S!

Ok, i have a problem here.... PF and il-2 have never run smoothly on my computer... there are some good moments sometimes, when everything works, but usually my screen somehow freezes, from time to time.. And sometimes when my screen freezes, i got kicked from the server. Sometimes, after been kicked, a windows announcement pops up into my desktop, which says that i´m "low on virtual memory".

You can imagine, of how frustrating that is....

I noticed that my graphics card, abit radeon 9200se (which sux, btw) is not directX9 compatible, only directX7... and it says behind PF´s cd-case, on the system requirements "directX9 compatible craphics card".

Could that be the reason for those freeze up´s? Is there such thing as a "system lag" which is not caused by my internet connection, rather my under powered graphics card... Usually, my pings aren´t that high...

My computer matches all the other reguirements of PF. It´s a pentium 4, with 2,4mhz processor and it has 512mb ram... My internet connection is 8mbit/1mbit broadband.

Thx!

Well, from the limited information you've given, I'd say lack of RAM plays into the problem. It not only will cause stutter, but can increase your ping rate as well. See Luckyboy's Guide For Complete Users and pay special attention to the Black Viper tweaks to help shut down processes you don't want, need and can cause security concerns.

Also, see the Guide on how to post your diagnosis. we need a look at it in order to give you better advice than just a guess, which beyond the RAM is what we'd be doing here with the information you've already given.

Memory: 510MB RAM

That's an odd figure ... I shoud expect 512MB here.

Do you check your CPU Temps?
Maybe they're too high? (Dust inside the cover?)

Test your memory: http://hcidesign.com/memtest

sapper78

i checked those temps, here they are.

Motherboard: 40c (104F)
CPU: 433c (109F)
Aux: 41c (106F)

How about if i buy more memory tomorrow, and update from 512m to 1024megs?

Or should i buy new graphics card first? (i dont have the money to do both) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Try lowering Sound Hardware acceleration to Standard...look under the Sound tab in the DxDiag utility.
Personally I'd go for a better graphics card. 9800's are getting cheap these days.

steve_v
12-30-2004, 02:50 PM
Your card supports dx8. If it was a true dx7 card, the agp status in your dxdiag would read not available, instead of Enabled. To run the Perfect option, all you need is a dx8 card. To take advantage of the new hardware shaders, ect., in dx9, a new dx9 card is required. (such as the nvidia 6800 series)

Lower sound hardware accelertion to Standard in the dxdaig tool.

Having ingame settings that your hardware cannot deliever will also cause freezing. Are the temps you posted for the cpu at idle or under load?

Have you done any virtual memory/ swap file tweeking?

sapper78
12-30-2004, 03:24 PM
Alllrighty then... i lowered my sound hardware acceleration to basic acceleration. What does that mean, btw? Has it any advantages, if it´s set to highest?

Those temparatures were idle values... i had only internet explorer on... my comp had been running for 6 hours, when i checked those temps... does it matter?

"Have you done any virtual memory/ swap file tweeking? " No... too difficult for mehttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So you guys think that the right thing to do, is to buy a new graphics card? I was thinking of buying Geforce 6600GT... but will that solve the problem? Since my OS told that my comp is lacking virtual memory, Should i double my ram to 1GB instead?

Buying more memory would be cheaper, but my present graphics card is coming to the end of it´s road any day now, so that´s one thing i have to change sooner or later... on the other hand, i haven´t got enough ram for at least for the future games.

Hi I red your problem I ahave a Pentium 4, 3.4 Ghz, with 4x 512 DDR Ram and a GeForce 5950 Ultra Videocard from leadtek with DX 9.0c and it still stutters a little bit.

It's just ademanding game. Buy a good card like the GeForce 6800 (expensive but good an put in 4x 512 DDR RAM (not expensive). and you'll fly with your mouth open.

FoolTrottel

Be carefull in byuing a new Video Card, before you know it, your CPU will not be able to hanlde it...

What I've read from other post here is that an expensive 6800 will not be worth it, with your CPU... to have all the fun with it, you'll need more memory, ánd a faster CPU (i.e. motherboard, PSU ... you name it..)

(I've got a P4 2.4, 1GB RAM, TI-4200. It runs, not perfect, but excellent. I am not going to upgrade this system, I'll replace it in due time...)
(There's a large diffrence between a P4 3.4Ghz and P4 2.4Ghz, not only speed but also the motherboard....)

