Perhaps I missed the "you is wrong".

Did we ever get any comment on why the 109s from the G-6 on up have windows that look like they've been smeared with oil? Especially when this doesn't seem present on any other aircraft. (Ok, I haven't flown them *all*, but certainly a lot of them)

I had to fly a 109 in Ivan's the other night and took a K-4. I couldn't see crap out of the bloody thing. The P-47 razorbacks have better visibility, even with that dammed bar in the center of the front windscreen. It's not about pit shape, it's about glass quality.

The germans were known for it. The sov's were not. Hmmm.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Yes I hate this "feature" as well especially iconless. YAKs are very hard to see out of as well with overdarkened glass.

Almost keeps me from flying these planes. ALmost.

I kinda like it... gives a "rugged" feeling.... you are not in a clean F-16-- you are in a powerhorse running on gas and oil... If they should chance anything.. smear the other canopies too.

The problem is that they don't. And actually, with the lack of proper resolution (compared to the eye IRL) it should be clear.

Either way, the LW, US, and UK canopies should be clearer than the soviet ones.

Late 109s had many ersatz components, thus I don't particularly mind the fact that 109late has dirty a canopy - except that early LaGGs (for example) have crystal clear canopies...

The same criteria should be applied for both sides - or neither!

It seems someone went to an airplane museum and looked through authentic, 60 year-old perspex and decided to model it that way, so what we have is 60 year old perspex that has yellowed with age.

Sounds about right Chadburn. It's just for the 109s though. Doesn't that seem rather "interesting"?

Aaron, is this another "coincidence"?

Try looking out of the rear gunners pos on a Stuka D-3. And when you've discovered that not only can you not see your own a/c's tail because the window cleaner hasn't called round for ages, change to externals and try and reconcile the two positions with regards to design. Somebody has nicked the view-limiting armour plate while you weren't looking.

Trying to see an enemy a/c from the D-3 is impossible, attempting to shoot it down doubly so.

Bad show.

Ladies & gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. Thankyou for choosing to fly Mandarin Airlines. Those passengers sitting on the left-hand side of the aeroplane please make yourselves comfortable. Those sitting on the right... please look to your left!

So Oleg won't comment on why the late 109s are being screwed in terms of vis?

Why?

If I use 16bit colour the glass looks really bad, but with 32 bit I don't have visibility issues in any of the aircraft. Some have more grime/reflection etc than others -but its not a big deal (for me anyway).
Using GeForce4 Ti4400 - 1024x768x32bpp, Quincunx FSAA, highest non-perfect settings.

Cheers

It's well known that VVS planes suffered "yellowing" due to poor quality materials; it's one of the reasons they loved the P-39, the view was simply far better than anything the Russians head. But as is the case with so many things in this sim, this little nuance miraculously got "lost in translation."

By the same token, the Germans were known for their outstanding engineering/workmanship. The dirty 109 windshields don't correspond to anything I've read. Maybe there are "secret files" I missed.

DDT, IIRC Oleg did give a comment to that darkened glass on late 109ers. He stated something about poor glass quality at late stage of war in Germany. But I didn't seen any prove for real life 109 poor quality canopies./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
