View Full Version : Whats the line in the conf.ina to hear planes on your six?

Someone posted this before. Something about distance attenuation, while not in the FB GUI is still in the conf.ini, and it's value can be changed to better hear the planes around you (good for full real settings games)

Anybody know about this? I think Hunter originally posted it in the techforum as his sound settings.

It's in conf.ini right? What section is it under? I couldn't locate it. Is it something we add?

RayBanJockey,

you mentioned some tweaks to the conf file to increase the sensitivity of the slider, would you be so kind as to post some info here.

thanks,

No, you don't ever have to open the conf.ini it is just set when you complete the third part of the RBJ Shift: modifying the properties of the pitch axis (and the aeilerons too if so desired)

I am taking a wild guess here but isn't it simply the speaker setting to surround in the sound options.

No, man.

Ok seeing as how nobody here has a clue I went to the trouble of opening my conf.ini and found the line

Attenuation=7

I'm pretty sure if you change this value you can hear planes trying to sneak up on you.

Maybe it's because nobody else cares about exploits to get the edge and try to defeat their foes with skill instead.

You is wrong.

Just because some people use things to their advantage, doesn't have anything to do with their skill.

Skill and exploits are 2 different things, and neither have anything to do with one another (except for being a convienient one liner). Real aces used exploits too and I'm sure the ones who used the most exploits had the most skill. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

I think RBJ has a valid point about real pilots using every exploit they could find. Most of those exploits came from surviving; they had simply been through enough to pick up on important tricks. Their lives were on the line and it was good thinking.

However, I don't think it applies to gamers the same way it did to real pilots. The goals are different. Not saying you shouldn't use exploits, they're fine, especially when agreed upon. It's just that they're not compatible among everyone. Making generalizing statements has never really helped any of us along these lines though. As someone's thread says/said: We should take all the generalists out and have them shot. (Love the irony. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif )

----------------------------------------------------------
Instructions for "The RayBanJockey ShiftT"

Follow this path on your computer: Start-> Control Panel -> Game Controllers -> Microsoft Force Feedback 2 -> Properties -> Settings. Click "Reset to default" and "OK" out of there, closing it all.

Obtain "Fedit" the Microsoft Force Editor program. This is the hard part. It is a top secret program that you can't find on the internet anymore. Well you can, but your going to have to try hard. Sorry I can't email it to you. (hint: try http://yaim.host.sk )

Using this program you can modify the force feedback (ffb) effects in IL2, that are located in the ForceFeedback folder in your IL2 Forgotton Battles folder. Make sure you make a backup copy of all your default ffb files first before experimenting.

Modifying all of the ffb effects in IL2 is necesary for two reasons. The ffb effects are too strong. Just try holding onto the trigger of a 109K4 with dual Mk108 gun pods firing all its guns and cannons. It's enough to make that heavy stick rattle off the table like a football player in one of those games that vibrate. They are all 2 to 3 times too strong except for the bomb ffb effect. The second reason is that there are also alot of ffb bugs that can ruin your flight simming experience. For example, If you take a P47 with bombs and rockets, your guns fire and feel ok till you drop your bombs and rockets, then the ffb effect of dropping the bombs and rockets gets transferred (and combined) to the initial press of the guns button, and will remain like that even after you have run out of ammo. (a generous FB user, Smokin256, has solved this problem ... see http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=Olegmaddoxreadyroom&id=zvdwm ) The single mortar ffb effect due to the intial press of super heavy cannons (ex P39, Yak9K and T) is another ffb effect that follows this flawed sequence. All planes that drop bombs or fire rockets or fire super heavy cannons are affected. Alot of people just open up their ffb files and delete the contents of the offending files, but not me. I tweak them all out so they are lower in volume, low enough that the most I will ever get is a pleasant vibrating feeling.

The first part of fixing trim is modifying your "spring" ffb file. It is the only ffb file you will need to mess with to fix the trim. Open the Fedit program. Close the default Fedit1 window. Click "File" -> Open -> find the location of your spring ffb file, highlight it and open. Remember that there is an error when you open this file. Some of the values will not be the same as the values that were last saved. So if you open this, you will have to redo the offsets for both axes (0 and 1) and redo the Saturation for Spring Axis 1.

