View Full Version : Online play with ADSL. Will I be okay?

So tomorrow I up stumps and move back into Melbourne town http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. My Estate agent put his hand on his heart and swore that my new 23rd storey appartment is rigged for cable. Turns out he lied http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif. It only can have ADSL. Grrr. God rot his nob off.

I'm going to get a new connection sorted this week and I'm a bit worried about flying online. At the moment I can get a 250-260 ping on Z vs W server (my favourite) but I'd hate to have it get worse. So I'm wondering, will ADSL be okay for online play? As I understand it, its the upload speed that I need to be aware of. Is 128kbs up enough?

If you fly over the phone and can spare some advice I'd be greatful for any assistance.

Now, wheres that packing tape?

Don't worry mate. I have ADSL and most of my pings are fine, but I have trouble getting onto UK Ded I think, ping is usually over 400. Besides that, you're fine http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

512K/128K ADSL here.I don`t play against ppl from countries with crappy ISPs.Most of them europeean servers with 70-120ping and US servers with 90-260ping.Provided the host knows his hardware all games are smooth though ghost planes happen very often.

Australian gamers have usually high ping,it`s normal.Anything below 400 is ok in most cases.

I recently moved from Melbourne to Canberra and I'm finding that my pings are largely unchanged after moving from Cable to 256/64 aDSL. Don't sweat it, you'll be fine.

P.S. upload is much more important for server than for client. As long as you're not trying to HOST 30 players on that connection it wont notice the load.

Did you get it in writing? cause here in the States, I'd have parleyd that "lie" into free cable for the entire duration of my lease...if the agent valued his license...of course...those lisences are issued from my office, so I have a little more pull....but the threat should work.

Hmm, in the UK ADSL upload speeds are faster than cable (256k versus 128k). But anyway, generally the most important is your download speed. 128k up sould be adequate.

Upload speed is only more important if you are hosting. The more upload speed the more players you can host. You can host a 4-6 player game on 56k dialup so you should be fine.

No worries m8
I'm on ADSL 1600/512, most of the time wireless.
Ping on UK-dedicated is sometimes only 19.
Average ping on most other servers is around 100 to 160.

Phew! Thanks everyone for your replies. Its a relief to know I won't be out of action for too long then. It bites that I have to pay a severnce fee to break my existing contract and then pay for adsl installation on top of that (didn't get it in writing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif) appart from that the new place is great, if a little high up. The first night I kept having rotten nightmares. I thought if I rolled over in my sleep I was going to plummet 80m to my death http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif. I was suprised at myself. I didn't know that heights bothered me.
S'okay now though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif.

See you all in "two weeks"
