View Full Version : Difficult Choice: GWX 1.03 or 2.0?

I've found myself confronted by this for a while, and for the life of me, I'm stumped.

I've had a career going onto 1943 (from 1939) in GWX 1.03. I've been enjoying it, and GWX 1.03 still throws me a curve ball every so often (ran into a taskforce with an Illustrious Carrier, two patrols in a row!).

But I've seen all the new stuff and visuals in GWX 2.0 Naturally, I'm very impressed, and very curious. The graphical revisions and aircraft designs in particularly strike me.

The thing that's kept me from upgrading to GWX 2.0 is the difficulty level implied...the fact is, I'm no SH3 hotshot, and I'm having plenty of challenge with GWX 1.03 (at 85% realism). From what I've heard, GWX 2.0 is hard right off the bat, particularly in that destroyers are totally ruthless when it comes to ASW.

If there were some way to get around this, I would probably more readily make the jump to GWX 2.0, but....right now I'm more inclined to finish my GWX 1.03 career (two more years, after all).

Any wisdom from veterans of GWX here?

Mark, I for 1 am a huge advocate of GWX2.0 and did enjoy 1.03 but would suggest only for more different ships to torpedo and the eye candy. If you are using the SH4 to SH3 explosions effects in 1.03 or would upgrade to GWX 2.0 with that mod it would be worth your while. Either way this is a GREAT game no matter which version of GWX you are playing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I'd go with GWX2. I got wasted on my first patrol, but learned from it. Since adopting more conservative tactics with respect to the escorts, I am once again getting good tonnage results.

As BdU is so fond of saying:

"Be more aggressive!"

Nothing to stop you from haveing Duel installs?

That way you can continue your 1.03 career
AND start a 2.0 career.

An excellent option for your problem, that way you can have the best of both worlds!

So is this a good mod for a total noob? well I have played a little bit..you know what, scratch that..consider me a total noob.

Nothing to stop you from starting with 20%
Then work up from there as you get better.

Start with Stock SH3 for a while.
Once you can control your Sub and feel
Install a mod.
It's your game. Your time.
Don't let anyone tell you how you should play.
I have never went above 40% realism myself.
But I have a blast!!!!

I would even go for GWX 2 without any previous gameplay in stock mode, as Privateer mentioned you can always play with minimum realism until you grow more confident and as time goes on you can always increase the stakes.

I remember playing for the first time with zero realism, and I'm not scared in revealing that either http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I found the game a non stop series of challenges and the realism is the first place for that.

Hmmm.......two installations. I wonder why I hadn't though of that, heh.

It might be worthwhile, if only to get a feel for GWX 2.0. Maybe try out a new Type VII career, rather than my usual Type IX.

I am using SH4 graphics for SH3 (and I'm pretty certain they're working).

Don't use Racerboys SH4 for SH3 mod in GWX 2.0
It will work but!!!
You will miss some really killer stuff.
Once he upgrades his files,
it will be fine.
All add on mods take time to adjust.
Just as GWX 2.0 took 9 and a half months
to release,
so may mods created for GWX 2.0
take several months.
We did alot of changes, ALOT!!!
Nearly every file was adjusted in someway
to improve load times and lessen impact on systems.

Well, it basically looks like some divine force has made the decision on my behalf.

Yesterday, I realized my hard drive had bad sectors and had to toss it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I'm looking for GWX 1.03, but it doesn't seem to hosted anywhere anymore. Anybody know somewhere where I can download it, or GWX 1.02 and patch it to 1.03? I'd very much appreciate it.

Have you tried Subsim?

Only the main page, as I don't have an account on the forums. No luck there, they are only hosting GWX 2.0.
