I stumbled across this.

They tried to cusion the fall with mattresses:

When did this happen? They probably got the mattresses from the "old" barracks. I have no idea how they thought they would cushion the fall.

If you look at the other pictures, the harrier came down vertically and presumably quite slowly. It looks like it was cushioned very well/

Some of those guys are blowing steam. Harrier can land quite gently.

Yeah and it goes through about 8 inches of travel in the undercarriage. I reckon a vertical landing without undercarriage at that speed would put quite a few flat spots in the airframe

Probably would have choked the engine or at least caused loss of power as soon as it went in.
