View Full Version : Campaign: The Setting Sun (Ki-61/Ki-100)

I've finally finished my last little bit of work on The Setting Sun which is my latest campaign release for Pacific Fighters 4.04m (may also work with 4.02m and probably will work with 4.02/4.04 standalone but this is untested).

You will fly for the 59th Sentai which historically flew from Ashiya airfield in the northern section of Kyushu (Japanese home island). Mission objectives are varried from intercepting Avengers and Corsairs to trying to bring down a B-29 or two. Its a tough set of missions as you are generally flying aircraft that are slower, not as well armed, and not nearly as tough. But at the same time its very exciting and challenging. There is also a bonus campaign for Ki-84 lovers...you will fly select missions from the main campaign but with the 102nd Sentai for an alternate experience.

http://home.cogeco.ca/~cczerneda/imgs/settingsunposter.jpg

So far the campaign is available from Airwarfare (thanks for graciously hosting the campaign). Link here: http://www.airwarfare.com/Sims/FB/fb_campaigns_icefire.htm

Enjoy!

Kewl thanks!....Only other campaign I've ever flown was a Me-163 one which was fun. Not that you'd ever catch me in a Ki-61 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'll let you know how well the B-29s deal with <span class="ev_code_RED">TAIATARI / Shinten Seiku-Tai</span>

Looks good. Can't wait to play. BTW, does anyone remember the name of the thread about usermade campaigns awhile back?

The GD thread was User-made Campaign Recommendations" I think.

Sorry about that! I figured nobody else was doing one so it was about time I stepped in. I rather like the Ki-61 and Ki-100 anyways...so it was a natural fit.

And some Ki-84 missions as well??!! Now everyone will think I'm a copycat!

Look forward to trying it out! I've been flying the Bong campaign and the 7FS campaign and Japa. fighters have shot my Lightning down almost every mission so far. So I should be invincible once I get into the Tony's 'pit, right?

BTW great artwork!

This looks great but I can't get it to run.

I unzipped the file into the IL-2FB root directory and it created the folders for SettingSun and FierceGale in the Missions\Campaign\JA folder - each of which contains all the appropriate mis files etc. But when I go to pilot career and select IJA all I get is the new background and all the other boxes are empty so I can't select it to play.

What idiotic mistake have I made this time? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Cheers,

RD.

All the boxes are empty? Even the DGEN option is missing?

RocketDog
03-18-2006, 03:37 PM
Yep - I'm afraid so, but only for the IJA campaign, the others look OK. I installed the new DGEN and Nimit's true Pacific from SimHQ. I wonder if that's fouled it up? Neither were easy installs because of trying to identify where everything should go.

At the moment I can generate or play campaigns for everything but the IJA. If I select IJA, I don't even get the rising sun insignia or a choice of rank etc. All the boxes are empty. Hitting generate just sends the game back to the main menu. Something obviously astray.

I will try and get a pristine copy of the missions folder from my brother tomorrow and start again.

Cheers,

RocketDog.

Yep...sounds like something else unrelated has fouled it up. I usually try to ensure that its not something that I produced that can cause these sorts of problems...I do try http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

So I suspect its probably the other package(s) that you installed. Since even the normal DGEN thing is missing. Probably something has been changed, renamed, or removed in the IJA folder.

Feathered, why don't you make a Ki-61 campaign set in New Guinea?? There are some resources online, plus lots of written material and it's a big gap in the current spectrum of campaigns. Because it was a 2-way campiagn with both sides attempting to take the offensive, the types of missions you could fly would in fact be greater and more varied than on Kyushu. You could have bomber escorts, sea attacks, gound attacks, CAP's, US bomber intercepts for several types. The list goes on.

Not to mention beating the winter blues with palm trees and beaches. Just watch out for the sharks if you have to ditch.

Its an excellent idea...I half considered doing that myself. The lack of a truly historical map for the ops makes things difficult but you can probably work around that.

