View Full Version : Historic Alternative? The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Powered Spitfire Mk.I

A few days ago I posted a thread (Merlin. Best Aero Engine of the War? A Decisive Force?) In which I asked the question: What would have been an alternative engine for the Allies, if the Roll-Royce Merlin had not been available.
SkyChimp suggested the Pratt & Whitney R-2800.Just for fun I wondered what the beast would look like in the Spitfire?

So.May I present to you all a glimpse into that alternative reality.?

It's like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa!

And I've just returned from my annual rampage around the Channel Islands - drew a complete blank looking for natives that remember being buzzed by Whirlies - mind you, they probably don't get in the establishments I frequented that much /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

How's your collating from Yeovil going?

It's an abomination!

I need a old preist and a young preist! Time for an exorcism.

All I can say is I am glad it was never tried...

I was going to say a "guppy", but pregnant whale's pretty accurate /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Now, can you make some of those god-awful looking American Pacific Theater radial engined fighters with an inline engine?

That's a bit harsh, SkyChimp...Undoubtedly she's had to gain a little weight...But so would you if you had to swallow that Yank lump.

I think the fuller figure is quite becoming. Lol.

It's like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa! Lol And an extra chin.

And I've just returned from my annual rampage around the Channel Islands. Did you get a tan? - Or did you spend your time visiting historic hostelries?

How's your collating from Yeovil going? Slowly...Very slowly.

OK, I spelt your name wrong Secudus (major)./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

The 109 had a radial engine attached to its airframe. BF109 V21 W.Nr. 1770, D-IFKQ with a BMW139. It flew from Aug. 18, 1939 to at least Sept. 1940.

I know I'll get some flak for this but IMO radial engine planes are generally not as attractive as inline watercooled engines.

Radial planes all look stubby. The only planes they can pull off some beauty with a radial is the P-47 and the FW-190...*maybe* the Corsair...

Now take a Mustang or Spitfire or P-39...nice, graceful, SLEEK lines. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The twin versions fuselage looks like one of those really ugly jet seaplane things that Saro built just after the war. As for the radial...ugh, that plane must have flown straight through the Ugly Cloud!!!!
