A decent sound card will/may give better sound quaility than an onboard sound-chip. Or at least sound different.
I use an old Turtle Beach sound card, but have built a few machines using Creative cards.
The Creative sound cards, do sound better...to me.

For the best sound...crank up the sound quality options in il2setup.exe.

You may find this causes a drop in your frame rate. This will require some testing and experimentation.

Have a look at this
http://www.airwarfare.com/tech/soundil2.htm

In the settings box, there is a minimum setting and a maximum setting...try them one at a time.

Example:
Set to maximum (OK and close the panel).
Start il2.
Open the track viewer.
select the BLACK DEATH TRACK (and run it).
Listen closely to the sounds.

EXIT
Set sound to MINIMUM repeat.

It really depends on your hardware.

CAREFULL!

The Article pointed to by the link is for the ORIGINAL IL-2 Sturmovik (1CD) game, although still relevant for FB 1.0+ versions as well.

You might find more recent info in the knowledge base at www.mission4today.com (http://www.mission4today.com) (Link is in the menu on the left).
Like already said: You need to experiment yourself. Sound settings are very subjective to what you "like" and depend heavily on your hardware and system setup. What works for someone else might not work for you.
