Yep, first in. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Tnx Cartrix for the update.

Too bad the B-17 only comes as AI. But didn't really expected it to be flyable.

i reckon its a v1/v2 complex or some kind of big bunker

maybe even costal defences (like the ones on the channel /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

I`m amazed to see a B-17. I have seen many aircraft in many sims, but Olegg will do every WWII plane true justice. Can`t wait to see it in formation action!
Also sounds like they`re preparing a D-Day invasion/defence map- possibly for multiplay.

Going to be quite some work to model part of the Atlantikwall spanning this area.

http://www.bunkersite.com/
(click "locations" and choose Normandie.)

Hope they donÔ┬┤t forget to put in some radar sites (W├╝rzburg Riese), and V1/V2 sites also.
http://www.v2rocket.com/start/deployment/wizernes.html
So we have some varied fixed military installations for targeting.

Btw, if Luthier should need it:
1/200 scale drawings of German Regelbauten Heer/Marine/Luftwaffe (Bunker) can be ordered here:
http://deutschesatlantikwallarchiv.de/prod02.htm

"Sonderband 10 - Die Regelbauten des Heeres im Atlantikwall"

============================
When it comes to testing new aircraft or determining maximum performance, pilots like to talk about "pushing the envelope." They're talking about a two dimensional model: the bottom is zero altitude, the ground; the left is zero speed; the top is max altitude; and the right, maximum velocity, of course. So, the pilots are pushing that upper-right-hand corner of the envelope. What everybody tries not to dwell on is that that's where the postage gets canceled, too.

This is awesome news..... while it looks like a 1944 map development.....it also means that earlier (Battle of France, BoB) would be no problem as the map is already there (and MANY of the aircraft).....this opens up a whole new sim world ...........awesome.
Thinking more.... maybe not BoB but certainly Battle of France (based on the absence of English ground features), but maybe they are holding that back.... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Be aware that, by the time of Operation Overlord, the Allies had established air superiority. I believe Pips Priller and his wingman were to only two Luftwaffe aircraft on record to appear in the skies over Normandy. Thus, not much dogfight action, but lots of mud moving...which ain't all bad!

Thanks for the update great stuff. The Mustang with Malcolm hood is just too cool. Can't wait to escort the Big friends then drop down low and strafe a few bunkers/gun emplacements. Awesome.

One question I would like to know is will there be a campaign made for the new map, or a few, or none?

I remember a long time ago someone posted a pic with a bunch of ships and barrage baloons along the coast and Oleg said it looked like Normamndy invasion or that simulating it would be possible. Sweet.

Also, if you ever get the time I would love to know the status of the Spits and Tempest on UBI's/Maddox's end. All we need now is a Typhoon to throw some rockets on top of the Reich!

And Blackwulf, that part about shooting down Tempests wasn't funny. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Oh well at least get Fiat G.50 and Fiat CR.42.....
Only one good thing can come from this... more money and publicity for Oleg because every schmuck west of the Atlantic will buy it so more money and then MAYBE a med sim.
Sigh.

Quoted by Bobsqueek : I think itll be good doing all those rhubarb patrols in 1942 etc, etc and dieppe, oh and normandy

And which particular allied fighter in 1942 are you proposing to do your Rhubarbs in? The Mustang had only just started to arrive in Britain at that time, and it was the earlier Allison powered version; faster below 25k feet but slower above that height, and inferior to the Spitfire Vb in climb and manoeuverability at all altitudes. Plus the numbers in service at that time were low. The Hurricane was being phased out as a frontline fighter by then, and was being used for ground attack instead.

Or...the Spitfire. Most numerous and effective western front allied fighter of that time, in constant frontline use use from 1939 to beyond 1945..used in large numbers for Circus and Rhubarb missions over France...used in Russia...Africa, the Middle East, the far East, Australia..used on carriers..in the tropics, above the arctic circle...

.....oooops! But not available at all in IL-2!

Any chance of seeing it sometime?

Beautiful update. With titles like 'CaenCastle' and "Omaha Bunker", it's clear that the D-Day and post D-Day battle scenarios are being modeled. That means we should be getting Spit IX's, Typhoons, Mosquitos, Mitchells, Marauders, P-38s and Liberators in addition to what has been shown and what we already have. Maybe even Stirlings as glider tugs and British night bombers. True, historical D-Day missions can't promise much in air-to-air combat. Priller and co. wisely avoided the swarms of allied fighters and just strafed the British beaches. I think Battle of France missions would be better, if we could get a flyable French plane.

For the record, 4 Ju88s also attacked (unsuccessfully) allied ships on D-Day. Also, a squadron of E-Boats sank a Norwegian warship. I plan to include these obscure little episodes in my D-Day mission. (My grandfather was a gunnery officer on a U.S. warship which traded fire with German artillery so I've heard a lot of stories from him.) There just weren't a lot of German counterattacks, so D-Day missions are bound to be pretty lopsided.

