Hi to every body.

I have bought IL2 (non FB) 2 weeks ago, and i'm in need of help, because i'm getting very frustrated here...

I would like to know:

a) TAKE OFF: why my plane (no matter what model or type) takes off slower than any other on the game... I read the manual and use everything... flaps at take off position, throtle at maximun, no hard take of (angle 10-15 degrees so i can go up faster without loosing airspeed)/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

b) STRIGHT CROSSING: after a stright crossimg, my enemies makes very closed turns at high speed without stalling, if i try someting like that, I'll finish ALLWAYS on a stall and crash... i mean i.e. i got an enemy at my 12, manage to make a turn o slow down so he passes me by... as soon as i pull back my cloche, using gently my rudder to turn as closed as i can without stalling, i see he has alredy turned 180 degrees, taken speed and is firing at me!! how could he do that in 2 sec? there are twaking for physics in this game?/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

c) IMMELMANN: when I'm chasing an enemy he tries a immelman, and succeed even if his speed is lower than mine (after a top-down yoyo i.e.). If I try the same maneuvre, (even with speed higher than my chaser) my plane will stall no matter what once I get on top of the turn.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

d) FIRING: I get my enemy on target at 19mts. or less, both climbing, so I fire at top of him (gravity, speed of the bullets all in count) in fact, I see parts of his plane blowing out... even after many centres he keeps flying, and even if he's plane is damaged and in disvantage, I see his plane doing impossible movements in the air an a sec after is behind me:three shots and I'm history... how is that possible? (it happened even when both of us flyed the same plane!!!)/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

e) VULCHERING: I hate ppl who do that... I understand if his flying a IL-2 a Stuka or any other ground attack plane... but with a fighter they should wait for me on air to shot me down... there's no fun or honour on Vulchering from a fighter./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

f) HEIGHT: if I'm high and se an enemy who's flying low, he climbs at an incredible speed and i loss my advantage (ok tactics) but if i try to do the same (at same height distance) my plane will stall without reac him./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

And there are many other cases (planes that moves away in a flash 20mts or more from my target just when I start firing, etc.) I know that i might suck as a pilot, or fly the wrong planes, or join the wrong games where "Ases" are waiting noobs like me to shoot down. But the fact is that all the things mentioned above are weird, and frustrating...
There is anything I can try before I drop my copy of IL2 away? If there are tweakings for planes i would like to know them. If my enemies uses them i'll too./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Sorry for this long post but I needed to share this feelings, and i guess that i'm not the only one with this problem./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

What plane are you trying to fly? If you picked the wrong one and are sticking with it everytime it could be something simple like it's a piece of crap plane.

Hello and Welcome!!!

- here...
-

Don`t be frustrated mate, IL2 is rather complex sim and takes some serious practice...if someone says otherwise they are lying /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

- I would like to know:
-
- a) TAKE OFF: why my plane (no matter what model or
- type) takes off slower than any other on the game...
- I read the manual and use everything... flaps at
- take off position, throtle at maximun, no hard take
- of (angle 10-15 degrees so i can go up faster
- without loosing airspeed)/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

That is something hard to judge... what plane are you flying and what plane "others" flew? Different planes means different acceleration, different take off speed...etc. Personally i don`t use flaps on take off, even in fully loaded plane. Just a matter of practice.

- b) STRIGHT CROSSING: after a stright crossimg, my
- enemies makes very closed turns at high speed
- without stalling, if i try someting like that, I'll
- finish ALLWAYS on a stall and crash... i mean i.e. i

- i can without stalling, i see he has alredy turned
- 180 degrees, taken speed and is firing at me!! how
- could he do that in 2 sec? there are twaking for
- physics in this game?/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

You mean Scissors? More likely your opponent is dropping combat flaps, if not landing flaps and lowering a throttle. Try using flaps on combat in the slow dogfights i guess, not really my stile tho, i`d go up and come back with speed and altitude advantage.

- c) IMMELMANN: when I'm chasing an enemy he tries a
- immelman, and succeed even if his speed is lower
- than mine (after a top-down yoyo i.e.). If I try the
- same maneuvre, (even with speed higher than my
- chaser) my plane will stall no matter what once I
- get on top of the turn.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
-

That`s simple.. 1) you might wanna look at your joystick settings 2)go easy on the stick 3) Once again it`s more likely a throttle+flaps combination on opponents side.