Go for the extra 512Mb, if you can get it for a nice budget...
And, maybe get a cheaper (refurbished? 2nd hand?) Video Card more suited to your system... (like a TI-4200 or One Step Beyond... like ATI 9800 Pro)

Yes, all in all, this hardware business *s Maddness..;-)

this is only my opinion but I wouldnt like you to rush out without considering what on and why you may wish to spend money so please take some time and then come to your decision.

I think that before you do so please read luckyboys guide and my guide to Il2 optimisation both at http://www.airwarfare.com/index.htm in guides.

these should give you some background.

Wether you decide to upgrade will depend on what you want your pc to do. And what your motherboard can take. And wether you will see as much of an improvement as you want for the money you spend.

If you decide to put in more memory then an extra 512 mb ram should allow the game to run smoother

Please make sure it is compatable with your motherboard and existing memeory. There will be a specification for memory on the manufacturers web site. I always recommend using crucial memory to ensure compatability.

Please take into account wether it is worth while upgrading within your current motherboard or if the money would be better going to upgrading to newer technology.

Hope this helps

Anytime the sim has to access the page file, it will stutter. The sim needs to have access to at least 800mb to be able to completely play on your memory and not have to access the page file. Your card isn't the best in the world for rendering this game, but, I'd say maxing out what your mobo will handle on memory will come closer to fixing the stutters than a video card. I'd say your max will be 1024MB or 1GB of ram. Then, if you can afford a better video card, get one. 128MB 256-Bit 9800Pro's are the best bang for the buck and can be found on ebay for less than $180.

Thank you all for helping me out with this matter!

I think i´ll go with extending my comp´s memory to 1Gig (at this time) Unfortunately, it seems that i have only 2 places in the motherboard for those memory-thingy´s (can it be possible?) So i have to take those 2 256 memories which i have, off, and buy 2 512 memories...

Sure, i´ve read a lot of about tweaking... the problem is that i dont understand a word from it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Them being written in english, which isn´t my native language, is not the problem, the subject itself is http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So i figured that if don´t really know what i´m doing, maybe i shouldn´t be doing it at all http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/351.gif

Oh dear.... i really miss those days, when Amiga 500 was the-state-of-the-art hardware for gaming http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The fact that you have a PCI video card tells me you probably do not have an AGP slot, so any AGP card would be out of the question. Having PCI slots does not make it so you can use a PCI Express card; they take PCI Express slots that are not the same as PCI slots. If your PC limits you to just PCI slots, I'd not stick the money into RAM or any video upgrade which would be minor at best. If you have an AGP slot, then you are good to go for several steps in upgrading. There is a link to a utility in Luckyboy's Guide For Complete users that will tell you if you have an AGP slot and tell you about your motherboard, RAM and more.

If you are limited by a PCI only motherboard, then I'd stick the money into an Audigy 2 card. It will relieve your CPU of some duties and be able to make the trip to your next PC.

Unfortunately, this game taxes your computer in all areas about as much as anything can. The primary audience for this game is middle aged men who have more than a few bucks to blow on computers. Just when you think you've got a computer that will run this game, they come out with something stupid like pixel shader 3.0 and you are back struggling again. It's a big part of why this game has not gone mainstream and probably never will. The core audience keeps whining for more eye candy and the developer is stupid enough to keep giving it to them.

Run that utility and tell us what your PC is capable of AGP wise.

Luckyboy

From his DXDIAG I think that this is sapper78s board and he has AGP capacity
http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/bv2/index.htm

and it looks like sapper78 is correct in that he only has 2 slots for ram- he can go to 2 sticks 512 DDR333 if he wants.

Sapper please confirm this is your board and luckyboy can come back with some best bangs for bucks advice

Yes, that´s my board, the Intel Desktop Board D845GEBV2.

So i really have only 2 slots for memories? ****... it would have been so cheap for me, if i had more slots... i wonder what those other slots were, that i found inside my computer... there were maybe 6 of them, and they were in a slighty different place than those memories... oh, they are seen in that picture, with the link that Dieg777 provided....

the white slots are PCI slots for adding cards such as modem, tv card, scsci controller etc.
the brown slot is your agp slot

Well then, in that case, my advice is to upgrade in this order...

RAM Sell the old modules on e-bay for indecent prices. Please consider that you may want to overclock and RAM is quite often the limiting factor when overclocking Intel chips. As a result, you may wish to buy 3200 speed RAM and it is not any more expensive really than 2700 RAM.

