Im almost done with the external. About 99% finished. Just need the pilots seat and the pitot. Fast hay? About 4 days of work and about 30 hours total. Also, some great news!!! Jeronimo (the guy who STARTED the P-38 cockpit) is going to finish the cockpit. He is doing some AMAZING work, and I could NOT do it justice to finish it. He has some free time. Lucky me! I hate doing the cockpits.

Here are your screen shots!!!

Also, a proposed armorment.

The P-38 had a lot of modifications to the nose guns. But they stuck with the 4x .50 cal and 1x 20MM. How about this modification for fun?

http://gibbageart.havagame.com/images/P38_12x50.jpg

OK. Seriously I want to have the gun pods as options. They were used many times in operational units. I have a few photo's to prove it was not just a test or a field mod! This would give the P-38 a total of 8! .50 cal's and the bonus 20MM!!!! With that option, it would almost be the most powerfull aircraft in the game. 2nd to only a FW-190 with gunpods, or a BF-109 with gunpods. If the Luftwaffa can get gunpods, well so can we!!!

I always wonder about all the planes that are in work. Are they going to be offered with the add-on that has been promised? Or will they be separate downloads offered through third party sites? Gibbage, you do some amazing work, and I'm sure we all can't wait to fly your planes. I'm eager to get 'em.

The Me-110 would have wet dreams about being a P-38.

It was a VERY capable dogfighter. US's top two aces were P-38 pilots in the Pacific fighting Zero's.

Does the proposed armament include 2 x 500 pounders? 2 x 1,000 pounders (up to 4,000lbs load).

Are HVARs 5" rockets acceptable? Or is that only late war? If that's the case, and I hate to impose on you, but could you borrow the bazooka jerry-rigged things on the P-47 and give us this:

<img src=http://users.adelphia.net/~machineii/images/p-38rocket1.jpg>

The 12 rocket installation saw limited use and then they went to 5" HVARs.

Hate to inform you Boosher but the Fowler flaps were not "dive recovery flaps".

The "dive recovery flaps" were located on the bottom of the wing in front of the Fowlers and just behind the main spar.

PTO pilots were more than confident they could out-turn a Zero (with Combat flaps in some cases). Make no mistake, this is a turn fighter. Also, it was one of the most aerobatic of USAAF fighters, the only restricted maneuver was Split-S's due to compressibility (fixed with dive flaps).

I was told by my great uncle (who flew a P-38 in the Pacific) that they were extremely tricky to fly, and that they would avoid getting into a turning fight if at all possible.

Standard tactics were to conduct slashing runs using the superior speed of the aircraft.

Yes that confidence, that McGuire tried to outmanovreuvre an approaching Ki-43 flown by Sgt. ***uda and crashed. This turning with Zeros was related to the dive recovery flaps not to the combat flaps. Also the use of them more than 90? was strictly forbitten due the dramatic loss of energy.

We've all pretty much seen that there are exceptions to every rule. Also, it's the pilot not the plane, remember? An expert pilot in a Zero can defeat an average pilot in a Lightning. The P-38 is, however, completely capable of doing the things I mentioned above.

The P-38 had VERY good combat flaps and they enabled P-38's to turn very tightly indeed. The dive recovery flaps were automatic IIRC and their only purpose was to reduce compressibility and changing the airflow.

And I don't know where you are getting your 90 degree data from, but it's inconsistent with just about all other P-38 data.

Thanks for the complaments.

As for the He-219, I really dont know. I have very little knolege of this bird. First I heard of it was when FB came out and it was mentioned in this forum. Rather interesting bird I must say. A little on the fugly side, but it has its charm! Like the firepower! In a night fighter roll, I think the He would win simply because its more suited for it. P-38 was addopted to it, He was BUILT for it. In the day time, I dont know. I would think the P-38 would have an edge in speed and manuverability because I think its lighter. I really dont know how the He rolls, turns, but I guess its top speed would be quite high.

One thing is for sure, I would NOT take a He-219 head on http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Kirma. You keep forgettign the key part of that sorry!!! McGuire still had full drop tanks when doing the turn! McGuire got his kills turning with Zero's and Ki-43's, but he refused to drop his tanks on this one. His squad mates warned him, but he thought he could do it. Just think, you have so much confadance in an aircraft, you think you can out turn a Zero with drop tanks still on.

El, just for the records: It weren`t "the germans" in general who called the P-38 like that.

It were the german ground troops who did so, for the P-38 was feared by them in its ground-attack role.

The german pilots had no reason to be afraid to much, and they didn`t call it like that.

This is confused very often, so I feel the need to make that clear.