Put the cursor over the white bar that runs right to left in the spring ffb window. Right click and select Properties. The Spring Axis 0 (X axis) tab should be showing. Check "Use same coefficient for both negative and positive". Verify that the Coefficient slider (pyramid effect) is 10000. The Saturation slider (return to center power) is the one to modify to reduce the strength you need to move the stick. Because the trim in FB is so slow, it exposes any elevator forces that may be deemed to hard. I set mine to 5000 (default is 10000) and that feels about right. (or 6000 for that feeling of "rails" .. if used with an Y axis setting of 5000). Verify that the "Offset" and "Deadband" for the The Spring Axes 0 (X axis) are both zero.

Now click the "Spring Axis 1" tab (Y axis) Check "Use same coefficient for both negative and positive". Verify that the Coefficient slider (pyramid effect) is 10000. Set the Saturation slider to 5000 Verify that the Deadband is zero. Set your offset here to -2000. What this does is move the centering forces of the Y axis on the stick a fifth of the way forward. Close the effect properties box. click File and Save your new spring ffb file. If it is in your main IL2 Forgotton Battles ForceFeedback folder it will work.

The next part of fixing trim is recalibrating your Microsoft FFB2 Joystick.

Follow this path on your computer: Start-> Control Panel -> Game Controllers -> Microsoft Force Feedback 2 -> Properties -> Settings -> Calibrate
You will get a message, "Welcome to the Device Calibration Wizard" Click Next to continue.
You will get a message, "Find Center Point". Ignore this and click next.
Axis Calibration: Check "display Raw data". Do not touch the part of the joystick that activates the force feedback (laser in front). Position the joystick so the X Axis position is 0, and the Y axis position is 102 (a fifth of the way down), and it stays there if you do not touch it. Now click the "Back" button.
Without disturbing the joystick hit the "Next" button.
You are now back in the "Axis Calibration" section. Verify that the X and Y axis still say 0 and 102. Move the joystick all the way right, all the way left, all the way up, and all the way down a few times (sets the range of X and Y axis). Position the joystick so the X Axis position is 0, and the Y axis position is 102 and it stays there if you do not touch it. Click "Next". Without disturbing the position of the joystick, click "next" again at the "Verify Center Point".
Follow the rest of the instructions in the Device Calibration Wizard, click "Finish" and click "Apply". Click "Ok" and exit the Game Controller Manager.

The last step to fix the trim in Il2 Forgotton Battles is to modify the Pitch axis properties inside the game.

Run IL2 Forgotton Battles -> Hardware Setup -> Input.
Verify that the "pitch" axis is selected. You may notice that even though your joystick is centered, the position indicator shows it being above the center. This is to be expected due to your recent new joystick calibration. It is your new center. The problem here is that row of sliders all point to the old center, and will cause asymetric influences on your new center. To fix this, move all of the sliders for the pitch axis up to 100. This linearizes the travel of the controller over the entire Y axis. Set the filtering to .1 (1 notch from the leftmost position) This will soften the crispness of all the sliders being at 100. Verify that the Dead Band is zero and force feedback switch is lit, and click "back" to exit and save your changes. You can also do the same to your ailerons axis (all 100's and filtering to .1) because otherwise when you move the stick diagonally it will not move in a true diagonal.

Well there now you have it! Now you can go back and forth between the hardest turn possible (newbies refer to this as "bat turns"), and leveling out hands free, within 2-3 seconds of each other, and be in complete control 100% of the time! You may notice now to fly level your trim on a slider will be much farthur back than before. (I made sure to leave you a little room to up trim) People who aren't aces, who haven't talked to their mechanic, they will take like 10 seconds longer to be at max trim, and will also take forever to get back. Sounds like they will be fighting the stick as much as they are fighting you! You will be only a few seconds from max trim, and can come out of it with much better ease. The funny thing is, you won't even be able to tell the difference...until you turn at high speeds or make your boom and zoom window "double wide". Everything feels great! The only minor drawback is that you will never want to fly planes that have no elevator trim ever again.

I have a question for you Ray.
If you were playing Ms. Pac Man (as we all know you do) and you had a choice of:

A. Play to best of your abilities and live with the score you earned.

B. Push a little purple polka-dotted button that will automatically give you the highest score ever in the history of Ms. Pac Man.

Which one would you chose?
I think we have an idea of what you would choose.

