One thing that I have noticed is that when the AI is shooting at you and then they critically damage you they stop shooting at you. Now of course if they shred your wing off its obvious that your going down, but say when they hit you and you catch on fire then disengage you almost automatically know that your going to explode. Is there any chance this will be fixed in BoB?

I've been playing this game for four years; the two planes I lit on fire I stopped shooting at immediately. Seems silly to keep pumping ammo into a plane that is going down. Seems like pretty good AI behavior to me.

Funny I must be AI as I do the same thing....A burning plane is doomed. Why waste ammo on something dead just because it hasn't realized it yet...Kinda like shooting at a chicken running around with its head chopped off. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You must be a masochist. Try something in the CFS series ... CFS-2 is especially merciless -- torch the enemies and they'll still chase you down.

On a related note, I'd like to see a sim where the AI automatically gets a 5-10% top speed disadvantage just to level the playing field in offline missions. At least this should be considered for the 'rookie' and 'average' AI pilots. The IL-2 AI is fairer than most other sims, but it still has 'perfect' piloting abilities and isn't affected by blackouts, overheating, etc.

You know that you're doomed anyway because in IL2 every burning plane without fire extinguishers will explode.
Ever.
Period.
Eternal.

I would bet that when the AI lites up another A/C, the code says/knows you are going down and the attacking AI disengages and looks for another target.

I`ve seen this AI disengage thing. It doesn`t know you`re going to explode as far as I can tell, but it knows if you`ve been pilot killed. It shouldn`t know, but it does. There should be a simple program telling it to keep firing until the plane visually breaks or after a percentage period when the player plane fails to react. No idea how difficult that might be to code.

Although, conversely, I`ve seen enemy AI chase down both me and AI when on fire.

lol...I was playing White Sun Blue Sky and I picked off a George in my trusty Hawk. As soon as I saw his engine catch on fire I went on my merry way to catch up to the bombers I was escorting. About two minutes later bullets start whizzing by my windshield. I did a little roll and checked my six and there was the George...still on fire and blazing away...get it? Blazing away! HAR!

Then he exploded.

Stubborn little cuss...

That's good but tell my wingman that if I break engagement because it is going down in flames he shoots it down and I don't get the kill????

What really is a pity is the AI's ability to c in cloud cover.

They can go the speed of light in cloud cover? Now that's quite t3h h4xx0r right there.

I hope Oleg corrects it in 4.09.

Dead is dead......AI I can do little about, live carping kills is simply pathetic as they have you waste all your ammo, then naturally do little to cover you...

Yet, what goes around comes around and having an Elephant memory can cost those later dearly. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I've always found the AI to be good and bad at the same time. There have been countless times where I have been in a good dogfight, AI performing nice manuvers, employing correct tactics as well as myself then all of a sudden Super AI shows up and spoils the whole thing. Doing things like turning a full 360 degrees without banking only using rudder, being in a much lighter less powerful a/c and staying with your much more powerful heavier a/c in a dive then banking and cranking like an F-16 at speeds that would rip its wings off, blowing various control surfaces off and still getting out manuvered ect. I only hope that in BoB all the good characteristics are kept and the bad ones will be fixed, its a little too late for this sim but here's hoping for the next one.
