of my grandfather's brother (my grand-uncle I suppose), crashing his P-51 into the side of a hill near Hamburg, Germany in Nov of 1944. The shots were taken from his wingmans camera.

He was a pilot in the 369th (i think) who was buzzing low alt targets after an escort mission with his wingman. He dove low and antiaircraft fire ripped through his cockpit killing him instantly. The plane continued on it's course hitting just short of the target he was aiming for.

Along with that tape we watched tapes of him dogfighting and such. Very interest and sobering stuff. After flying the virtual warplanes around sometimes you're prespective gets a bit skewed especially for computer jockys like me who have never piloted a plane nor have been involved in the military.

My grand-uncle was a small town kid who lived in Minot, ND. The Air Force recognized his bravery in 1999 when they commisioned a buiding on the Minot AFB after him and his brother who both died within weeks of eachother in ww2.

Just wanted to write it out... Food for thought I guess.

"Oh bliss, bliss and heaven. Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest spun heaven metal, or like silvery wine flowing in a space ship, gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied I knew such lovely pictures."