I was the Pac-Man player who had the Pac-man code defeated.

In fact, I can still remember the the solution (the one where you could do the same moves almost every time..right up to the point where you are running right at the monster and he switched directions just in time)

I get the most out my quarter. The funny thing is I can play Pac-Man for free...all I need is a paper clip bent a certain way to get unlimited credits (works on Galaga and Spy Hunter, and various other games with the same coin box type)

There is no law against recalibrating your stick, or changing your FFB files, or changing your hardware joystick settings.

I just talked to my mechanic.

Now will someone who is an attenuation value changer please post their results?

-----------------------------------------------------------
- Instructions for "The RayBanJockey ShiftT"
-
- Follow this path on your computer: Start-> Control
- Panel -> Game Controllers -> Microsoft Force
- Feedback 2 -> Properties -> Settings. Click "Reset
- to default" and "OK" out of there, closing it all.
-
- Obtain "Fedit" the Microsoft Force Editor program.
- This is the hard part. It is a top secret program
- that you can't find on the internet anymore. Well
- you can, but your going to have to try hard. Sorry
- I can't email it to you. (hint: try http://yaim.host.sk )
-
- Using this program you can modify the force feedback
- (ffb) effects in IL2, that are located in the
- ForceFeedback folder in your IL2 Forgotton Battles
- folder. Make sure you make a backup copy of all
- your default ffb files first before experimenting.
-
- Modifying all of the ffb effects in IL2 is necesary
- for two reasons. The ffb effects are too strong.
- Just try holding onto the trigger of a 109K4 with
- dual Mk108 gun pods firing all its guns and cannons.
- It's enough to make that heavy stick rattle off the
- table like a football player in one of those games
- that vibrate. They are all 2 to 3 times too strong
- except for the bomb ffb effect. The second reason
- is that there are also alot of ffb bugs that can
- ruin your flight simming experience. For example,
- If you take a P47 with bombs and rockets, your guns
- fire and feel ok till you drop your bombs and
- rockets, then the ffb effect of dropping the bombs
- and rockets gets transferred (and combined) to the
- initial press of the guns button, and will remain
- like that even after you have run out of ammo. (a
- generous FB user, Smokin256, has solved this problem
- ... see <a
- href="http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-
- topic.asp?name=Olegmaddoxreadyroom&id=zvdwm"
- target=_blank>http://forums.ubi.com/messages/messa
- ge_view-topic.asp?name=Olegmaddoxreadyroom&id=zvdw
- m</a> ) The single mortar ffb effect due to the
- intial press of super heavy cannons (ex P39, Yak9K
- and T) is another ffb effect that follows this
- flawed sequence. All planes that drop bombs or fire
- rockets or fire super heavy cannons are affected.
- Alot of people just open up their ffb files and
- delete the contents of the offending files, but not
- me. I tweak them all out so they are lower in
- volume, low enough that the most I will ever get is
- a pleasant vibrating feeling.
-
-
- The first part of fixing trim is modifying your
- "spring" ffb file. It is the only ffb file you will
- need to mess with to fix the trim. Open the Fedit
- program. Close the default Fedit1 window. Click
- "File" -> Open -> find the location of your spring
- ffb file, highlight it and open. Remember that
- there is an error when you open this file. Some of
- the values will not be the same as the values that
- were last saved. So if you open this, you will have
- to redo the offsets for both axes (0 and 1) and redo
- the Saturation for Spring Axis 1.
-
- Put the cursor over the white bar that runs right to
- left in the spring ffb window. Right click and
- select Properties. The Spring Axis 0 (X axis) tab
- should be showing. Check "Use same coefficient for
- both negative and positive". Verify that the
- Coefficient slider (pyramid effect) is 10000. The
- Saturation slider (return to center power) is the
- one to modify to reduce the strength you need to
- move the stick. Because the trim in FB is so slow,
- it exposes any elevator forces that may be deemed to
- hard. I set mine to 5000 (default is 10000) and
- that feels about right. (or 6000 for that feeling of
- "rails" .. if used with an Y axis setting of 5000).
- Verify that the "Offset" and "Deadband" for the The
- Spring Axes 0 (X axis) are both zero.
-
- Now click the "Spring Axis 1" tab (Y axis) Check
- "Use same coefficient for both negative and
- positive". Verify that the Coefficient slider
- (pyramid effect) is 10000. Set the Saturation