On D-Day, there were not many air combats but in the following weeks there was intense fighting involving many of the greatest pilots of the war (like Clostermann for the RAF or Weissenberger for the LW).

That said, these aircraft are welcome, wherever we'll use them.

Did you see these Mustangs and this H-75 ? Wonderful. Though not a great stang fan, I'm really eager to see them fly (and to fly them), partivularly the one with the Malcolm canopy (never modelled in a PC sim as far as I know, that's not like the P-51D we saw again and again).

BTW, didn't the british Mustangs have a different armament, I thought I had heard something about it ?

Dude. Calm down. Soon you WILL have your Med aircraft. Your also gettign the AIR 80 and 81. I have flown them myself at E3. Add to that my P-38, and the other aircraft you can make some Med missions yourself. Making maps are extreamly complicated and time consuming for Oleg's team, but who knows.

Also, the B/C was lighter. Had less range and was a bit more nimble. A better dogfighter then the D, but the D was mainly built for range as an escort fighter.

Remember fellows, way back when, that picture of all those ships parked off the coast - described as a theoretical "D-Day" scenario by Steffan Trombke (look in the early FB preview pics):

http://www.il2sturmovik.com/forgotten_battles/devupdate/d_day1.jpg

Well looks like we're getting it!!

Imagine, flying a Jug armed to the teeth, over an ocean full of allied ships that are pounding the coast with artillery. Then flying low over the Normandy countryside, bombs and missiles (?) screaming on to Wermacht positions and fleeing armor. Sounds fun.

Awesome work Oleg and team, Luthier, and the rest of you folks. We fans are going to have a blast!!

P.S. please keep those far East developments coming - I foresee some heated online competition against our Asian buddies in Japan.

Bf109 v. B17?

Hell, I'm drooling for the day when there are online missions with planes starting at high altitude (7500 m +).

Imagine...

A team of players in Fw190D9s approaching a staggering number of B17s in box formation, flying 1500 meters above them, desperately trying to gain altitude before they drop their bombs.

Then, out of the corner of their eye the silver glint of aluminum, as the other team charges into them with their p51Ds, 6 x 0.50 cabs blazing away!

The action at high altitude feels different, as maneuvers are drawn out and you feel like you're in suspended animation.

A Fw190D v. B17 and p51D mission would be a whole new experience in FB!!

I for one, played to Western theatre to death in Battle of Britain, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, CFS 1, and a few other ones on my shelves. Granted, none were really the caliber of Il-2 (FB is still relatively buggy....(Know about the July 30th patch)

Do not get me wrong, I would love a sim of Il-2 caliber that would model the Western Front. On the other hand, a med/North Africa sim has never been done, and this would be a great addition, using the patched FB engine. As well, a lot of the planes required over the Med theatre have never been modelled and/or flyable in a WWII sim. I am very looking forward to flyable MC. 202 & 205, G.55, Re 2005, SM 79, Cant 1007, & all the Trop Luftwaffe A/C. Some allied AC would also be cool such as the Tank buster Hurricane.

Some of the terrain & locations would just be awesome too. Tarento, Malta, Sicilia, Libya, Crete, Gustav line, Yougoslavia, Gibraltar, Oran, Grece.....just so much potential! Add the British convoy to Malta, the plight of the Italian Navy, and all the ships present in the mediteranean sea. The allied landings in Italy, Anzio-Annie rail guns........Later, the attacks of the German radio controlled flying bombs on the British ships & surrendered Italian fleet...

Let's get a Med add-on, then we can revisit the Western theatre!

My 2 cents.

Ok ppl listen up. IL-2 Sturmovik is DEAD. it long gone the way of CFS and other out dated sims. How ever, it has been replaced with some thing much better. FORGOTTEN BATTLES.

Over the weekend i had to do a fresh install of FB.
as i dug out my FB disk from the bottom desk drawer i noticed something. the Title. It is <as it reads on the jewl case>

FORGOTTEN BATTLES WWII 1941-1945

So i'll say this hopefully plainly enough so that some of you actually get it to sink into your thick skulls./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS SIMS TITLE THAT SAYS IT IS AN EASTERN FRONT ONLY SIM!!!

That being said. Get over it. the eastern front is over, lets move on to some thing else shall we? I see no reason that this sim cannot move on to differant theaters, and in fact we are heading in that direction. and it obviuos were we're going. there will be add ons and we all know this.
I see three new fronts on the horizon for the game and they are the Pacific,Med, and some part of western euorpe. No what comes 1st and when i have no idea. but it is clear to the open minded thoughtful person that somewere down the line durring the development of th FB a decision was made that the game is going to add a broader territory to it's theater of opperations.

also consider the size of the maps in FB.

translate that into Europe scale

if gulf of finland gets modelled and that is huge, just think what a map of that size gets us in europe.

oooh, normandy bunkers. but that means the channel, and maybe the south of England.

so not only 1944 overlord becomes possible, but all of a sudden we get the option of

1941-42 fighter sweeps.

