Guys, this is my very first Forgotten Battles movie. It has taken me about two weeks to complete, that included flying the tracks, recording them to video from different angles and then editing it all together. It depicts Blenheim Bombers with a Hurricane escort coming up against four BF-109's.
As this is my first attempt, please be kind with your oppinions, but also constructive too, Thanks for taking the time to view this.
You will need the XVID codec to view this film and it is 42mb in size, running for 10 minutes.

By the way if anyone would care to host this movie, please feel free....(just let me know where, thanks)

Excellent vid. The dramatic conclusion with the chase under the bridge for me has to be the best bit.
It's a shame when people fly with no cockpit view because they don't get the eye candy of bullet holes in the canopy or oil smears over it.
Showing these views in the video really adds to the realism of it.
Music is well timed and wraps up the video nicely.
Good work...

PS Who is that fine pilot in the hurri chasing you under the bridge (nudge nudge!) ???

Very NICE!!!!!!!!!!

It was a bit grainy at first then cleared up.

The music was perfect eith it aswell.

But man what a show!

I would like to play that mission!

Tha ominous Hurry at the ten settling on his 6 up close ooh the fear then to see the german walk away and the obvious dimmize of the Hurry pilot made me chuckle.

That was not inteended politiacal at all in above statment. It was the fights attitude that made me chuckle.

Oh do you not know of Shift F1 to toggle the 109 site over?

Please do more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok to record the footage, I used nview control for my Ti4600 Graphics card to output a TV Signal. I then output this straight into my Digital camcorder (which has a record facility)to capture it in DV type 1. I played the tracks back about 60 times and ended up with approx 5 Hours of film footage. I then captured it back into my PC (Digital quality and ended up with approx 15Gb of file footage. This was then edited down (took AGES!!!), to the final version at 2.01 Gb. I test rendered it a couple of times adjusting contrast levels and then did the final render. Now because of a problem with my Editing codecs, a good friend of mine (see Scragbat above), encoded it with the XVID codec, which crunched it down to 42mb. It had to be smaller than 50mb, 'coz, that's all the webspace I have. It took a long time, and I do intend to complete another one in a couple of months time (ideas and suggestions appreciated).

P.S. Thanks go to Scragbat a.k.a 'Lone Squirrel', for his expert flying of the Hurricane in the 'bounce' sequence. Oh the fun we had getting that shot!

Strange you can't play AVI's Hawgdog??
As long as you have installed the XviD codec (link supplied by MysticPuma in original post), it should play OK.
You don't even have to wait for the whole thing to download before you can view it.
With at least Windows Media Player 8 it should stream play.
I'm running XP with all updates too.
Xvid for my money has a better compression/quality ratio than WMV...

Great job for your first one. You got some talent my man!

A bit grainy thru the first 2 or three minutes but did clear up.

The music was time very good with the action.

I agree with everyone else...the final chase clip with the Hurricane was by far...the best part of the movie!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Very well done! Excellent!!

Great job....look forward to the next one

Hi

I'm downloading it right now (thanks to the T1 at the office i won't loose too much time, because i got a ton of work waiting for me....well i'll get into it later /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

I think that each movie that makes it to the community is worth the effort, just taking your time to make a movie deserves our gratitude Mysticpuma 2003, maybe a simpler procedure would be to use FRAPS 2.0 and then virtual Dub to assemble and encode everything !

My first movie was made using FRAPS 1.9 and i wasn't very having with the resolution (i can't share it through P2P or ICQ if anyone is interested /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ) then someone suggested that since the recording was made in 640x480 resolution i could push up a bit the Video Card workLoad. So i switched on Antialiasing (6x) and set all the details at High (i can't afford Excellent setting tough /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif ) I must admit that the game has reached a new dimension for me...wow even my lowBudget Geforce4Mx440 gives me an oustanding beauty in the landscapes !

Hi Falcon

I tried to contact you at your ICQ number..i really want to take a look at Davinci's video...please log-on ASAP.

Good flight to you !