- d) FIRING: I get my enemy on target at 19mts. or
- less, both climbing, so I fire at top of him
- (gravity, speed of the bullets all in count) in
- fact, I see parts of his plane blowing out... even
- after many centres he keeps flying, and even if he's
- plane is damaged and in disvantage, I see his plane
- doing impossible movements in the air an a sec after
- is behind me:three shots and I'm history... how is
- that possible? (it happened even when both of us

-

That`s what we call lag. Connection related anomalies. Are you on cable or dialup?

- e) VULCHERING: I hate ppl who do that... I
- understand if his flying a IL-2 a Stuka or any other
- ground attack plane... but with a fighter they
- should wait for me on air to shot me down... there's
- no fun or honour on Vulchering from a fighter./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Vulching is a part of the game, i hate it too, but it doesn`t ruin it for me. Simply start from further base or if server has one base per country leave and find one that has multiple bases.

-
- f) HEIGHT: if I'm high and se an enemy who's flying
- low, he climbs at an incredible speed and i loss my
- advantage (ok tactics) but if i try to do the same
- (at same height distance) my plane will stall
- without reac him./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
-

Two things...either lag again, or simply he was going in incredible speed and probably was in G6/AS /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

- And there are many other cases (planes that moves
- away in a flash 20mts or more from my target just
- when I start firing, etc.) I know that i might suck
- as a pilot, or fly the wrong planes, or join the
- wrong games where "Ases" are waiting noobs like me

What`s your connection anyways, alot of things that you mentioned sound like lag to me.

Really? Then why does nearly everyone fly a LA on the online circuit?

XyZspineZyX

one word:

Practice.
But keep in mind that no LW fighter is good in Turn Fights, use the higher speed or service celling to attack from above, after you passed him climb again, and make the next run but be careful if the plane of your enemy climbs better than your's you'll have a problem.

@Speed try to close the radiators (they take away about 100km/h if open (happens pretty fast on 109er's e.g))

If your fighter is good in Turn&Burn than stay at your best manouvering speed so you can outturn your enemy.

besides that, the only thing that will help (in a short time) is practicing with an experienced pilot.
(i've got vacations so i'm free, but i'm not that good)

a) If you are comparing yourself against the AI, stop doing so. The AI essentially has to cheat for it to work at all. So AI planes, regardless of type, perform slightly differently. This really isn't much of an advantage for them because they aren't terribly bright anyways (everyones computer is as smart as a housefly anyways http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif). If you are comparing yourself against people online there's a few things to take into account. Some planes (pretty much the Bf 109) has manual prop control. That gives you some help if you fly one of those. Others climb faster...in general flaps in the takeoff position tend to help you get off. I tend to go to combat flaps about 5 seconds after liftoff and no flaps after about 20 seconds. Other guys have different combos but I find that gives me better acceleration and climb with my prefered planes.

b) Adjust the sensitivity on your joystick is always the first thing. The second thing is that you have to have a light hand on the stick anyways. If you pull full back, you're likely to stall out. Most of those tight turns are made using light pressure on the stick. Remember that some planes turn better than others (La's and Yaks are turn fighters). Other planes like most of the German ones have much better altitude performance and are better in straight away manuvers. Try circling up above a fight and dropping in for a few moments of gunfire and then climbing back up. It takes practice with both types of combat styles. Always remember that VVS (Russian) aircraft were designed for low altitude performance while Luftwaffe fighters were nearly always better at high altitude. Try meeting the enemy at your disadvantage and you have a tougher fight.

c) Again, that has MUCH to do with your plane and your control abilities. Trust me, my first times out I tended to pull back on the stick and stall alot. You cannot simply pull back and expect it to work. Lots of fine tuning your control abilities and you will do better.

d) Remember that there is a random pattern to the way that the bullets spread. Sometimes you will get a near instant kill...other times you'll be peppering him for ages. Try and focus firepower on weak points on the aircraft...remember that FB does not use a hitpoint system like older games...its a more physics based calculation on penentration, blast, and weight of the bullet. Hit somone consecutively in the same location with a solid burst of fire and he will probably go down (the plane type again matters massively).

e) Vulchering is a hotly debated topic. However...having been the victim on some servers I know what it is like to be vulched. On the servers that I fly on that allow it, there are more than one airfield to take off at. Generally taking off from one not under attack to clear the air over the one that is is a smart move, one that few pilots seem to consider. On a straight up dogfight server, I agree that vulchering is a less honorable tactic. Best to wait for them to get airborne. On a war scenario based dogfight server, I find it a legitimate tactic, you can supress your enemy air defenses by hitting them at the source. Tactics plays into it...get some guys from the other airbase to run CAP around or over your base. Its not a one on one game usually....use your TEAM.

f) Mostly perception based (he always looks better than you do - I feel it sometimes too - having flown their planes as well I know that its not really based squarely in reality). It seems like he has incredible climb...its usually about the same as you. Some planes again are better. Some 109's with manual prop control are better, Yak's and La's tend to do well as do the P39's under 4000 meters.

