1. All settings on hardest.
2. Fly against many aces in QMB.
3. Get hit many times, laugh merrily and have some gay moments inspecting my holes watching the track afterwards.
4. Go online and repeat 3.
5. live happily many days hereafter.

A truncated version of how I break in a new sim:

Break seal on shrinkwrap and breath in the escaping air

Open CD case after spraying with liquid nitrogen to slow down any bomb fuses/ bobytraps store staff may of placed

Don protective glove

Remove CD from impossibly complicated CD restraining device using high grade surgical equipment

Place manual into sealed plastic bag, then under 4 cubic meters of sandbags and destroy with a controlled detonation

Using chalk, baking flour, bath salts and castor sugar, enscribe a pentagram of protection on the floor around PC to ward of evil spirits,

Load CD to CD loading device-reader-spinner-thingy,

Make holy sign to ward of dreaded mobo gremlins,

Sacrafic a small RAID component to please my graphics card,

Don leather flying cap,

Spin round 7 times, face screen and begin to chant "gel-O" backwards,

Strip down to my 'flying loincloth'

Close eyes and enter Zen trance to attain one-ness with simulation environment

Fall off chair while attempting 'Lazy Locust' extreeme Shaolin meditation postion.

Cures lack of arms on computer chair,

Rest feet upon holy pedals and lay hands upon the holy HOTAS,

Forget what I was doing and make a cup of tea,

^nowadays it's more important to fit the manual in the dvd cover.. then to cover the game.

I install the game, select quick play get a first impression with (favourite) aircraft fly some more (combat). Then I quit the game and read manual, maybe start a career/else. Not neccesary in that order. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Spend the next 4 days setting it all up.
the following 3 tweaking, but flying for no more than 1 min at a time.
another 2 days fine tuning
1 more day to ponder over some systems and functions
And finally....
fly for 2 mins then whine about how the uber-clouds are over modelled that keep giving a rough ride http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Usually:

a) borrow it
b) install the new sim
c) go to instant action
d) quit after half an hour
e) run Il-2 this time
f) quit after an hour
g) uninstall other sim, return it, promise i won't buy it.

or at least that's how it was with the last 6 i tried. No wonder they don't anymore have demos to try before you buy.

have there been 6 attempts made to rival IL2, or does that include non airwar sims too?

Wings of War, BoB II, CFSII, CFSIII, Falcon 4 and LOMAC. The last one i really liked it, but with the last patch it was unplayable with the Evo. So sadly i rejected this one too. FS2004 is very good though, although not military, so can't compare.

neural_dream. i totally missed 'Wings of War' and dismissed falcon 4 as older then my granny.

i really liked lomac too, but i had to put the gfx down to the level of the original IL2 to get it running at a fps i wanted to, at least when flying the warthog.

Always spins.

The hardest thing for a sim to get right, seemingly (MS have never managed it).

The original IL2 had a brilliant stall/spin feel to it, even if it is a bit scripted.

Firts thing I do after installing ANY vid game/sim is crank all the settings up to the max and see how it runs.

If I cant get it running good on my system then it has to have a large amount of potential to consider me upgrading.

CFS3 btw holds the record for staying on my h/drive the shortest time ever http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Read the manual at least once. Sick I know. I won't play a game until I have a good deal of understanding on its various options and possible tweaks. My first interest is resolving the technical aspect of the game, then I can concentrate on the actual gameplay.

the first thing i do is take a big sniff of the manual ..fresh game smell yummmm ...then i install and usully play for 2 mins if its not as good as falcon 4 lock on or pacific fighters i usuly crimate it and put it on the shelf of "you tried but not as good as pf shelf" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

hmmmm...what i do......

First i read all rew`s online on it. Second i talk to some of the dudes i know online who allready have bought it. If i still am interestet i go to the shop and have a look at it, if i still have no doubts a buy it, but if i still doubt it i wount.

If i get it i will leave it on the shelf untill i know i got atleast 2-4 hours of playing time

When the time come i will install it, set keys up, check all settings and have a brief look at manual. If posible i take a full start mission (take off) and simply work the plane through its paces. Take off, lvl flight gear down, then gear up climp to altitude (normaly around 4500m) and then press the plane through some manouvers and then land

second flight is kill the plane flight, test gear break speed, test wing break speed, test engine cooking time, simply press the envolope and abit more

3rd flight is "get the feel" flight. I fly over the map (country) look at the towns check fuel consumption doing all the stuff i do in "normal" combat when fuel is 25% i head back and land

4th flight. Combat, all the same as 3rd just throwing in a few gremlins to heat things up

5th flight. werry simply going to the practice grounds of onwhine flying no better testing ground

6th flight. me flying down from the chair cause girlfriend hit me with a frying pan cause of the time i have spendet on the above
