A little know and rarely reported project that the Russians were involved in during WW2 was to produce an aircraft with a transparent airframe. The project used captured axis aircraft so as not to tie up aircraft needed in combat areas. The first photo below show the wreckage of an aircraft used to test the structural integrity of the transparent panels. One can easily see the star painted over the transparent wing panel.

In the next photo is a plane equipped with a complete transparent wing assembly. Note that the pilot of the plane became so disoriented and concerned about not being able to see his wing that he bailed out of a perfectly good aircraft. What eventually became of the project can only be guessed at as the results were shrouded in history and the secrecy of the cold war era.

Note: the above screen captures were not altered in any way except to reduce their file size.

I posted this Macchi-202 graphics bug numerous times in ORR but apparently it was ignored. Maybe you should post it over there or better yet send those pics to Oleg.

That's some funny stuff :>

C'mon, pan inside the Pe-8 cockpit from an external so we can see what russians really wear under their trousers.

I want that plane,man!Yes,I DO!!!!!!
BTW,there was an attempt in Soviet airforce in 1930s to create a plane remotely resembling this one/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I read it in some russian book when i was still a kid. They used mirrored surfaces all over it,and it did literally disappear in the sky! However, the mirror went dim and crackled then, the war started,blah- blah-blah-the project was forgotten.

I remember ripping the wings off of the MC.202 in my P-40 and saying: "I must have really cleaned that thing out!" lol

I have thin triangular transparent panels installed in the wings of my FW next to the wing roots. Very handy when I want to check out what's going on directly below me, but they work only (very) intermittently.

Damn unreliable LW secret weapons. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Also, the panels don't do me much next to the wing roots. I need to speak with the ground crew about getting a set for the fuselage in front of the canopy where they'd be of use.