Really great movie and I do love the final dogfight between the British Hurrican and German Bf109! That was spectacular! Some parts of the movie became a bit repitive but definitely great to watch. Still, you techniques used in this first film are a leap towards the best and for sure good things can be learned from them. Each new IL2 movie maker is making leaps towards fine film making. Great work. I am working on my next film and wish to learn more on how to compress so the final rendered product can be around 50 Mb or less, your input is appreciated, keep up the good work.

Great vid -

Now on to the Constructive Critisism.

The only thing I can say that I though was lacking - would be the sound - the music in the background was nice - but I would have enjoyed it more had I heard the planes roaring the guns blasting -

another thing I would like to see you film makers put in the films -

Some coms chat between the pilots - a low quality TS recording to respresent the quality of Radio back then.

Just my opnion.

Again Great Video.

Keep it up - and if you are looking for any pilots in upcoming shoots - I'm ready willing and able (to get shot down)

Really great! Well done.

Two things:

First - the color was off on my system. Yellows were pale blue. Sky was a crimson/pink color. It's probably just a result of my settings or software.

Second - Ride of the Valkryes is, IMHO, a bit of a cliche. True, Wagner is very dramatic and the music fits the editing and theme like a glove. But I wish ppl would not use Wagner or Beethoven so much in their vids. Maybe Mahler or Holst would be good choices; they are also dramatic, but not so overexposed.

For me Bugs Bunny ruined the Valkryes lietmotif for anything serious. I end up singing "Don't shoot the wabbit, don't shoot the wabbit, don't shoot the wabbit, just let him go!" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

But it was still an excellent job! Keep 'em coming!

Yes I was apprehensicve about Valkryes, but it is a formidable piece of music for the intro and I couldn't resist. Yours is the first I have heard of colour problems though!
I did use 'Holst- The planets-Mars' for third section of music though!
About the repetitiveness of some areas, thanks, I am still learning and constructive criticism is always welcome. The problem with the in game sound is that it is a real pain to match up with the action. i.e, a plane flying towards the camera and shooting doesn't use doppler sound, so it all has to be audio edited. However, that's a challenge for my next one maybe.
Lastly, it's good to know that we may get a few more purchases for this ace piece of software if anybody sees this vid. Please keep your comments coming, and I may need some pilots to help with the next one, so I'll keep you informed when I get around to shooting the next one.Maybe Oleg could pilot one?
It is going to be difficult to beat the ending though.....but I'll try. Oh yes, I will try.

Wow, great movie, absolutely loved the last bit, zoomed in close on the 109 and then the hurri just drops in behind it, great.........One question, that last bit of music for the 109-hurri scene, who is it by?

Thanks.

Love the chase at the end! Seeing that Hurri drop in behind that 109 in slow-mo made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

Ferocious movie! The chase at the end, as many people have posted, was fantastic. The only suggestion (and it's a minor one) deals with bailing out pilots. You timed them awesome in all but one (the first). Great work otherwise! I can't get over that chase scene!

The hurri zooming down on the BF109's 6 was definitely the best scene i've EVER seen, in any game movie...it was fantastic. One question though...why is your crosshair not aligned? You can fix that by hitting shift+F1 and it'll center the gunsight, making for easier targeting. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

XyZspineZyX
09-12-2003, 12:26 AM
Finally downloaded it...but...at the 9:36 point of the 9:56 movie, the video froze and teh sound cont9nued to the end....But, it froze up Windows media player, then locked me up so i had to reboot. ANybody else have that problem?? I am using Windows ME.... I had tried Xvid for some things a while back, and it caused me some problems then, as well. I think it is XVid that causes me problems. too bad. I'd like to see it in a *.wmv Windows Movie-Maker format.

I liked what I saw of the movie very much...Excellent Finale!!

The technique you used in making teh film resulted in a subtley different 'grain' to the final product, hard to define, but I liked it...It helps disguise the sometimes artificial-looking'crsipness' of the Sim graphics.

I think maybe the middle could be cut down a bit, so as not to risk getting excessively repetitive.

I do agree with someone up above that the Valkyrie music is a bit overdone/overused/cliche'ed in the "movie-making" world...

