I've read at least fifty of the damn books, but now I can't remember just quite how Bertie fits in...

Algy is a cousin. Ginger is a stray waif. But Bertie? Um..

Bertie was in the fictional 606 squadron with him on the western front in world war one i think

Got a favourite?

Apart from the WWI series (isn't it weird, Biggles was almost effeminate in the early books?) I'd have to nominate Biggles flies West. Pirates!

He didn't fit in, polishing his bally monocle all the time and acting the goose..

But was he a friend? Or related? He must have been, otherwise how was he tollerated?

Biggles flies East.

Sorry I can't see beyond 'The Camels are Coming'. Seems to be a lot more reality in the first ones.

Dunno about Bertie, did he appear inter-war?, but does anyone remember that post-WW2 one where Biggles got to fly a Hunter? Are am I just imagining that I read that once?