I'm getting more philosophical about these things as time goes on. I've already swallowed the pill that Normandy isn't the Pas de Calais/ NW Belgium for my Schlageter campaign. It still looks like France when you fly over it even if the geographical features aren't quite what they should be. I'm considering making a "Jugs over Guinea" campaign and I can live a lot more easily with 1 part of New Guinea not being what it historically should be. NG is pretty large and featureless by European standards. The other aspect of NG is the massive distances involved using correct maps. "Flying" from Buna to Milne Bay takes over an hour. Flying Buna to Wewak would take far longer, even if we had Wewak on our map. So all but the most intense "immersion" guys would want some map editing anyway. 1 of the missions in the interesting Bong campaign is an hour and a half round trip, without d/f time worked in. I haven't tried playing it, but I'm @#*&^-ing sure I'd probably jam my flaps halfway through and get picked off by some lurking Oscar.

(BTW check out the islands at the extreme NE corner of the New Guinea map for a possible stand-in for Vella Lavella or Bougainville or a generic South Pacific locale.)

You may want to have a look, in terms of Jug campaigns, the operations made by some Razorback P-47s over the Marianas islands in a mop-up action to clear the islands of any remaining Japanese resistance. They launched from the decks of escort carriers if you can believe that...

I've seen the skins of the mission on Flying Legends. Someone did virtually the entire squadron. BTW there's a good Marianas F6F campaign on Airwarfare called "2 Days in June". I'm leery about the designer's take on altitudes, but otherwise it's reasonably solid and a lot of fun.

I still can't figure out how the Jugs were launched from not just a carrier, but an escort carrier at that! The type was notoriously slow to take off. The P-47 pilots on Guinea had a joke that if the CB's built an airstrip right around the world, Republic would design a plane that couldn't quite take off on it.

I remember reading an article about Ie Shima, well known for its very short and very muddy fighter strip. It was considered cruelly unlucky to be assigned to a Jug squadron operating there for self-evident reasons.

Ohh well, if Billy Mitchell could take off in a fully-loaded B-25 from a carrier, I guess it's possible for a Jug to take off from one as well.

I wonder if they catapulted the P-47s off the escort carriers. That or the stripped it of everything....

I wonder if you can take off from a P-47 in the game....

*off to try*

Actually, it was James Doolittle who took off from a carrier in a fully laden B-25, not Billy Mitchell. The B-25 did receive the name "Mitchell", though.

the 318FG P-47s on their way to Saipan used the catapult to launch from the CVE

check this side
http://home.att.net/~historyzone/Seversky-Republic6.html (http://home.att.net/%7Ehistoryzone/Seversky-Republic6.html)

its not possible to launch a P-47 from the deck of an escort carrier in game- actually you can if you aditing its speed in the mission file and making it much faster than 35km/h http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif......
Fleetcarrier is possible, sure only if the carrier is moving ! and you should have not more than 50% fuel loaded.
we had such a mission in VOW2 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
i used the LEX-class in that : its the fastest carrier, and the longest.

JG53Frankyboy
03-20-2006, 06:02 AM
wow. i checked my old mission with the 4.04 FM !
i was able to launch a P-47D-22 with 100% fuel and additional ammo easy from a Lex at full speed - that was not possible at the time i build that mission !

propably the AI will be not able to do the same http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

i edited a CVE to 18m/s speed (almost 65km/h) and a was able to launch the P-47D-22 with 50% fuel from it - neverthelss the water was damn close http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif - so perhaps 20m/s should do it...

Yeah but if you added about a 30 m/s wind speed as well the plane would take off as soon as you released the chocks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

How do you do this exactly? I was poking in the .mis file last night and I couldn't find anything to represent speed.

It's the last number set in each line of a ship's road. For a carrier, it's default set at nine-point-something. You delete this number set and replace it with a more appropriate one, such as 18.5, which approximates to about 35 MPH IIRC. The catch is that the default re-sets each time you feed the .mis file thru FMB. So you have to keep on resetting.

Heya IceFire, just started this campaign over the weekend and am currently up to mission 4.
Another top effort mate and having a blast with it so far. Haven't flown many of the Japanese aircraft at all so its somethig a little unique for me.
If anyone reading this hasnt tried it yet... then go grab it!!

Cheers! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
