stand it €" it drives me positively-loopy. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks, I appreciate that from a seasoned Kaleun.

The shots aren€t all that exciting, I know €" but a little different.
To deliberately attack a heavy cargo knowing in advance you€ll not sink it €" nor even try, and then as suddenly as you appear, vanish€¦

I sure agree too, and the practice for me will be short-lived.
It€s still just early Feb. €40 here now tho€ €" and I€ve just seen my first Hurricane yesterday morning.
They€re like house-flies€¦ After dealing with Sunderlands and the Libs. €" I hardly pay those little speed-freaks any attention. If they get too close €" I€ll swat at them and dive.

The first a/c encountered for this Career yesterday morning€¦
Ouch €" bet that smarts!

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ..I can think of one way to find out€¦

By the time able to get three M42 Zwilling€s for the VIIC (at-least: I don€t know about the IX) €" it€d be very risky to try it I€d think.
Let me know if you find out?!

Best,

This is nice. I took out a few costal merchants I otherwise I would not of gone after, not wanting to waste torpedos on those little guys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Brilliant, thanks Chrystine, tried to fight it out with a patrol craft in bad weather, no torpedoes left, he was blasting hell out of me and all I could do apart from shout abuse at him was to try ramming him but they had some sort of top secret high speed reversing mechanism installed(????????)so it was nigh-on impossible, if only I'd had my flak gun to hand. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
Cheers

Hi Dave,

My pleasure€¦

They are pesky lil€ buggars, aren€t they? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
&nd it is a very appreciable thing to be able to €˜un-limber€ the guns in weather over 6 mps. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I€ve finally settled on the happy near-medium of 13 mps.
If wind/weather is at or below 12 mps I can use them €" 13-15, no go.

Makes a world of difference€¦

Best, & happy hunting!
