My nose still wallows up and down like my plane is a see-saw.

I have been playing around with the joystick settings in-game to try to counteract this. Could some of you please post the settings you use?

I have played around with the dead band and filtering quite a bit, and it does seem to help. I would be interested in trying some of your settings.

With the P-51 you really need to be trimming the AC instead of just forcing the stick.

A couple of clicks of down trim on the nose should fix your porpoising problem, and give you a cleaner ride.

Trim is a must for flying a plane like this. Having your trim mapped to nearby controls (like on your hatswitch, or a slider) is very handy. A good HOTAS will help with that.

I have a saitek x-52 and I have elevator trim mapped to the rotary on the side of the throttle. I normally try to keep it trimmed to fly as straight as possible, but I'll try some nose-down trim tonight. Just a couple degrees nose-down, I take it? And I shouldn't worry about changing any settings in the "input" menu for this?

I recently toned down my stick settings for flying the P-51. It took some time for me to adjust to the new settings, but the fine aim control is a lot better. I don't have my exact settings (I'm at work now), but I'll post them tonight when I get home.

Another thing that helped is to tone down the trim axes to about 30% across the board. Helps to get just the right amount of trim to keep the VSI and inclinometer centered, essential for gunnery in the Pony.

I have a CH Fighterstick, CH Propedals, and an X-45 for the throttle. I have elevator trim mapped on the thumb wheel on the throttle, and rudder trim on the finger wheel. For aileron trim, I use one of the hats on the stick.

You really should have rudder trim and aileron trim mapped for the P-51 too. I use them all the time. Much nicer to fly when it trimmed up perfect.

There is a utility called 'IL-2 Sticks'. With it you can adjust all of the usual ingame control settings and also use the sliders to set the force needed for trim. I have the trim set to all 50's on the elavator and all 60's on the rudder. Less jumping around that way. With IL-2 sticks you can also create and save different profiles for different types of planes.
You can only change settings when the game is not running.

The Settings I use are:

Pitch, Roll, & Rudder:
1 4 7 13 20 29 40 52 66 81
Pitch & Rudder Trim:
59 across the board.

straight 100's for everything else.

Thanks to all who replied.

I downloaded the Il-2 sticks program and set the trim axis to 50 across the board... I did notice that now it is much easier to find just the right setting at any given time.

I trim the plane constantly now, and I do trim it a bit nose-down, at least in combat. That helps too.

I changed the elevator input curve some. I'm not at home and don't have the exact number but the beginning of my curve has very low input sensitivity, starting with 1,4,8 similar to Akronnick's. Then furthur on it goes on up in even increments and tops out at about 75 or 80%.

The aileron and rudder I left alone, as I haven't really been having trouble with them.

This morning I was playing offline a bomber escort mission, and managed to get strikes on a 190 from about 850m away (tail chase, with about 10deg angle-off), which is a hell of a long shot for me.
