I took this picture when I was in Los Angeles of the Hungarian Ace's licence plate (Mr. Michael Karatsonyi of the Puma squadron), naming his beloved Bf 109G6 he flew against Mustangs in 1944 in Hungary. It is a real picture that has not been altered whatsoever. I thought some of you 109 nuts would like it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Haha nice one!
Still don't know why the 109 is called "BF" in FB.
It should say Me109 like it says Me262.

I'm sure plenty of guys will come by and tell you that the reason they're called "BF" is because that was the main manufacturer.

Which is stupid.
Messerschmitt desinged it, like Me110, Me262, etc.
During the war it was ALWAYS called Me109 by ALL countries.
It was never adressed as Bf109, always Me109 or just 109.
Post war some history weenie for some reason decided to call it Bf...'.

I think that BF is the correct prefix for the 109 because of mergers and things with the company that made the plane. I heard that models made before 1938 should be called BF. bf109 and bf110.

Denotes where it was manufactured. Even Google will help you on this one. If you're serious it's surprising you don't know

The designation is related to where it was designed.

From what I have been told "All 109 models from 1942 and after are ME-109's while the pre-1942 models are BF-109's."

But TO HE** WIT DAT! It's always BF-109 to me! lol

I always thought everyone simply referred to them as "109s".

Me-109, Bf-109 - same thing, either name works. Bf-262 doesn't though! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Designed by Messerschmitt, but manufactured by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. I take to calling them Bf109 though I guess it's all in what you prefer really. Both terms are correct.

Search the forum,

there is a nice lengthy explanation on the names and when the Bfs were renamed to MEs

Unfortunatelly I do not have the thread

The same thing with the FW-190, that came to be called 'Ta' in, eh, 1943, I think, after some serious modifications (and manufacturer change).

XyZspineZyX

Bf is the correct name for the early 109/110, Messerschmitt was the engineer, but Bf (= Bayrische Flugzeugwerke) was the manufacturer, it was later renamed in Messerschmitt AG, so both names are correct for the later versions, but only Bf for the early birds..
The "Ta"-name-tag was given to a reconstructed 190 (including more wingspan[up to 14.8m] a longer fuselage [0.4m] several engines and a pressurized cockpit] to honour the leading Focke-Wulf engineer Kurt Tank...in fact it was him self who asked for the honour....along with the 190 =Ta 152, the Fw 211 was renamed in FW-Ta-154 also known as "Moskito"

No not correct. In german they were called BF109 and Bf110. Sometimes ppl call them " Messerschmitt BF109" the Me was used later after 43. The planes were often called Messerschmitts by the pilots but the correct name was Bf.

I had a frightening moment driving on the interstate to work one day. I saw this personalized license plate that read 'MESUQ'. As I passed the car I glanced at the driver only to find a fruity guy caking on lip-gloss staring back at me. He winked. I floored it and got the heck out of there. A few minutes later the license plate became clear.

Eeeeeeeeewwwwwwww............... yuck.
I should've left him Helos' number.

Well the Bf/Me thing was a transition in LW aircraft naming scheme: At first, planes would be called by their manufacturer

BF-109 - Bayerische Flugzeugwerke Model 109

FW-190 - Focke-Wulf Model 190

Then they transitioned to naming the model after it`s designer:

Me-109 - Messerschmidt

but ALSO

FW-190 - Focke-Wulf (the design TEAM, Tank didn`t do everything...)

and

TA-152 - After Kurt TAnk, the designer

They changed the scheme around `42-

Anyone find it strange, a man that used to shoot down the very people he lives among now has his old weapon of distruction cited on his car?

I spoke with Michael Karatsonyi and he told me how he was nearly killed by the people that lives among when a Mustang's .50s hit the main fuel line and scorched over 40% of his body, causing him to bail out and to only have skin over the parts of the body that his flight suit was covering. He came to the United States after the war ended
to have plastic surgery on a number of places including his eyelids which he could not close before the operation. It was a war and he had no personal hate against Americans. In fact, one of the reasons he was forced into flying was because German occupation of Hungary demanded that he join or be sent to a concentration camp because of his Jewish background. How's that for a catch 22!

reality is a difficult and complicated matter, there wasn't only bad guys on one and only heros on the other side. In fact on all sides where "good man" few.

it is funny at all that IL2 is the first FS where germans are the "blue" side /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I think we should put all the people that insist it should be called "Bf109" on one side of a field, all those that insist it should be call an "Me109" on the other, give 'em all crowbars and let 'em go at it.