Besides that the P-38 of course is a very interesting fighter, and since I love the twin-engines I will try it for sure.

Great work so far Gibbage!

All P-38's had fowler type flaps that helped it a LOT to turn tighter. Late models like the one I am doing had dive brakes that will also help tighten the end of a loop. If I modeled earlier P-38's, they would be uber lawn darts without the dive flaps.

Whats this, a P-38J or L? In any case, they will be great addons for the Balaton map, in the first half of 1944 Lightings were seen quite often over Hungary.

When it comes, we can finally recreate 14th of June a few times... for sure, I will write a mission for it.

BTW, Gib, why dont you model these kind of planes instead of the UFOs?

I've read alot of different stuff about the '38 - the best I saw was an ET pilot who flew the 47, 51 and 38 - his take was that the p38 did EVERYTHING better than the mustang (except of course the long range) I have also seen an account by a German ace that this was the american fighter he respected most.

The thing is the p38 was not easy to fly - so it had a tremendous range of possibilities in terms of being good or bad. The dive flaps definitely boosted the turn - particularly the instantaneous turn if memory serves. Before these flaps the 38s had problems with lawn dartage.

If I'm not mistaken the case of the pilot augering in when he tried to turn low and slow with a ki43 was due to the fact that he forgot to lose his drop tanks.

The Chain Lightning was the XP-58. It used 2 Allison V-3420 turbo supercharged engines of 3000hp at 28,000ft.

Gibbage, this is clearly just another one of the Americans attempts to portray themselves as having played some part in the defeat of the Thousand-Year Reich....which was NEVER defeated and lives completely between my ears!

[NOTE: the part of a certain Asshat was portrayed by Cossack13. The above statement is a p1ss-poor attempt at fiction. No decent human beings were insulted during the making of this post.]

The P38 was NOT, repeat NOT a turn fighter.. The only place a P38 could "turn" with a zero is over 350MPH.. The US PTO P38 Aces got that way by using a MAJOR speed advantage (especially in the dive) and good gunnery.. The PTO Aces that died in action, got that way by forgetting rule number one.. they got slow and lost..

Assisted flaps and Aelerons are for high speed where they counter compression.. if you get slow, the A6M would turn circles around a P38

The P38 is a LARGE aircraft and wasn't as nimble as other fighters like a P51D (which wasn't exactly a "nimble" plane either).. and not even close to an F6F3 or 5.

It did however have 2 engines..a VERY big asset in the PTO where a lot of over water flying was needed.. many a pilot lost their life for lack of oil or maintenance without ever recieving an enemy shot..

XyZspineZyX

1) bump
2) the p40 could not our turn a zero so if the p38 could then the p38 turning has to be better than the p40

I would say you are correct with regards to the PTO. The P-38 certainly was not a "turn fighter" there. Without doubt, the majority of Japanese fighters were the best crop of of turn fighters seen in WWII. However, a select few pilot who could utilize flaps, dive brakes and seperate engine management could, indeed, out turn many Japanese planes. But the techniques were difficult to master and again only very experienced pilots could achieve the desired results. But when they could achieve them, the turn radius could be very small.

In the ETO, it was a different story. The P-38 was without doubt one of the better turn fighters. The ETO tactic was to engage German fighters in turn fights.

Skychimp. You wouldn't be interested in sharing some of your bibliography with me could you. I'm a huge Pacific war nut, so everything I've ever read about American aircraft relates to the CBI and Pacific theaters. But since IL-2 came out I've slowly been absorbing info about the ETO. Any good books about there about the U.S. air tactics and operations in the ETO?

- Skychimp. You wouldn't be interested in sharing
- some of your bibliography with me could you. I'm a
- huge Pacific war nut, so everything I've ever read
- about American aircraft relates to the CBI and
- Pacific theaters. But since IL-2 came out I've
- slowly been absorbing info about the ETO. Any good
- books about there about the U.S. air tactics and
- operations in the ETO?

For preferred tactics, try Osprey's:

Long Reach VIII Fighter Command at War
Long Reach
http://www.ospreypublishing.com/osp_img/titlecovers/P9077AS.JPG

This volume focuses on the little known official Army Air Force report commissioned by the Eighth Air Force's VIII Fighter Command (FC) in May 1944. The detailed document chronicled the experiences of 24 pilots who had seen extensive service in the frontline escorting B-17s and B-24s on daylight raids deep into Germany. Briefed to provide a candid report on combat flying that could be used as a teaching 'manual' for potential fighter pilots, the VIII FC veterans openly discuss their secrets to success, and survival in the deadly skies over occupied Europe. Exactly half of those pilots who contributed to The Long Reach subsequently achieved ace status.