Oh Yes ! ! !
The movies are getting better and better .
So far , I've seen about 7 movies made with footage from this game , and I must say , this is the best one yet .
The editing , switching between different scenes is much faster , more dynamic compared to what I've seen in other movies . In this way you are clearly expressing the hectic and fast character of air-combat.
You were also very good in using the in-game external view movements.
Many of the films I've seen before made the mistake of making the typical external circular camera movement much to fast and unrealistic

Good choise of music , you can't go wrong with Wagner .
If you're looking for music for a next film , be sure to consider John Williams or James Horner .

I hope that the soundtrack of your next movie will include speech and other sounds.
In a movie ( esp. in a war movie , or action movie ) the music is used to 'underline' or support the action , but it should not be the only sound-element the whole time.
In most cases you should end up with a mix of voices , sounds in general ( ie engine noise or gunfire ) and music .
This mix changes constantly , bringing one of those 3 elements to the background or to the foreground , depending on the scene .
If you only use music in an action scene , the viewer is less involved in the action , and has the impression to be 'outside' not really fully aware of whats happening , as if he was in a daydream .

Finally , allow me to point out a few minor remarks/ constructive tips as well :
Avoid situations where you can clearly see the ( graphical ) limitations of the game :
Tree examples :
1 ) after approximately 1 min 52 sec : the close up of the Me109 : you can see that the spinner of the Me 109 is not round but has chopped-off edges . Avoid this by not showing the spinner , or by zooming out to make it less obvious .
Be very carefull with a big close up , because you are magnifying all kinds of rendering and 3D modelling limitations .
2 ) after approximately 4 min 06 : the condensation-stripes .
In the game , those stripes are not modelled as 3D objects which have a 'volume', but rather as something flat . In most situations , you won't see that they are flat , but sometimes the curve of a condensation-stripe is not smooth , but spoiled by one or more abrupt 'cracks' , especially when the flat condensation-stripe is curved in 2 axes , and becomes 'twisted' .
At some view-angles , you can see those 'cracks' forming a distinct bold line , or even a star-shaped figure .
So I would avoid showing these in a scene.
3 ) after approximately 9 min 08 : inside view of the cockpit : unfortunately the game does not show the pilot leggs , feet , and arms , so avoid view-angles where you can see the stick and the pedals , because there is nothing on it to move them

All in all very well done for a first movie , keep 'em coming .

Very nice first effort. I'm always curious to see what vision others have of music that is popular like Flight of the Val and O'Fortuna etc... I hope that you will continue to make new movies in the future. S!

Hello SergeVE,

Speaking for myself,

I thank you for giving these well taken tips, not just for this latest 'film' but to all IL2 'film' makers.

...one thing you have to remember, these are sim players that are getting into the making movie hobby. This new hobby began just less than 7 months ago and I have seen it make giant leaps towards professional quality. Check out these two latest fine movies made by our Chinese counterparts:

http://www.ubisoft.com.cn/Information/Lomac/IL2FB_NEW.wmv

http://www.ubisoft.com.cn/Information/Lomac/doffbv2.wmv

You will notice that many, if not all of your valid points are taken into accout. As UNACLUPE pointed out in another thread, we do NOT wish to make this IL2 movie making experience as a contest but rather a way to show appreciation of a fine flight simulator and it's historic significance. The films you have seen before were the first ones of it's breed and no way can compare to today's latest but they are just that, a tribute and nothing else. Please do not take this as an attack but rather an introduction to what this community has done in less than a year. Again, I do thank you for your good pointers.

Best regards,

THX-1138/NTESLA

- I downloaded Stranger1 from Wiley's site and the
- picture froze after thirty seconds but the music
- played on ,a shame realy because I enjoyed the
- Infamy movie I downloaded earlier .

you dont have the latest divx codec installed

http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX51Bundle.exe

simply download and install that, and it should play fine.

As others stated, excellent ending shot with the hurricane and 109. When the hurri closed in on the 109, the timing to the music was right on (O Fortuna--a classic) and I liked the use of the slow motion effect. Well done Mystic.

It would also be good to add some special effect within the movie to prevent repetition.

All around excellent. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Love all the music, especially the Karmina at the end. One of my all time favorite classical pieces, and favorite Opera. Added to the mood of the ending very well too.

