Could someone please post the setting I change in the config file to speed up the game alot more?

It lags a bit on my outdated computer. Thank you.

Dave- first tip is to turn down your graphic settings, especially thing like water effects etc.
Check out threads like this one (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/23110283/m/9121094645).
I also recommend using programs like Il2Stab to reset your config settings more easily.

My computer specs are AMD 2400+, 512mb of ram and fx5200 graphics card.

I have downloaded IL2Stable, just installing now.

Please go run a "dxdiag" (Start/Run/dxdiag) and post the results of the tests in the community help forum, together with the content of your "conf.ini", file and "il2setup.ini". You can find those in your IL-2 1946 folder.

This way the very experienced gents that freqvent Comunity help forum can see exactly what you can do to get the most out of your game.

Another 512MB of ram would be great but first post there and see what they advise you.

To run "FB-PF", 1 Gib of ram is alomst required. Will make a HUUUUUGE difference immediately. I'm running 1 gig, and since 46 finding it taxed, so possibly 1.5-2Gig.
Your graphics card is a little lacking, yet all worked fine for me on my old GEForce 4200 agp till it blew out, so though stressed may work ok. Lastly, not sure if your sound is onboard or a seperate card, yet if onboard I'd consider even a cheap card like an Audigy 1.

No expert on all this, yet can tell you ram alone would be hindering you.....Also consider shutting down background programs before play. That will help dramatically, and bumping your page file up some.

Without changing/upgrading hardware here's some things you can try and change regarding your current setup:

In conf.ini, under the [Render_OpenGL] section:

Change Effects=1 to =0

Change 3DGunners=1 to =0

Set some graphics options (in game, via hardware setup) to a lower level.
Will gain you performance, but you will loose some of the game's good looks.

Run IL2Setup.exe, Sound options, lower 'Playback channels' from 16 to 8, you may get a decrease in sound quality, but an increase on performance.

There probably are later drivers for the VIA chipset you are using, wether they will improve performance, I do not know. (Should include soundcard drivers too...)

Your graphics card drivers are outdated too, check wether nvidia.com has later drivers available (once again, no guarantee this will improve performance, but... there's a chance it will)

These are all small steps, tuning up performance a bit.

To take bigger steps, you would need more memory, more CPU power, more Video card power...

Your CPU is fine.

What you need to do is update that awful graphics card and put 512mb more ram in.


I assume you dont want to spend much so here goes :-

Get on EBay and pick up either a Nvidia 6800 card or a 7600 card, or a ATI X800 series card.

You should be able to get one for around 40

ALso get on ebay and get yourself 512mb of PC3200 Ram for around 30.

These 2 components will make a MASSIVE difference to your gameplay in all games, not just IL2, and fitting them is alsmot as easy as putting a game into a Sega Megadrive.

Any questions ask here.

Until you get these components, definitely change the Video setting in IL2 setup to Pixel SHader 1.X limited.

DONT run with the Nvidia 5xxx setting. Even my 5900 ultra used to struggle onthis setting. Nvidia 5xxx series have terrible Pixel shader 2.0 support and trying to run it in this mode will slow things right down to a crawl

If you get those 2 upgrades I suggested, your system will be as good as mine (XP2500+/X800 Pro/1Gb RAM) and I can play all todays games at good settings. You will have a pretty good system which will do you for another year. Il2 will fly along at excellent settings 1024x768.

I agree with all he says. You might stick with a lower resolution for now and no higher that 2XAniso and 2XAA. Cut down on graphic settings like realistic clouds for more boost and low water. this will help you a lot. For sure get a better graphics card and more ram.

HI Dave.

You know IL2setup.exe? The application in your Il2 folder which you use to change settings?

Run it and choose the video settings tab.

Now you have certain options, change the drop down menu settings to 'Limit Pixel Shader 1.X'

I may not have it exactly right, but there is only one such settings in the options for shader 1.X.

Also put a tick in the 'S3 Texture compression' (S3TC) box.


Do you understand?

This should give you a definite performance boost.

Changing the following in your conf.ini may help a tad:

I think the last item is what Xiolablu3 is talking about, and TexCompress=2 is the same as turning on S3TC in il2setup.

You should be able to run 1024x768 resolution, 16-bit color, and no AA or AF whatsoever, and get something playable. I have friends who run the sim on integrated graphics like that, and it's playable.

After the computer reformat and a fresh install I tested the game with default settings.. sticky. I applied the settings you all suggested and it runs just as good as the original IL-2, doesnt look as good but now I can zoom down on a plane and not stick when he gets to about 300 meters away http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Oh one more thing, Anyone got any stick settings for 4.08m? I lost mine with the reinstall.

I use setitngs very simimlar to Jaws, low curve leading to high curve,

They are not the default settings, but I think they give the smoothest ride.

Jaws joystick settings are the stock settings, I have left mine at stock and they seem to work just fine. Had to remove the deadzone my stick had and apply a bit stronger force to center. It runs like a dream.

Thank you everyone who helped me tweak my game, it is playable (Even with alot of planes flying in the same area!)

I have not yet tried online as im hooked on my campaign but I will shoot ya'll down soon :P

Hi Dave

As far as Nvidia graphics drivers go, you are probably better off sticking to the older versions rather than trying one of the new ones.

Try this one:

Also, once you have done it a couple of times, the installation is a breeze. Just make sure you uninstall the old driver using the control panel, reboot, clean the registry with a proprietry programme, turn off antivirus and install following the instructions. This may be useful:

Bear in mind it is written for modern cards, but the installation procedure is the same.

I installed some older drivers after I reformated. A friend of mine who is a bit more computer savy than me told me to get some older drivers. I downloaded the 77.77 drivers. They seem to work well.

That's great...my system limits me to a 6600gt (which is absolutely fine by me) series card and so I stick to nothing newer than 84.21. It's not that I haven't tried newer ones, it's more a case of compatability issues.
