View Full Version : Any news on the British Voice-pack?

XyZspineZyX

This was announced some time ago at IL2center (R.I.P)

Any news?

I have a feeling British voices could come in handy quite soon.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

If the project has died then I might be prepared to resurrect it.

I could do 2 "actors" - voices any offers for the rest?

Anyone...?

I'm guessing from the lack of interest that this project is dead, never to see the light of day again?

Perhaps it's being taken care of by Maddox? Mind you, with only one RAF plane in FB and none likely in the near future (?), maybe it's not.
Just a thought, not based on anything specific.
Cheers!

Wasn't there one available for Il2? Would it trnsfer across? I think I've got it buried on my hard drive somewhere.

And as for Dunkelgrun's comment about 'only one RAF plane in FB and none likely in the near future....', , we'll jolly well see about that - won't we chaps?

I guess you mean this one:
http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_gd&id=zglhs

The thing is it is English, spoken by Russian and German actors (I'm hoping it will work in FB so that I can finally understand what the VVC and Luftwaffe pilots I fly with are saying).

What we really want is a true British Voice pack:
"Tally ho chaps" and all that....

As I said earlier I'm prepared to record the voices for 2 "actors" but we'd need 6 more "actors".

If there's no news forthcoming of the project started at il2center then does anyone else want to volunteer?

We will indeed, even if I have to whine about it forever! Where`s the Spitfire? It shall NOT be left out!

p.s. I`d volunteer for the Brit voice pack. I reckon my English is good enough for it. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

More than just 6 voices needed I reckon. You've got to have

Received Pronunciation (i.e.posh)
London
Brummie
Northern (Yorkshire or Lancashire)
West Country
Scottish
Welsh
Irish

just for starters, not including a whole host of more local dialects, else people will whine (surely not?).

I'm Estuary English with a touch of Westcountry thrown in for good measure. Any help?

Cheers!

I don't know who is doing it, but I'll chip in with
recording voices if required as I have a fairly decent
digital recording set up.

It would be nice to get some regional variation in
the voices, as not all the fighter pilots in the RAF
in WW2 had plummy what-oh, old bean accents! In fact
for the Battle of Britain some occasional
Polish and Czech accents would be appropriate, plus
a smattering of Yorkshire, Midlands, Canadian, Australian,
Scottish, Welsh, Indian, etc. And I know of one person
with a totally authentic sounding cornish accent :-).
Regional variation would help distinguish which pilot
is which.

There are nine "actors" so thats as many as we need.
The ground controller is done already - we can use the one from the existing US folder - he has a British accent..

I'll do a hammy "Tally ho" officer type and my usual accent which is a mixture of Southern and brummie...

+ 2 volunteers in the posts above.

Any other takers?

If you're serious the instructions are in the readme that came in the box version of the game. Although I can convert audio from whichever format I recieve it in. IIRC there are some "scripts" for all the phrases we need so if a volunteer could record the entire script once (and put some feeling into it chaps /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) then that is one "actor" in the bag.

I'm game.....anyone else?

Ok then...

Anyone willing and able to do it.

Check out the readme file he game (Disc 2 IIRC) this contains the script to read for each phrase spoken...
I reccomend recording in one long chunk and then cutting the phrases out of that to save into the Actor folder.

Obviously the files need to be saved out correctly, I'm sure the readme does go into enough detail to explain how, but if not just open the samples/speech/US/actor1 folder and see what the files are called.

It will probably sound better if you don't use a high quality mic. Don't forget, were trying to emulate 40 year old radio equipment here.

I wonder if this WILL happen....

hope to get the british voicepack soon.

btw. extremOne, you did an good work with your USAAF campagne ,

http://www.bayern.de/Layout/wappen.gif

Bavaria is one of the oldest European states.
It dates back to about 500 A.D., when the Roman Empire was overcome by the onslaught of Germanic tribes. According to a widespread theory, the Bavarian tribe had descended from the Romans who remained in the country, the original Celtic population and the Germanic invaders.

