Rather then make a new skin from the ground up I figured I could just take the default one and put all my fancy kill markings and such on it then save it as a new skin. Then I'll be the coolest kid in the squadron.

The default ones are hard coded.
Download some custom made ones for a strarting point.
Mission4today.com canons-skins.com cptfarrels.com
are popular sites for such things

You used to be able to change tha default skins, but it doesn't seem possible anymore.

I'm pretty sure this vpmedia Ju88 skin (which is my default skin) isn't the standard one. I changed the name of it to 'default.bmp', this doesn't work now though :-(

That skin might be a new default added in when the Ju88 was made flyable. Wasn't that patch v4.03m?

You may be right. Does anyone else have this skin as default?

See this OLD (2005) link where it distictly mentions skin changes:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/45410763/m/574...741088613#5741088613 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/45410763/m/5741088613?r=5741088613#5741088613)

Almost thought I was losing my mind because I had a distinct memory of changing some skins. Maybe it oly worked/works in campaigns though.

...and this old picture-file I saved of a skin I had renamed 'default' as you can see by the name on top of the file (see also the date it was changed, I don't know if that was before or after the patch mentioned above):

Without changing the default skin, you can get the default skins to edit them.

Simply open up your conf.ini and at the line ClearCache= put the value 0.

Then, go to paintschemes, cache and look for the folder of the aircraft you want. You will see 4 files, the one you want is the one with the extension .tgb.

Rename the file so the extension is .tga, and then use photoshop(or GIMP) to open it. Add a layer with whatever markings you want, then save it as an 8bit bmp. Then place it in the proper aircraft folder and select it. Done.

Default skins were hard-coded to stop cheating.....

Imagne if I make my default skins for say FW190's nothing more then a chartruse 512x512 square, 109's Flourecent pink, and so on....then turn skin download off.....OR.....use a skin, any skin for that plane and add hit boxes in bright colors where the best points to shoot at are....

So the default skins were hard coded to prevent such cheating.....If you run into anyone who can alter the default skins....be suspect of their play.

There is no need for pink 109's as long as this game has F6.

Just find out which one it is and then go into the paintschemes folder for that plane and get it.. you will need some kind of program like Gimp or Photoshop.... Hit the links for M4T/DATA in my sig.. look for skinning tutorials.. Depending on the plane the default may be the only one i there.. and if I am not mistaken when you pick a skin it stays there for that plane.