1940 daylight RAF raids using blenhiems

some france 1940

battle of britain anyone?

D-Day

the breakout from the beachhead

and that would be off one say 400x400 mile map

Well we should congratulate Oleg and his team for this magnificent flightsim.
The fact that they are so openhearted and openminded towards the IL2 community is one of a kind.
This is an example to many developers.

The work they are doing on this flightsim is absolutly amazing.
Maybe things aren't always perfekt and in a sim everything needs tuning and tweaking and nothing is ever perfekt as it is a simulator and not the real thing.
You can try to get it as close as you can with the resources and ppl available and that is just what they have been doing.

We (The Belgian Virtual Tigers) have been demonstrating on this flightsim from about the time the first IL2 came out and the response from the public is astunishing.

The three big screens show an awfull lot of action and that is a garantee to draw a crowd.
The missionbuilder is perfekt to generate the missions we want to show with the aircraft the public wants to see.

The observer is working great on LAN and whenever one of the pilots, that is connected to a viewer, is shot down we can show action outside views of the battle that is still raging.

This year at Waddington AS we held a competition as people gotten their chance to try the sim themselves they would take off on parallel runway's and engaged by FW's and 109's the last one in the air wins a ticket ofr the quarterfinals later on that day.

Me alone ,I had questions about that sim about 30 to 40 times a day. Not even taking in acount our other members.

Pictures and info can be found on http://users.pandora.be/jean-marie.dirix/ensponsor/

We have an IL2 site upcomming as one of the tripple-site that will belong to our demonstrationteam.
Including Falcon 4.0 SP3/4, FS2002/4 and off course IL2FB

Keep it comming Oleg and team, you make it we'll show it ;-)

Nice.. even though if it would be up to me, I would stich in Eastern Front.. and update FB.. with even more Eastern Front A/Cs.. there is plenty of unmodelled planes waiting.. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Instead there are dozens of Western front games..

Hi...i very rarely post but play online alot! I just wanted to say a big thankyou too all involved in the making of IL2 and IL2 FB especially.

Ive been flight simming since Psion's Flight simulator on the zx spectrum (ahh memories!) and i think that we are finally almost at the point where the game actually makes you feel like your doing the thing for real!

Kudos to all involved and to all the folks that make add-on planes, skins etc etc etc

If it has to be the Western Front please do something interesting with it and keep it within the limitations of FB like low to medium alt battles. This would at least introduce aircraft like the Mozzies, Lancs and B24s which were used more in lower/med alt attacks. I personally would prefere to keep it Eastern or go the Med/Middle East/Africa but the lowest common denominator always rules in marketing and for the un-initiated it will be France as education is limited on other theatres of the war. Makes you wonder why they bother calling it World War.

Maybe we can try virtual senarios like Stalin pushing West through Germany and going up against the Yanks/Brits or vice versa. Could be interesting and at least Churchill was for kicking Stalin out of Eastern Europe.

Wow the P-51B!

Will it be 5mph faster then the D model?
Will it have more directional stability then the cutaway fuselage D?
Will it be more agile because of the two 4x .50 instead of the D's 6x?
will it have better alround vision with the brithish 'Malcom hood'buble canopy, then the standard D buble canopy?

This is why some Ace's prefered their 'old' B/C Mustang over the newer D!

Something simular happend in the luftwaffe where the Experten preferd their 109 F over the newer G model wich was heavier, less agile but had heavier weapons wich was welcomed by the comon pilots who did not like the Ferdinand's 'weak'armament.
The LW Ace's expert at shooting tought the Ferdinand was the best Bf 109

Ps less enthaushast on the depressing wheater forecast for the channel front i would rather have some sunny Medetereanian or north African climate! (whe live under the depressing wheater of the Netherlands, while my wife is from Greece)

Thank you Oleg,
You certainly answered my thread about a P51B, thanks for including it. On another note, why is everybody assumming there will be a Normandy map coming, just because they see the Caen Fortress? Aren't these bunkers and the Fortress third party? In any case, Oleg, if you do ever decide to do a Fortess Europe addon, I've rarely seen any British heavies such as the Lancaster and Wellington or Whitworth in a ww2 flight sim, except maybe on Bill Gates piece of crap he tries to pass off as a flight sim. It would be nice to see a pro like you or your team do these planes justice. By the way, I'll be in Moscow Aug 13 for 3 weeks...can I buy you a beer?

I have an idea - Luftwaffe had one of the B-17 (see details below). Could we see this model in the special add-on?

Details - B-17F-27-BO, 41-24585, ex-"Wulf Hound" of 360th BS/303rf BG, which fell into Luftwaffe hands in France on December 12, 1942. In September 1943 it was being tested at Rechlin, coded DL+XC, and was later turned over to I/KG200 to be used for special operations. The aircraft retains its olive drab top surfaces, but the undersides were painted yellow. Of note are the oversized marking and the absence of ball turret.
