Duh, it was the twisty tie.
What is sliced bread without a reclosable bag?

That's an easy one,the best thing before sliced bread was-"liquid bread",a.k.a. beer.
If you meant since sliced bread-the answer is still beer.

Before sliced bread: the best thing would be the equi-thickness bread knife (or fidde-bow knife as it is also known). Avilable in several configurations, some of them overly complicated. It never caught on.

Beer is what makes the world go round...and round...and round... and round... and round...and round... and round... and round... until you fall over.

Sliced bread... meh...

Beer and bread-slicing don't go together so well, be sure, so maybe the best thing before sliced bread was a ready supply of bandages http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

@ maj_setback. Are those knives still available? As a one-armer I am sick of pre-sliced bread!

Found this one in Britain (mostly they seem to be sold in The States). It's a bit pricey, but adjustable though. Not only for bread!:

I fail to see what's so great about sliced bread. Best thing before sliced bread would be most other inventions.

Apparently, the toaster came first. See http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/bltoaster.htm

Seeing as he started in 1912 with it, I would say the thing before sliced bread would be the aeroplane (or airplane http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif )

Wheat.
If wheat hadn't been invented you couldn't make bread to slice.

It's very close. The concept of mechanically-sliced bread was first realised by Louis Bleriot's mechanic when he attempted to pass the great aviator his cross-Channel baguette through the propellor!

Jambon serrono y queso manchego. una cerveza por favor. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Past the limit of my Spanish. Enough for a good lunch i hope. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Jam√¬≥n serrano. Tho it's better to ask it as "jam√¬≥n ib√©rico": it's more expensive but it's real good stuff -coming from pigs fed just with holm oak acorn. Those pigs we call "pata negra" ("black leg") because of their darker hoofs, in opposition to other pigs, fed with fodder, and of inferior quality.

The legs are cured in very dry, dark and fresh conditions before passing quality controls. Badly cured hams are rejected, while the good ones are classified according to quality, salt levels, lard proportion, curation, etc. The best ones obtain five Js, this is 'JJJJJ', and can easily cost up to 600$ a piece or more, depending on weight and market.

Slicing it is also an art, and it must be done in very thin, small slices. To cut it in blocks is a crime.

The cheese is called 'manchego' because it comes from La Mancha, the region in Spain where the fictional knight Don Quixote had his quests and misfortunes. It's a tasty, strong cheese.

The best thing you can have in a summer afternoon is a shady place in a sunny day, a table, chairs, queso manchego, jam√¬≥n ib√©rico, a good 'Rioja' red wine, cold beer, bread, olives and good company.

Guess what I do on Friday afternoons.

I'd go with the wheel on this one, guys. Although Monty's suggestion did get serious consideration. But then we're in the realms of 'invention' or 'creation' aren't we - don't really want to go down that road.

DuxCorvan thanks, and now I know what do drink with it, a nice Rioja. Never tired this ham, but I have tried the manchego cheese and ummm is it ever good. Spanish olives and almonds are top for me too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
