View Full Version : 37mm downgraded?

Yesterday I flew online in a P39. I suddenly found a slow moving TB3 and approached it head-on. I fired a single shot, which hit the right outboard engine. In the past, this would have sheared the wing off, sending the TB3 spiralling into the ground. However, this time it simply exploded, allowing the TB3 to fly on, almost unharmed. Has the 37mm been downgraded? Still, the P39 is probably my favourite aircraft in-game (I used to hate it in IL2, pre-FB, when it just kept spinning and bouncing on landing)- its fast, powerful and really quite easy and fun to fly.

To be able to fare well,
To avoid the frustration of misfortune,
That, in this world, is happiness.

Hmm, I experience some pretty cool explosions on my adversaries with the P-39 v1.1b...

measure ye mete, it shall be
measured to you again.

Maybe it depends where and what the 37mm hits...

I have to disagree with the idea that the 37mm cannons have had their capacity for harm reduced post patch.

I have slammed 3 37mm shells into a fighter before (dora) it went down and I have the screenshots to prove it.

It depends on where the shell strikes.

I flew it for two years and I rarely spun r stalled the bird. The fact is, in 1.1b the 37mm is much stronger. And you have to know it's an AP shell, it will make a huge hole. The tb3 is a kite so it'll go right through. You have to fire it a few times down an imaginary line in the wing to cut it off.

Exactly.

Against the TB3 I nearly allways aim for the rudder section as its very easy to hit. If you take that out the fight is over even if he has all his engines.

The P-39 has the worst of the big guns in the sim, but it's still a big gun. It doesn't seem to do as much damage as its Soviet 37mm or even 23mm counterparts, nor nearly as much as the Mk 108. And it's hard to aim with a slow muzzle velocity and jerky recoil, so I never deflection shoot or from much of a distance. I don't believe it uses AP shot any more, however. Previously it used a mix of HE and AP rounds, which of a lot of people complained was not historically accurate in Soviet use. I believe it now uses only HE shot, any one know for sure?

Well I dont know for sure because I have not looked at data or done any number crunching like many do in here.

However I did note one striking thing on close in and medium strikes with the 37mm cannon into their six oclock... The blasts of flame and "shrapnel" were almost destracting and in some cases would obscure the view behind a rapidly expanding puff of orange flame. It does not look or feel like AP to me but I dont really mind as I always fire two shots instead of the single but the puffs of flame can definatly throw you off if you are under pressure from other enemy.

Personly I agree with you. AP would be better as a definate kill is preferable to a graphics card melting set of pyrotechnics any day/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I dunno, I fired two shots into a HE111 and it bascially blew the tail off.
