Just about to apply and then realised it's a Friday and too short notice to get the day of work. Damn, it's only about 15 miles away.

Over on the east side of Stockport...it's just a short trip over the Snake, could've maybe even got the train to Hope.

I grew up in Stockport, went to Infant and Junior school in Hazel Grove! It's a beautiful drive over the Snake, some of the best scenery in England

Small world. I grew up mostly in Sheffield - Friday nights out in the Derbyshire pubs in the 70's. In Bolton now, still visit Sheffield regularly, usually over the snake and travelling a little too fast ... great road.

Yes, I know Hazel Grove pretty well, living in Bredbury now but grew up in Middleton on the north side.

And I work out near Bolton - although I'm toying with the idea of being unwell on the 16th May. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Been to a few airshows but never seen the Lanc in flight.

Trouble is, the public transport out to Derwent is a bit rubbish. Best chance is to get to Bamford on the train and then a 3 mile hike up to the Ladybower, but I can only get there at 8am or 9:40 (which is a bit too late). No buses from Bamford up to Derwent. I'll have to see.

I was hoping to see the Lancaster at Flying Legends but having checked the website it won't be there http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Good luck getting there, stathem, if you make I'd appreciate some pics!

Ahh the impetulance of youth, You do realise that forsaking the enjoyment of this aircraft you have set a precedent that she will hold against you for the rest of your life http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Very small world, I live in a village next to Bakewell called Great Longstone.

Bradwell is very close, and the Derwent damns are about 12-15 miles.

I'm quite jealous, I miss the beautiful countryside round there. I live near Oxford now and it's just too flat. Maybe one day I'll move back.

Live just down the road from you southerners in Castle Donington, but my heart is where I came from originally and that's the Lake District....

Well, I've put an application in for a pass. My lad has chicken pox and so we have to keep him off nursery all week. He should be almost better by Friday.

If it's no show on the pass, we'll get the train and try to watch them over Bamford.

We still come up to visit quite often...the wife's family still live in Sheffield, and we try to take the kids out to the Peaks whenever we go up. Next time I'm up I'll drop you a PM, see if you fancy a pint!

As for the Lancaster flight, I'm definitely not going now, I've got tickets for Lord's on Saturday http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes, thanks for the original heads up RedToo.

I made it as far as Bamford - it was a mile and a half walk up to a viewing spot from the station - a long way for 3 year old legs. (too late for a car park pass)

617's Tornados came over first, couldn't get a decent shot of them.

The Lanc made only one pass over Bamford;

It was a bit difficult to get decent pictures and amuse this fella

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/griffnav/Gallery/100_2036.jpg

whilst at the side of a busy A-Road for half an hour.

Tony's PRXIX and the Hurricane made a couple of passes through the Derwent valley
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/griffnav/Gallery/100_2038.jpg

The Dakota came over a couple of times too

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/griffnav/Gallery/100_2039.jpg

Shortly after I had to leave - Max's patience had run out.

Full res pic of the Lanc. (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/griffnav/Gallery/100_2035.JPG)

It was well worth the trip though, it's real beauty.

If you have an account on PPRuNe there are some pics on this (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=327008&page=2) thread. I'll stick one on the bottom of this post but it's not mine!

Someone had also posted this poem, which I'd never read before and is just beautiful.

Lest we forget!

Lie in the dark and listen.
It's clear tonight so they're flying high,
Hundreds of them, thousands perhaps,
Riding the icy, moonlit sky.
Men, machinery, bombs and maps,
Altimeters and guns and charts,
Coffee, sandwiches, fleece-lined boots,
Bones and muscles and minds and hearts,
English saplings with English roots
Deep in the earth they've left below.
Lie in the dark and let them go;
Theirs is a world we'll never know.
Lie in the dark and listen.

Lie in the dark and listen.
They're going over in waves and waves,
High above villages, hills and streams,
Country churches and little graves
And little citizen's worried dreams;
Very soon they'll have reached the sea.
And far below them will lie the bays
And cliffs and sands where they used to be.
Taken for summer holidays.
Lie in the dark and let them go.
Deep in the earth they've left below.
Lie in the dark and let them go;
Theirs is a world we'll never know.
Lie in the dark and listen.

City magnates and steel contractors,
Factory workers and politicians.
Soft hysterical little actors,
Ballet dancers, reserved musicians,
Safe in your warm civilian beds.
Count your profits and count your sheep,
Life is passing above your heads,
Just turn over and try to sleep.
Lie in the dark and let them go;
There's one debt you'll forever owe,
Deep in the earth they've left below.
Lie in the dark and let them go;
Theirs is a world we'll never know.
Lie in the dark and listen.
