I have owned IL2 since its original release. I flew the 109 and LA's for the most part. In FB I have been for 99 percent of the time been flying the 109.

This weekend I finally took the nestea plunge and really started flying the P40. I learn to shoot using wing mounted guns in WW2 Fighters. We won't compare ballistics of each sim since WW2 Fighters isn't in the same ballpark, but for me the wing mounted western style gun platforms just come very natural. When flying the 109, and I love that series to death, I find I have to be just off the tail or dead behind a foe in order to score hits, but with the wing guns platform I can get guys in very hard deflection shots. I mean I can come up to a 109 or what not at 250 to 350 meters and literaly pick my target, engine wings etc.....

Maybe its a site thing, how about the rest of you what is the easier platfrom for you to shoot with?

nose platforms are better because they dont have to be as dialed in to hit something, and it doesnt matter how far from a target ou are. also there are more bullets hitting in a small area which causes more damage than hitting the plane evenly throughout. wing mounted guns usually spray bullets in the gunsight area. so if your a spray and pray person wing mounted guns might be just right for you

well my name was spelled wrong

It's really similar to the difference between a shotgun and a rifle.

Nose mounted guns have the disadvantage of being behind the prop, and therefore have a slower ROF because of the synchronization. (don't know if this is modeled in FB)

Wing mounted guns have the disadvantage of a wide shot pattern and add extra wing loading.

Nose mounted guns are technically more accurate, but your more likely to hit something w/ the wing mounted guns.

Ill take either..

But one thing i do like about wing mounted guns is that there is no muzzle flash blocking yur view when you shoot....

I know what you mean...I really like the P-40's firepower. In some ways I find the P-40's concentrated six .50cals more devastating than the P-47's eight. Depends on the situation.

As people have pointed out...there are pros and cons to both and they even out fairly well.

Depends on your preferences. If you like to spray lead at something until it drops out of the sky, wing guns are good. The one problem being that if you get out of convergence things can get a little weird, but it's no big deal really. I prefer fuselage mounted guns because I like the accuracy and the fact that I don't have to worry about convergence.

I also would take cannons over machine guns any day, but again that's a matter of accuracy vs volumes of fire.

though I mostly fly the 109, I do like wing guns...I find the muzzle flash covers my view.

Find as well with wing guns you can correct your aiming easier as you can readily see the bullet stream...wheras with the 109 you are blinded

Yes I find wing guns much easier to aim with too.Its seems more intuitive as if you can gauge where the bullets path will cross.I never really get this feeling with nose mounted guns and I was wondering why since they are supposed to be easier to aim with.

I think it might have to do with the way the vapor trails look when your in the cockpit. They seem to not coincide with the way the plane is moving and just start off in what seems like the wrong place hanging alittle above cockpit.I cant explain it well but I have this feeling that if you could turn off vapor trails for the guns you would be aiming much better with the nose mounted guns.

The muzzle flashes dont help out much when firing nose guns either.
