I am flying campaign missions now without using autopilot and am doing well in keeping up with the AI planes but I not sure of the formations for Russian and German planes.

I know I am the last one off the ground so I am at the back but it would be helpful if someone could point me in the direction of illustrations of formations.

Also, when coming up to a turn and we are at say 400 ft the leader will say turn "heading 160, height 01" and we turn and the whole formation stays at 400? I would have taken that to mean an altitude of 100ft? Could anyone answer that?

Thanks

Here is a great link to some on-line training for IL2.

In IL2, all measurements, including height are in meters.

All the best, Don

one thing i don't quite understand (i'm not understanding alot today /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ) is the formations commands - when you are leading you can order the formation to form up differently - yet when AI is in command they never order you to change formation - so i never know how the squadron is to form up without putting autopilot on for a bit- so it places me where i should be. also if your going attack a ground target the squadron forms into "line astern" at a certain point without any audible command from anyone - even if your in command and you don't want them to " line astern".

also i'm sure half the time the heading commands (vector 130 height 100 or whatever) don't seem to correspond to the waypoints on the map
- maybe this is due to my other pet peeve with heading commands - which is this:

i bloody wish there would be something added to radio calls to distinguish between different flights - am i the only one who gets confused when theres another flight/squadron flying that is nothing to do with your squadron or it's mission? - when you keep getting calls such as headings , and "enemy fighters 6 o clock", "target one minute ahead", or "this is two i'm going down" - and they are nothing to do with you it gets SO confusing especially if your flying full real.

Surely in real life thay had codes to correspond to the different flights so you would know who was talking and whether it was relevant to you or not !!! - i'm sure this could easily be altered by the addition of a codeword at the beginning of the transmission so you would know who was talking - it would make so much difference - anyone else agree? - or am i missing something that would help me?

Yes and no. Confusion is a big part of radio communication in a fight. When you are really hit, you just SCREAM like Cleo. I never figured out if the radio channel thing works. The AI is so freaking weird, I never bother with radio--an Air Force of One. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Although the range of the old radios is another thing, especially VVS. You can hear the whining of somebody from across the Finland map along with the gunfire it would seem (I turn sound off whats the point?) and thus to keep screen clear I turn off the screen chatter and thus I have no communication with the AI....what's the point anyway they are such fnebbing noobs. If they took the team of sound effects and put them into programming AI communication, that would make me Happy.

I keep wanting to turn off the dialog that takes up the top half of my screen, but as I do not understand Russian or German I would not know what hey are saying......hmmm.

And I get confused by the different calls from other flights as well, i'm looking around for bandits at six o'clock when there are none, lol.

I'm glad you can keep up. I'm flying in a 109 and my wing man leaves me in the dust. Even though I fly at full throttle untill I get the engine overheat. Only unless they run into something on the way can I catch up. There seems to be no continuity in the german formations. I can keep up much better in a Fockwulfe. But I like the BF/Me 109 better.

Well I am flying the IL2 and He-111, haven't tried keeping up with the 109/190's etc.

One thing I read somewhere though, and I use it, is to wait a couple of seconds after the plane in front starts moving and then go full throttle 110% and I can keep up. I am not fully in the formation but I am also not getting yelled at!

The German voices in Il2 are so damn funny, so don' t woory, even we can' t understand them.

Bump /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Most of the time I start my plane immediately and get to altitude and on course and have the others catch up.

I also enjoy attacking the enemy alone while my guys are catching up. Although many of those times I'm high tailing it back hoping I can catch the security of their approaching numbers before being knocked out.