I would want to see a good mix of British accents....People you've forgotten Geordie though

A british voice pack could also be useful for developing a hurricane campaign on the Murmansk map.

When the hurricanes arrived in Russia they were still piloted by RAF personal and flew combat missions in them until VVS pilots could fly them.Sounds an interesting custom campaign?

Thanks to Gurberly we now have an actors voice files (subject to him sending and me receiving them). Apparantly he recorded them for Luthiers original project.

Hey does anyone know how we can get hold of the other files which Luthier could be sitting on?

Or any other volunteers...?

You are forgetting that Britain's dominions served under the British Roundel during WWII so their specific accents would also have to be modeled.

I vote dump the English ground controller voice in the american voice pack, and do a new one.

I like the idea of getting one or two Empire accents - Australian and/or Canadian would be good. Wonder if Tall Canuck would be interested?

I haven't done sound recording on my rig before. If you give me a few days I'll try it out and, I'll help out if I can, and if it would be useful. (modified RP/Northern inflection)

Hi.
Thanks for volunteering. What accent will you be bringing to the party?

There is a text file but it's not as helpful as I 1st thought.

The easiest way I've found:-
Look in the samples/speech folder and copy the US folder anywhere on your hard drive.

Then select which "actor" you'll work on (I'm doing 1 at the moment.)

POST HERE WHICH ONE YOU'RE DOING TO AVOID DUPLICATED EFFORTS.

Each file you need to record is named something explicit. ie one.wav for which you will record yourself saying "one"...

If you follow these steps you'll find it all pretty self explanatory.

Please let us know how you get along

If this British voice pack is going to happen, please dont use the word 'Roger'. That came in post war.Instead use'O.K.'
Also it would be good to somehow include callsigns such as
'Tophat control'
'Pinetree leader'
'Red 1, Red 2, Blue 1, Blue 2 etc.
and authentic phrases such as
'Bandits 3 o'clock high'
'Vector 230 make Angels Fifteen, Buster!' (steer 230, and climb to Fifteen thousand feet, Maximum speed!)

I guess your whole knowledge about Polish airmen comes from movies, like "Battle of Britain" (from 60's)...

On the very day when Kriegsmarine (German Navy) made fool of whole RAF by slipping past British Channel, the Polish 316th SQ was on coastline patrol. They spotted a small group of patrol boats heading to British shores!! The Ground Control responded immediately: "DESTROY THEM!! They're GERMANS!!" But the Polish S/Ldr asked if he could take a closer look. The Ground Control's response: "Destroy them, repeat: destroy them!". But Polish pilot told this officer that the whole responsibility will be on Ground Control, not on Polish flight. The officer hestitated for a moment and gave them permission to take a low pass over the boats.
As the Spit zoomed near the boats, the colourful flares confirmed daily ID code - these were BRITISH boats!!!

Now, WHO is "over-excited" here??? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I support the idea of various English accents. I wonder if this is how Luthier arranged the speech pack.

Oh, BTW: the Polish Speech Pack is coming closer - I need to finish the editing before I'm going to send it to recording studio for post-processing (Janusz is back now)... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I'm gonna see if the wife will do a WAAF traffic controller's voice for me.

Wish me luck!

(she thinks I'm bloody mad for spending so much time on this game anyway - this will just confirm it!)

Just experimented with recording my voice using sound recorder which comes with windows but it does not sound like a radio transmission.Too much bass or something.Voices should sound 'tinny' with a hint of 'crackle'.
What program is best to do this with? Thnx

Sorry people, but I've canned this project.

Too much work and I wasn't at all happy with the results my recording equipment was acheiving.

I'm now using the US voices for RAF pilots.

BBQ's voice pack works very well with FB too.
I recommend replacing the RU and De voices with that.
Get it at http://www.mudmovers.com (under IL2 essential files)
