View Full Version : Rear gunnery+unused plains+Beaufighter issue

So, I was trying out some rear gunnery today in an SBD-5, and basically every time I flew could take down around two planes, and then I got shot in the face...any tips/tricks for this? It's hard to get those guys that hang right behind your tail, because you can't really see them, or shoot them because of the tail assembly. Annoying.

On another note, what's up with all the extra planes in IL2? There are all these sweet Italian planes I wanted to try out, I wanted to play a mission or two maybe with the biplanes, but I couldn't find any...lame. Did I just miss them somehow, or are there a bunch of random planes thrown in?

And also, on my Beaufighter, there's no dorsal gunner...there's the glass thing, and a person, but no machine gun...how do I fix this?
And why can't I jump into the rear position?

Is the Beau supposed to have a rear machine gun? Or is it just an observer spot or something?

Some versions of the Beaufighter did not have a rear gunner. The version modelled in this game is one of those.

Alright then, thanks guys.

And am I really the only one who ever flies as a rear gunner? Nobody has any tips?

Oh yeah, the SBD rocks! Love sitting in back...lots of fun online.

Basically, you want to remember to aim between your tail and the attacker to account for your forward speed (unless the plane is moving at the same speed you are).

But you're not going to be able to get all the planes if you're being attacked by multiple bogies. The rear guns just aren't powerful enough.

Zeros go down pretty quick but some of the late war Japanese fighters are a little better armored. Aim for the wing roots. That seems to work for me.

The back seat in the Beau is the navigator. A Beau's main defense is speed, keep that in mind http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Shame we can't have the gunner radio calls added to the Beaufighter.

Yeah, one thing that would be nice to add to this game would be to have actual contact between the all the guys manning the aircraft...I know I'd appreciate somebody telling me when there's a pack of fighters behind me that I can't see fromt he cockpit.