Guys, what can I say.Well here goes.
I made this movie under a time limit, that I set myself. I realised that it wouldn't be perfect due to the limitations of the graphics engine in close up, I know there are no hands and legs in the cockpit, but that is something I have no control of and unfortunately I needed that view to capture the bullets ripping through the glass. Again, when it comes to the tree/Hurricane explosion, the settings were all perfect and high, and so again, I had no control of the tree definition. The close-up of the 109, I now realise has a non circular prop cone.....so I'll watch out for that next time!
I do know about shift-F1, but I just chose the view in the movie out of preference rather than anything else.

Let me say now, I was pleased with my finished movie, I too now think it is a little overlong, but I think I made the mistake of trying to account for the shooting down of all the planes. Next time I'll work around this to keep it a lot tighter, and more dramatic.
I sat down last-night (Thursday GMT, UK), and started scripting my next movie. My intention is to make it 5 mins, but twice the resolution of this one.
I am open to suggestions of what you would like to see, at the moment I intend it to be 32 German bombers (not sure which ones yet) with fighter escort, heading for a city.
Now, I am still not sure what I am going to defend it with, possibly flak and Russian fighters, however I may make it American fighters, I'll see if I get much feedback on this.
There were be certain special effects added, and I am going to construct parts of the city for specific shots, and so that I can have multiple (fixed) camera sources, for dramatic events.
I also intend to remove the extended build up to conflict.Just to keep it tighter. There will be some, but not the take-offs, which I used in this one to show that there were only four 109's.
After reading the comments, I see that in game sound would be appreciated for the next one, with some radio chatter. The in game sound, will obviously take me some time, and as for chatter, I will keep that in but limited, so as not to distract from the visuals and rousing music.
I have to say, that the comments I have read so-far, really have made me decide to undertake another movie. To see it described more than once as the "best movie I've seen so-far", obviously makes me smile. Of course I'm proud of this, so I'll try and create another one to match. Gotta say, it's gonna be hard to match the finale.

I really appreciate the time that you guys have taken to watch and give me feedback on this movie, and please, keep your suggestions coming so that I can make the next one even better...( Oh my, what am I letting myself in for!)

Thanks, Mysticpuma.

P.S.. Have you downloaded it yet DedEyes? lol.

I liked it. It had some really nice elements and action. I was not sure of the plot other than some planes getting shot down, but it was still a very nice video. Slo mo was kewl!

Thanks for everyone who has replied. My next one is at story board stage. It is really intended to be an all action sequence, not too much story i.e, 'build up'. The end sequence is already looking as good as, if not better than the last."Beware the columns of death!" is all I can say at the moment.

I still have time to change the plane prefs, so if you would prefer Russian v German or American v German, let me know, Thanks.

Mysticpuma:

With the impending release of the Free addon (Thanks again, Oleg), the addition of the B17 and the flyable P51 will draw LOTS of attention to the making of German-American movies...

Thus the Appeal, for example, of PE8's in USAAF skins will fade once the real thing(B17) shows up....

I'd suggest you do a Russian-German movie now...or Rumanian, Finnish, etc....

Also, for ALL: The NEW "Virtual War Cinema" Site/forums(s) are available again here:

http://www.blacksheepwebdesign.net/VirtualWarCinema/

The intent of this new Site is to provide a place for concentration of discussions about FlightSim movie-making...rather than scattered threads on several different forums/site...Hope to see you all over there soon.

Very impressive!

One suggestion (don't know if its possible):

On another post there is a guy who has applied filters and effects to IL2 still images (I would include the link but the forum is painfully slow for me today). The images have a really authentic look. Is there any way that video editing/processing software could allow you to do something like that? Sort of overexposed newsreel looking stuff maybe...

Come to think of it, I think those stills were photographed from the screen, so it couldn't be done in quite the same way for your work.

Even if its not possible, I'm looking forward to seeing the next creation....

Yeah Flake, it can be done, it's time intensive but more Processor time than my time. It is possible using after effects to create a similar effect to "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers", where the colour is slightly bleached to give it a an 'old film' washed out effect. I did apply a dust and scrtches effect for even more realism, but for a 10 minute movie it seemed too much. I'll take on the previous posters idea about Russian v German, and as it's the only view I've had, I'll go with the popular oppinion.

'The 'columns of doom' are coming!.........soon.
