View Full Version : 3 better than 9 ?

In my narrow frame of mind, a late Yak9 had to be better than a Yak1, 3 or 7... like a Mercedes 500 is better than a Mercedes 300 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I even imagined that the Yak9U would be my secret deadly weapon of the last part of the Leningrad campaign... the ultimate 262 killer. Wrong ! It's not half as good as the Yak3, and I even suspect it to be inferior to the Yak1B which I used from 1942 to 1943.

Am I wrong or is russian math different than mine ?

Sequels are rarely better than the original /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Im not much good on Yaks, but some of the 9s are long range versions. Might that explain it?

Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear, give an ear!
Ye Jacobites by name, lend an ear,
Ye Jacobites by name,
Your fautes I will proclaim,
Your doctrines I maun blame, you shall hear!
2. What is Right, and what is wrang, by the law, by the law?
What is Right, and what is Wrang, by the law?
What is Right, and what is Wrang?
A short sword and a lang,
A weak arm and a strang, for to draw!
3. What makes heroic strife, famed afar, famed afar?
What makes heroic strife famed afar?
What makes heroic strife ?
To whet th' assassin's knife,
Or hunt a Parent's life, wi' bluidy war?
4. Then let your schemes alone, in the State, in the State!
Then let your schemes alone, in the State!
Then let your schemes alone,
Adore the rising sun,
And leave a man undone, to his fate!
Burns

Yak 3 is a later model than the Yak 9U, the Yak 3 was a failed fighter design meant to come after the Yak 1, and the designation Yak 3 was re-used in 1945. this caused me some confusion too.

I'm pretty sure that i am right, but i don't have a graph or some obscure book to prove it.

I haven't done much studying of the Yak3 and Yak9 in FB (because waiting for a patch before I take this sim seriously) but in IL2 the Yak9U was a better machine than the Yak3. Only the true aces know about this though. Alot of newbs think just because a plane can turn better it must be superior. Sure the Yak3 turns better but it is also significantly slower. Speed is more important than turning ability. In the case of IL2, the slow speed of the Yak3 was it's fatal flaw. Slower than the top German planes, a Yak3 is a plane that does not control it's own destiny. A Yak9, on the other hand, has sufficient speed to get away or catch up.

Maybe that's why I'm not aware of it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'll explain real quick. Yak-3 and Yak-9 development were to start at the same time with Yak-9 being a "heavy" version derived from the Yak-7B while Yak-3 was to be "light" version derived from the Yak-1. Due to urgent need it was decided to concentrate on improving the Yak-1 sooner and this resulted in the Yak-1B. Yak-9 development continued as it would be a greater improvement over the Yak-7B. Think of them as two different types with the Yak-7 eventually leading to Yak-9 series and Yak-1's eventually leading to Yak-3. They were supposed to be light and heavy version but the similarities outweigh the differences.

actually in this particular case RBJ is correct

The 9U is the better plane but the Yak 3 is a much more forgiving mount if you are a yank and bank style flyer

The Yak 3http://www.ecodragon.com/ecoart/yak.jpg

is a superb dogfighter & just a joy to fly, like the Zero or Spitfire. It's fast at 403-407 mph depending on the source. You can't dive with bad guys as your not built as tough. Also stay away from ground fire, & remember yur lightly armed. So in the Yak 3 you want to "Float like a butterfly, Sting like a bee."

The Yak 9 http://www.alanarnette.com/images/chooyu/base%20camp/yak.jpg

Was also a great fighter bomber & used for anti-shipping attacks. It could withstand more damage than the 3 & as stated by Kyrule was developed from the Yak 7 which was developed as a trainer.
The Yak 9 could handle the old "Rope a dope" move better than the 3 becuse of it's ability to take punishment. Several reports have 9s returning to base with holes through the wings main spar!

This message has been brought to you by the yak Whiners of the world Party.

I am sorry, but RBJ is wrong, the Yak 3 was a far superior plane. But because he is a complete dunderhead, and wouldn't know a fact if it hit him in the puss, I won't even go into it here.
