...that puts a little cross on the side of my plane for every plane I shoot down in the CAMPAIGN missions?

No. "mods" don't really exist in this sim. There are several programs that could loosely be though of as 'mods' but they are managers, nothing of the sort you describe exists

However, if you have a custom skin, it's quite easy to open that skin in Paint, and apply the kill mark yourself. Very easy to do

There is a utility around that does that...check Bearcat99's "Sturmovik Essentials" thread or Airwarfare.com's Files page.

Well, yes and no http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Paint Victories will, unless it has been updated since I used it, allow you to put pre-selected victory tabs anywhere you want on a skin

But-
you do it manually, Pain tVictories doesn't work with the campaign mode of the sim, to automatically put kill marks on the aircraft. You exit the sim, open PV, select the skin file, select the kill mark, select the number of kills and the pattern to be applied, and the location on the skin you want to put them, and it does it

Paint Victories is essentially MS Paint (hence it's name, I expect) that uses the existing Paint program with a slick little routine. It's a nice program, but personally, I find it much simpler to open the skin in good old Paint http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Got two problems now.

1. I downloaded the paint untility from AirWarfare but I can't seem to extract and install it.

2. I then tried to open the skins in the Il2 folder itself and paint them on but did'nt know what aircraft was mine, coz they change from mission to mission, and where the side of the cockpit actually is on the skin? :s

Well, on the extract, i can't help

On the skins painting thing-

Firstly, you need a custom skin- you can't alter the default skins in any way

So you get a custom skin. Open it in paint. Do what you want with it, and "save as" a new name

Then, under 'aircraft customisation', before every mission, you always have the ability to change skins. You select your custom skin (the one you've altered) then. The game's not going to do it for you, unless it happens to be the last custom skin you've used on that aircraft. You tell the sim what skin you want

As for where a cockpit or any other part of a plane is, the skin templates do not all follow the same formula. If you need to locate a part of the plane that you can't find on your own, I suggest asking in the Paint Schemes forum

Here's an example: P-51D

This is just a small bit of the skin. But notice how the plane's fuselage is vertical. Some are horizontal. Some have parts that are actually backwards, I suspect they are flopped horizontally to make both siders identical. But anyway, this is a skin I customised in paint

I swiped a decal from the FB Regiments folder, and aadded text with the paint text feature

This way of doing it is a little tedious, but it wasn't a big area and I've done it before- I'm pretty good at copying and pasting little bits of skins here and there to blend stuff in

Just make sure you "save as" another name. Don't change the color resolution either- I beleive it's 256 color bitmap, and you have strict rules about file size- 1MB tops

This doesn't show kill marks, but it's the same idea