Now the zipping away really quickly is lag or "warping". If you're on a 56k modem, its much worse.

I only started online about 6 months ago but I had played IL2 since it came out so my flying skills wern't too bad,, and boy did I need em. Got hammered to begin with, but if you learn to fly (any plane, the skill is transferable) and use your head you will start to realise how very good FB online is. You will get there in the end. Having said that it sounds as if you suffer from lag quite a lot, which will not help! It's worth making ping a very big priority when chosing which game to join. I only run on an 56k

Until you put alot of this advice to memory or better yet, practice, you might consider creating your on server to practice on. If you don't want any company, password protect it. If you can work out a time for someone to join you on your server to give you some pointers, that helps. Some one did this for me when I started this sim, helped me out tremendously. I am central time zone in U.S. PM me if I could help out. Some one took time to do that for me, I'll be glad to do the same for you. S!

Ditto here to. I'm in Pacific Time Zone. PM me and we will find a time to fly together.
Many people have given me their time and knowedge and I would be happy to re-pay that by helping you.

I'm not the best pilot by a long shot, nor am I the best shooter, but I would be willing to go online with you and help you all I can. Even if that help is just being a good target for you /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
I would be happy to host if that would help.

Whatever you decide, don't give it up. At some time it will all come together for you. It might be next week or next month or next spring but it will come. And you will have SUCH a feeling of accomplishment.

Hey guys, I bought IL-2 FB the first day it came out.

As a gamer, I contain a very short attention span. And the learning curve for this game isn't built for short-attention spanners as I, but regardless--i keep coming back for more. More *** beating, really, but regardless--I am adamant to learn! I whimper at the thought of showing my stupid head online--so i primarily practice on SP, killing vunerable bombers on that QUICK MISSION BUILDER mode.

I suck, I know next to nothing about flight simulator--the closest thing was MechWarrior--on the PSX!
I'm a hardcore gamer, but I dabble primirily on mmorpgs,fps,strategies--etc.

And like Jagged Alliance 2, regardless of all the heap of games i have in my library--I keep coming back for more of this.

That in mind.

JOYSTICKS: When I bought this game, i bought the cheapest Joystick as well--a WINGMAN ATTACK 2. I'm looking out for a new joystick in the price range of 100 bucks.

LINGOES: HEDGE--this is the only concern for me right now on SP. How do I read hedges?

B&Z attacks: I know nothing about the aerial theater on WW2. But I love the 109 series. Must be the German on me. And I hear they're great on this bandz maneuver--and that really appeals to my style of combat. Like some Hawk, eyeing out prey in the distances below me--with one vital swoop, etc. HOW THE HELL DO I DO IT?! You folks have any great TRACKS showing the ropes to a GREEN like me?

Looking around: I need a joystick that has HOTAS, or something. Cuz using my RIGHT HAND on the stick--while my Left on the MOUSE--to look around, can be very disorientating, I try to use the NUMPADs--but they seem to be a bit slow. I wanna get off this training-wheels of a VIEWER (the FIRST PERSON VIEWER) and finally play the game on COCKPIT (like a true man)--but LOOKING AROUND, the vital points in survival, IS A PAIN!

That's about what I got right now--the landing and taking off seems to be pretty easy for me, even on a 109--go figure. And the shooting--well, i'll ask that next, once i get the whole B&Z attack thing going. BTW, what does B&Z stand for? Yes, I oughtta read that advance PDF manual on the cd, cuz the manual isn'tr eally helpful, but i'm too lazy, and to eager.

thanks in advance.

Not sure if Im understanding you right, but if you go into your IL2:FB directory with Windows Explorer or something, you will find a folder called 'Samples', in there, there is another folder, called 'Speech', in the speech folder, are several others, (RU, HU, FI, DE and US).
Make a backup copy of your Russian, Finnish, German (DE) and Hungarian folders, then simply make a copy of the US folder, rename it to RU, HU, FI or DE and viola, all radio transmissions and instructions in-game are in English.
Of course this works the other way round too.....you want your Russian pilots to speak Hungarian? or Finnish? Same process, just use whatever available language you prefer.

Not at all sure that is what you mean by 'hedge', but hope it helps anyways, certainly made flying the differant campaigns a lot easier for me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
It does kinda kill the immersion when the FW190 or Bf-109 beside you says something in an American accent, but at least it makes sense.

