View Full Version : I was comparing Spitfires to X-wings, then I thought...

Why not make a Death Star trench run in the full mission builder?

I made a long line of castles to act as the walls of the Death Star. I put a V1 rocket tube at the end for a target, and filled the trench with AA guns.

I decided that there is nothing more suitable for the proton torpedoes than HVAR rockets.

Spitfires can't fire rockets. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

So I decided to use a Corsair.

It's not quite complete yet. Still too short, needs weapon balancing, and is extremely sloppy.

I was thinking about throwing in some Zeros as TIE fighters. I just need to find out how the AI acts at such low altitudes.

Discuss.

Use a Norwegian fjord and some Mosquitos.

and nevermind the V1 launcher

object # 367 in the FMB is a 2m-wide thermal exhaust port

sounds perfect for your use

if not, try object # 581 in the FBD "wombat"...be sure to set skill to "ace"

Seafires can shoot rockets.

Don't be too generous with AAA or you won't even run 100 metres. Il-2 gunners are far better than SW beams. As for the AI Zeros, they will crash right from the start, or try to hover above the course, losing speed. They wouldn't -or shouldn't- catch an all running Corsair, anyway.

And be sure to not use the gunsight. Use the force.

Make is so you have to fly under a couple of bridges too. That's lots a fun.

By the way, the Seafire can be loaded out with rockets.

You should add P-38s to be Y-wings.

If you're looking for something whose ingame performance matches that of a real TIE fighter, I would suggest the I-185.

Just an ill fated attempt with my dry sense of humor...sorry.

Sounds like it will be a blast ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

If you put the AA slightly back from the edge of the "trench", you could get them to only have a 60 degree (or so) angle of fire so they can't track you for miles...

Make it a night map and put some 20mm AAA around the map (has the right color of tracer - blue) to shoot at AI spits. AAA AI can't hit anything after 19:00, BTW, so lots of AAA would be fine.

Great idea! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Sounds like fun, what planes are you going to use the for tie fighters (the zero is manouverable and is fragile, just like the TIE) and the Millenium falcon (beaufighter fast, well armed, big)

The Tempest and the Seafire could work for the tie fighter (the tempest even got 4 cannons, just the the x-wing)

Anyone here remember the x-wing series? (x-wing, TIE fighter, x-wing vs tie fighter)

Can I be darth vader in an me262, flanked by Komets?

i`d also like to say "I have him now!" before I blow the rebel`s ship to pieces.

And, no they`d be no Millenium Falcon type ship cos I would`ve destroyed it in an earlier raid using my darkside powers while it was still sitting in the hanger! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Use a Norwegian fjord and some Mosquitos.

Har. I've never seen the movie or read the book.

As for where I am on planes...

X-Wing= Probably a Seafire

Y-Wing= I don't know. A P38 seems a little too fast

TIE fighter= I was thinking about a Zero, but I've decided that a Russian plane would better fit the TIE's personality

TIE Advanced x1= Not an ME262. The X1 is only 3 Megalights faster than the Xwing. A Star Wars version of an ME262 would have to go around 150 Megalights. The Xwing only goes around 100.

Millenium Falcon= Dunno. I like the Beaufighter idea.

I don't even know if I'll be able to cast the Falcon or Vader. They have very specific roles.

Hmmm sounds like it could make an awsome coop mission! Then you could have people playing as vader and his escorts....

I can't compare realistic airplanes to Star Wars in anyway. I think you have wrong game for Star Wars missions, I suggest playing Star Wars Battlefront II space battles. There you can fly with X-wing, Y-wing and Tie fighters, it is very cool game I have played it a lot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You should use the Bf-109 F as a Tie Fighter. Theres a great skin available on flying legends, complete with solar panels on the wings. Also comes with a tie pilot skin http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

B 25 as the Millenium Falcon! AI gunner tastic!

Cant go wrong with Bf 109 F2 or F4s as TieFighters.

Y-Wings should be Hurricane II's!

Tie Figheter = The Lerche http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif
Y wings = Hurricane (I know it's not 2 man, but it's kinda overshadowed by the Spit, like the Ywing is to the Xwing...)
Millenium Falcon = B25 (it's gotta have turrets whatever it is)

I've got both Battlefront I and II.

And other than the blocky landscape of the Deathstar, I don't see why you can't do Star Wars missions. The Fourth movie is pretty tame when it comes to dogfighting.

The three main differences are gravity, aerodynamics, and technology (such as targeting computers, convergence changing guns and fly-by-wire systems).

Two of those are the environmental changes.

The only things an IL2 aircraft wouldn't do is to make the enemies explode (Which can be done... if you get lucky).

The A-wing and TIE interceptor are overmoddled. Really.

Oddly enough I actually have such a mission already made for a probably not-to-be-completed campaign. PM me an email address if anyone wants it. You fly down a narrow valley lined with buildings and AAA. Your target is a bunker at the base of the cliff face. With rockets it's pretty easy so I recommend you try using guns. I have tried it with the Spit, Typhoon and P=80. P-80 is the most fun.

Strangely enough, I too recently created a mission to re-create the Death Star trench run! Given the interest in this thread, I might just upload it after some further tweaking & adjusting! Here's what mine includes:

I use the map online6islands. The north-south canyon on the east side works well, especially when it's filled with various types of AAA and machine guns. I used F6F's equipped with rockets for the X-Wings and a6m5s for the TIEs. The target is on the tarmac at the end of the canyon.

Originally used P-80 as the X-Wing and Ta-183 as the TIE but the lack of bombs/rockets on most jets made me decide to use props instead.

Oh and stanford-ukded: mission accomplished.

What's curious is the speed in the old Xwing and Tie Fighter games was really, really slow. The final Xwing mission to destroy the exhaust port was actually sped up %300 (they told you they would do this in the mission briefing), and that was the first time in the game I felt the xwing was even somewhat close to the speed of the movies.

What's funny is even at the highest speed possible in those games in space, they don't come close to the slowest speeds of any WW2 fighter in IL2 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ah, so the speed was in km/hr then? 100km/hr IS slow for any spacecraft...

I always though the Comet and Goha would do well for TIE-series crafts, the Salamander could be a reasonable early model X-wing (or perhaps a T-Wing) with an atmospheric engine strapped on.

Only a tad nerdy, off course.
