My local computer store is selling both the cards below for GBP94. Anyone have an idea which is the best in terms of value for money? The X-fi claims to be optimised for gaming, but I seem to remember the former retailing for twice the price this time last year.

SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Sound Card
Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Music Sound Card

Thanks for any advice,

Martin

Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Music Sound Card works very well for me.

doubt its worth upgrading from an audigy to the X-Fi, otherwise why not go for the X-Fi?

I'm currently using my very old SBlive! value sound card, and will soon be upgrading to an x-fi elite pro.

Now how's that for a leap?

Hello EmKen,

I just ordered a Sound Blaster Audigy ZS Gamer Limited Edition from NewEgg.com (http://www.newegg.com/). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I got it for $123.00 US but also got a $30.00 mail-in-rebate. So $87.00 for a brand new sound card. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I'll let you know how it is as soon as I get it & install it. Hey,"Once You Know,You NewEgg!" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif =S=

I recently went for the X-Fi Fatality after having the Hercules Digifire 7.1 for a number of years, I must admit I did this after a lot of research & much pondering, My main cause for concern is that I am hard of hearing!! & was wondering if I was going to hear much of a difference especially as I was going from the card through to my home stereo (2 speakers)

Well I took the chance & I'll tell you I don't regret doing it, even I can tell the difference with the X-Fi & my set up! I know it's a quite an expensive card, but I understand the X-Fi music is still a good card.

Its up to you though! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Nope, Still using mine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Its the only bit on my (now newish) puter that i did not upgrade.

So, is it really essential to upgrade the sound card ?

Well, I went the whole nine yards and bought the Audigy 2ZS Plantinum. The way I read it, the X-Fi equivalent is about GBP180, about the price this card was until a couple of weeks ago. I have definitely noticed a vast improvement in sound (compared to the onboard AC97 sound previously), but not noticed any improvement in fps during the game. Still experimenting, but I have also installed the 5.13 Catalysts -they have given a huge improvement in visuals (or is this connected to the SB Audigy??!!).
Anyway, Happy New Year to the best forums for us flight simmers, here's hoping for a peaceful and pleasant one.

Helo EmKen,

Well I got my new sound card today. I am very happy with it already. I can definately tell the difference in sound quality over my SB Live 5.1 card. Next thing I will upgrade is my speakers. Right now I have Creative Labs I-Trigue L3500's. Excellent speakers even though they are 2.1's. But now that I have a 7.1 sound card I want 7.1 speakers to get the full effect of the new card. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So now everything in my comp has been upgraded. Was definately worth the $123.00 ($87.00 after mail-in-rebate) I spent for it. Plus I got 5 free games! Anything that comes with free games is money well spent. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif =S=

It got it's own CPU and memory. Lol.
Soon the floppy will need it's own 128MB ram to work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
