View Full Version : Question for you veterans

Do you actually go where the mission tells you or do you go to your own hunting grounds?

I use SH3 Commander so I change my patrol area if I don't like what I have been assigned but I do always go there and horse around for 24 hours.

I mainly change my patrol area if it requires a long travel time. For SH4 I really hope they improve the time compression capabilities of the game.

If you go somewhere else other than what BDU wants you to and sink something does it still count?

Yes you get credit no matter where you sink a ship. In fact I rarely sink a ship in my assigned patrol area.

It's worth going to your patrol area because you get renown for reaching your patrol area and for staying there 24 hours.

100 for reaching and 500 for staying 24 hours? I don't know if those figures are correct but I do know it is worth doing.

I will always go to my assigned grid and complete my patrol (this is my duty as a sworn Kriegsmarine Officer)- rarely will I encounter the enemy there. Enroute I will make certain to patrol grids with known heavy traffic such as bf15. There has been one instance where the Bdu sent me to grid gf92 from Brest and there was no way I could get there and back with my fuel supply. If I have ample fuel I will divert either going or coming to expend my load of torpedoes on that pesky allied merchant shipping. I never come home with torps left!

I have some interesting twists written on slips of paper in a bowl into which I cannot see. They contain such additional orders as "especially target RN escorts/ tankers/ ships carrying planes & tanks", "sink all fishing boats at grid XX00, they are suspected of carrying enemy spies" & such things. Later in the war with acoustics and a modded boat the order to "Hunt Carrier Task Forces" come into play. That one is particulary interesting and dangerous for my Boat, as I play DiD.

However, I always go to my assigned grid, often shaking my head at the "armchair idiots" at BDU that assign the parol zones. It is my sworn duty too, as a Kreigsmarine Officer, to carry out such orders...

Them after the 24hrs I am a free agent.

I always go to my assigned patrol.

However, last patrol (May 1944) they tried to assign me to AM66. Go look that up on the map.

So I modded the game so that it would be BE25 and reloaded the just before getting home save from my previous patrol.

I play DiD so this is cheating http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif a little bit but seriously, ITS 1944!!!! A M66 in 1944!!!

I don't think that is a historic order. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

well.. it depends. if i have a type II or type VII then i usually go to my assigned grid.. but the type IX.. thats another story http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Seems like this is a good thread to ask this question: have any of you done a patrol in the Indian or Pacifc?

I know those areas aren't assigned, even though historically the U-boats operated in the Indian Ocean for a time.

I have RuB and SH Commander, and joined the 12th Flotilla, with the IXD2 (that thing has HUGE range) and was tempted to test out the hunting in the Indian Ocean. So, has anyone been out there and can report if much activity goes on? And if so, where are the hotspots?

Seems like it would be kinda cool, without all the pesky Allied air patrols. At least for role-playing purposes it would be neat.

Here is an online manual, you can read about all matters, including renown points:

I always go to my assigned patrol zone, like a dutiful Kaleun. However, I have been known from time to time to request certain particular zone assignments for my Type IXB (via SH3 Commander) and, since I have finally out-paced Kretschmer as the U-bootwaffe's leading ace, Onkel Karl usually obliges my requests http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For this latest patrol, since I was departing in mid December 1941, I managed to wrangle myself a plum assignment off the Florida coast for the opening of Operation Drumbeat http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif.

Since using GW 1.0 for my last couple of patrols, I have also started getting occasional radio messages from BdU during my patrols requesting that, if possible, I patrol some particular new zone. Although I assume that these are just randomly generated messages for immersion purposes, for the fun of it on my last patrol I decided to head for one of those zones that was within reach and actually stumbled on and sank a couple of lone freighters in that grid square, so now I always head off to honor those requests from BdU if it's at all possible.

The only time I haven't patrolled in my assigned grid for at least 24 hours are the handful of occasions where I encountered so much traffic en route to the patrol zone that I shot all my torpedoes. No point continuing on empty...