Get a 128 MB, 256 bit, 8 pixel pipeline 9800 Pro video card. Make sure you have enough power to run it before buying it. I wouls suggest the following power supply...

https://magnum-pc.securewebsiteserver.net/product_info.php?cPath=39_128&products_id=467&osCsid=4e55cc2da68bd3ed6766a01312c94f40

And I think Joe at Magnum speaks exotic languages like North Jersey and Newark! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Avoid the SE versions of the 9800 that has only 4 pixel pipelines or the Atlantis version that is a 128 MB, 128 bit card or anything not making the specs I asked for.

Then get the Audigy 1 or 2 sound card.

Then I stink you can upgrade as far as a 3.06 GHz Pentium IV CPU.

After that, you'll have to ask HH_Quazi to get out and push! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

As usual looks good advice however as you are from europe here are some recommendations closer to home in case import taxes too large from USA.

For memory buy crucial at
http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp
put your motherboard in the search and it will ensure compatability- you might buy cheaper but I wouldnt risk it.

for power supplies and graphics card see here

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/ this will show you the many types. Overclockers ship to europe if price is good compaired to where you are.

see here for graphics card-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/9700_to_9800_Series.html

take note of what luckyboy said - DO NOT BUY the ones with 4 pixel pipes or have SE in name or only 128 bit

good luck

You should be able to sell those sticks of you have now for between $35 and $45 each USD on eBay. That will offset your memory upgrade some. Also, if you are considering a video card upgrade, that 9200 will fetch between $70 and $90 USD on eBay also. Just a thought.

Ok, thank you all for those tips!

I think i´ll start saving money for new computerhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I´m not sure, is upgrading this old crappy pc, worth the effort...

How about this: Fujitsu-Siemes Scaleo TA A64 320-61, A64 3200+, with 1 gig of memory and Ati 9600XT 256MB?

It cost´s about 1100 euros in finland... but if i buy it on hire purchase, it would be only 50 euro´s/month... That should get me back in business...

dieg777
12-31-2004, 11:49 AM
It is really hard to say a definate yes or no as all systems have a balance on cost.
for example this system has an old type graphics card that only has 4 pipes the 9800 Pros are a better card. but this might suit your budget just now.

The X700 are newer still see here for some comments

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/sapphire_hybrid_radeon_x700_pro

here are some comparisons using IL2 to benchmark

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/sapphire_hybrid_radeon_x700_pro/page5.asp

I know that it will come down to cost but it is important to get a balance and pay attention to the motherboard you will get as this will limit how much you can expand and upgrade.

- main stream manufacturers like Fujitsu ,compaq and dell dont build for gamers but for mainstream. Dont know what the situation is in Finland but in uk MESH and other mail order companies offer better deals. There are also local computer shops that build to order- In uk we can get magazines like Computer Buyer that list plenty of options so try to pick up something similar for your country.

It is hard to give definate opinions as you may have different expectations to what I would say.
My best advice would be to take your time and carefully balance a range of options.

"Worth it" is such a subjective term that it becomes impossible to answer because "worth it" means something different to everyone you ask. If a game in question could be speeded up by a few frames per second, it can avoid spending a great deal of money on a new system in some cases. The person in question may only need a couple more frames to achieve perfect graphics and or sound in the game. This is when spending big bucks on fancy RAM helps and makes sense. Try to remember that even if you buy a new system now, the technology and the game code will march on and it will be dated as well. As a result, I'd say that if you are getting enjoyment from the game now, you'd enjoy the game so much more if you fixed up your current system. Of the upgrades possible, the sound card upgrade stands the best chance of making it into your next upgrade. It will help you in frames per second and give you much better sound at the same time.

"Worth it" is a matter of how much you want in performance and how much (in exact monitary numbers, not, "I don't want to spend too much" because what determines what "too much" is?) money you are willing to spend to get there.

LuckyBoy1
12-31-2004, 04:55 PM
By the way, forget the 9600 card. It is a 4 pixel pipeline video card and you are in essence, bringing a 4 pixel knife to a 8 pixel plus pipeline gunfight at best.

The technology of the day says go AMD 939 pin motherboard and a CPU with 1 MB of cache to go with it if you've got the money along with a 16 pixel pipeline video card. The route you are talking about taking will yield you no more than fixing up your current system.