Many many Thanks for your attention and patience on me./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif It's really helpfull to know that I'm in a comunity that supports it's components so well. I read every single line you have posted, and now that there were so many explanations for my doubts, I can take off again and try to make some kill even if it cost me being blown out ten times.
I was thinking that all of that was my errors (and in fact part of it is, and the rest are Lags).

Someone suggested to make my ouwn server, but I only have IL-2 (not FB, the first one) and saw that there's only a dedicated server for FB on the official website. I would like to host games. My connection is an 256 ADSL 24/24, and it usually runs at 32 or 36 kb/s when downloading so I don't think that lags can be related to my connection.

Regarding the planes I fly, I like the most the FB109, but also La-GG3, La-GG5,and Yak9. Someone suggested to close radiators to gain in speed. How do I do that? It looks like being autamatic on the FB109.

My Joystick is MS Sidewinder USB, with throttle and eight buttons, and I'm very comfortable with it. The thing I don't know is how to set sensibility in the game (no advanced controls tab)

I know this sim is difficult and that it takes so much time to fly decently, and tht's why i love it. Because it really gives me the sensation of being on a WWII airbattle. The immersion sensation is great.

I promise i'll keep trying and practicing. I think that the sim and it's comunity largely worth the effort.

Thank you All again, and Regards.

Mesh, close the radiator by toggling the 'R' key. If you are just starting you'd do well to play a few offline missions just so that you know the keys well before going online. You have read the manual 10 times over I trust?!

You'll have your *** handed to you for a good long while no doubt about it but its all the swweter when you get the kills /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

trt setting your fuel to 25% can make your plan a lot faster

try gun settings at 250m and start shooting at 300m

Hey, m8, just keep trying. BTW some of the things you describe def seems like lag, ( it hasn´t to be your own connection). Besides all the other tips this might be of use if u r new to online... http://webpages.charter.net/Stick_Fiend/FYLindex.htm

I never fly the FW190 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I don't like it's cockpit visibility. I like the BF109 !!

k I'll answer regardless of what have been posted yet...

Meshsmoother wrote:
- a) TAKE OFF: why my plane (no matter what model or
- type) takes off slower than any other on the game...
- I read the manual and use everything... flaps at
- take off position, throtle at maximun, no hard take
- of (angle 10-15 degrees so i can go up faster
- without loosing airspeed)

Before starting your climb, make sure your radiator is closed (it's closed by default on russian planes, and it's on auto on the 109, so you'll have to press R once on the 109 to set it to closed (with CEM activated).

- b) STRIGHT CROSSING: after a stright crossimg, my
- enemies makes very closed turns at high speed
- without stalling, if i try someting like that, I'll
- finish ALLWAYS on a stall and crash... i mean i.e. i
- got an enemy at my 12, manage to make a turn o slow
- down so he passes me by... as soon as i pull back my
- cloche, using gently my rudder to turn as closed as
- i can without stalling, i see he has alredy turned
- 180 degrees, taken speed and is firing at me!! how
- could he do that in 2 sec? there are twaking for
- physics in this game?

Some people are very good and can turn incredibly tight. Mostly you should turn or not depending on the ennemy's plane. If you are in a german plane, you can as well forget it, and try to do an immelman or something else instead. If it's a russian plane, you can start turning before the merge for instance. If you are at high speed (more than optimal turn speed) going vertical is a better option since you'll trade that speed for more manoeuvrability, and retain energy since you'll gain some altitude.

- c) IMMELMANN: when I'm chasing an enemy he tries a
- immelman, and succeed even if his speed is lower
- than mine (after a top-down yoyo i.e.). If I try the
- same maneuvre, (even with speed higher than my
- chaser) my plane will stall no matter what once I
- get on top of the turn...

It probably has to do with training, and the radiator drag shouldn't help so try to keep it closed. Maybe have something to do with engine management and achieving extra power. Some people are very good at it, and I find it very hard to keep up with my limited knowledge of how it works (I barely switch to 100% pitch on the 190 instead of auto and that's it)

(it happened even when both of us
- flyed the same plane!!!)

er... yes there are some odd things. Sometimes lag may play a role. You think the plane is going straight while the guy started to turn or something. Hitting a plane from behind is harder than from other aspect, where there is more chances to touch some vital parts of the plane (engine, pilot, radiator...).

- e) VULCHERING: I hate ppl who do that... I
- understand if his flying a IL-2 a Stuka or any other
- ground attack plane... but with a fighter they
- should wait for me on air to shot me down... there's
- no fun or honour on Vulchering from a fighter.

Well it depends of the people. Some rooms specifically allow vulching and I'm fine with this. Try to find a room that doesn't allow it.