- slider to 5000 Verify that the Deadband is zero.
- Set your offset here to -2000. What this does is
- move the centering forces of the Y axis on the stick
- a fifth of the way forward. Close the effect
- properties box. click File and Save your new spring
- ffb file. If it is in your main IL2 Forgotton
- Battles ForceFeedback folder it will work.
-
-
-
- The next part of fixing trim is recalibrating your
- Microsoft FFB2 Joystick.
-
- Follow this path on your computer: Start-> Control
- Panel -> Game Controllers -> Microsoft Force
- Feedback 2 -> Properties -> Settings -> Calibrate
- You will get a message, "Welcome to the Device
- Calibration Wizard" Click Next to continue.
- You will get a message, "Find Center Point". Ignore
- this and click next.
- Axis Calibration: Check "display Raw data". Do not
- touch the part of the joystick that activates the
- force feedback (laser in front). Position the
- joystick so the X Axis position is 0, and the Y axis
- position is 102 (a fifth of the way down), and it
- stays there if you do not touch it. Now click the
- "Back" button.
- Without disturbing the joystick hit the "Next"
- button.
- You are now back in the "Axis Calibration" section.
- Verify that the X and Y axis still say 0 and 102.
- Move the joystick all the way right, all the way
- left, all the way up, and all the way down a few
- times (sets the range of X and Y axis). Position
- the joystick so the X Axis position is 0, and the Y
- axis position is 102 and it stays there if you do
- not touch it. Click "Next". Without disturbing the
- position of the joystick, click "next" again at the
- "Verify Center Point".
- Follow the rest of the instructions in the Device
- Calibration Wizard, click "Finish" and click
- "Apply". Click "Ok" and exit the Game Controller
- Manager.
-
-
- The last step to fix the trim in Il2 Forgotton
- Battles is to modify the Pitch axis properties
- inside the game.
-
- Run IL2 Forgotton Battles -> Hardware Setup ->
- Input.
- Verify that the "pitch" axis is selected. You may
- notice that even though your joystick is centered,
- the position indicator shows it being above the
- center. This is to be expected due to your recent
- new joystick calibration. It is your new center.
- The problem here is that row of sliders all point to
- the old center, and will cause asymetric influences
- on your new center. To fix this, move all of the
- sliders for the pitch axis up to 100. This
- linearizes the travel of the controller over the
- entire Y axis. Set the filtering to .1 (1 notch
- from the leftmost position) This will soften the
- crispness of all the sliders being at 100. Verify
- that the Dead Band is zero and force feedback switch
- is lit, and click "back" to exit and save your
- changes. You can also do the same to your ailerons
- axis (all 100's and filtering to .1) because
- otherwise when you move the stick diagonally it will
- not move in a true diagonal.
-
-
- Well there now you have it! Now you can go back and
- forth between the hardest turn possible (newbies
- refer to this as "bat turns"), and leveling out
- hands free, within 2-3 seconds of each other, and be
- in complete control 100% of the time! You may
- notice now to fly level your trim on a slider will
- be much farthur back than before. (I made sure to
- leave you a little room to up trim) People who
- aren't aces, who haven't talked to their mechanic,
- they will take like 10 seconds longer to be at max
- trim, and will also take forever to get back.
- Sounds like they will be fighting the stick as much
- as they are fighting you! You will be only a few
- seconds from max trim, and can come out of it with
- much better ease. The funny thing is, you won't
- even be able to tell the difference...until you turn
- at high speeds or make your boom and zoom window
- "double wide". Everything feels great! The only
- minor drawback is that you will never want to fly
- planes that have no elevator trim ever again.

I agree. You are cheating ...call it what you want but, I would rather be shot down by a dozen of you cheaters than ever use such tatics. BnZ is an expliot aces used not changing the FM to have a better turn radius. Why not turn off gravity...? If you are racing F1 and you up your boost you will be disquailfied ...period! What you are doing is wrong ... I can see someone using God mode in a single player game(I have never done this either it takes away from the fun) that is one thing but, you are on-line with people who may have just got the game or people like me who are willing to take our lumps to learn the game. I fly with honor. I have lost all respect I may have had for anyone who thinks this is good for FB or even there own expereince. FOR SHAME!!