- f) HEIGHT: if I'm high and se an enemy who's flying
- low, he climbs at an incredible speed and i loss my
- advantage (ok tactics) but if i try to do the same
- (at same height distance) my plane will stall
- without reac him.

Try to fly as fast as possible. If you're high and fast, you're not very likely to be caught. However if you fly withuot discipline it may happen. It's very easy to loose some speed or alt in some manoeuver if you don't watch it. Also try to keep the ball centered (there's that ball on the artificial horizon of planes, to center it put rudder in the direction where the ball goes. It's an indicator of the plane "sliding" in one direction, which slows it quite a bit). 190s are usually centered almost naturally, but 109s tend to have the ball go wild).

- And there are many other cases (planes that moves
- away in a flash 20mts or more from my target just
- when I start firing, etc.) I know that i might suck
- as a pilot, or fly the wrong planes, or join the
- wrong games where "Ases" are waiting noobs like me
- to shoot down. But the fact is that all the things
- mentioned above are weird, and frustrating...
- There is anything I can try before I drop my copy of
- IL2 away? If there are tweakings for planes i would
- like to know them. If my enemies uses them i'll
- too.

Planes that warp are used to lag, connexion. Either yours or the opponents. Try to go on smooth servers, or servers with fewer people. Also some used to cheat by "blocking" their internet connexion to make their computer lag with some sort of program. I really think I had seen some of those people once in a while, because some happened to warp ONLY when I was on their six or something. I haven't seen it recently, as many rooms boot people who lag too much.

- Sorry for this long post but I needed to share this
- feelings, and i guess that i'm not the only one with
- this problem.

I should add that you have to take a plane that goes with your style of flying. Some are very patient and like to bounce planes and then go away, some others like to turnfight. Try to do what you like best.

Also some "easy settings" like external views and so on can really make life very hard for a new pilot. I personally found full real easier (with padlock and maybe friendly icons to make it more user friendly), because you could actually sneak on people and get some kills that way /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You know, it would be really nice if there was a drop-in training server where people could show new people moves. Joining a squad fulfils the same pupose but something requiring less long-term commitment would be cool.

Umm,you arent joining non-cockpit view servers but still flying cockpit are you?
And if youre flying the bf109 you should be choosing the mk108 armament. The 109 has an advantage in climb, but its not that great of an advantage vs La5fn or Yak3.
Some people may also be using "trim on a slider" which can make the plane turn exceptionally tight without losing much speed/energy-- after a headon merge you could continue straight, but they can reverse direction and then start gaining on you almost immediately. The La5fn is also uneffected by overheat, even though the warning does appear.

It's all about Practice, Meshsmoother, and downing them on the first pass or asap. I like to use B&Z fighters with B&Z tactics, I try not to turn and burn.

Il-2 actually has a decent flight model. It is more fun because if you don't have minimal skills (YOU) then your easy to shoot down. My advice would be to buy Forgotten Battles it's a stand alone patch that comes in a box just like a regular game does. It has an easier Flight Model and there are a lot of people that have no skills but prefer it over IL-2 because you can fly without skill.

Well I never used T O S ,because it seemed to me it was an unrealistic game exploit. But from what I've seen you just have to map your elevator trim control to a slider on your controller.
You could try the search option to find more in depth explainations.Maybe the ace of aces RayBanJockey will show up and be able to tutor you too.

Hi Boosher /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

All your posts and that link to the "Online Dogfight Manual" (which is just great by the way) helped me a lot!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

Yesterday I was able to fly three missions without getting killed!! (take off - out of ammo - landing 3 times and got a kill).

I was also able to cover some of my team mates clearing their six (even without a kill, but causing heavy damage to the enemy, and in any case saving my mate of a sure shot down).

I could do the 360 turn, Splitted S, Immelmann, Closed turns, Yo-Yo High and Low, etc without stalling even if was at the limit of stalling speed.

I really feel that I've done some important improvements in my technique, and it gives me a renewed enjoy feel for IL2...

The boom and zoom technique was the one that gave me better results, so I agree with you 100%. I was flying a La_GG5, 50% fuel, just in case got in the "mix" at low speed, could fly low and make some turns that can't be done on a Bf109.

So I want to Thank You All for all your support and precious advices. This is a Great Comunity, so keep it up /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Huh? Fly FB without skill? I flew IL-2 first and that's where I learned to fly. Then on to FB. Yes some flight models have changed but ..."fly without skill..."?
You mena I've been getting my butt handed to me regularly online by "unskilled" pilots?

Why the very thought......
