I noticed that the latest video is the exact same as a previous video, but they replaced the XM8 (M8) rifles (with SCARS I think).

Is this related to the fact the Army has opened up the bidding process for the M-16 replacement to other manufacturers? Something to do with licensing/patent from Heckler & Koch? Or is it still in the game?

It probably has to do with the fact that because the Ghosts are a specoal forces unit of the ARMY they belong to SOCOM.

Last year SOCOM passed a requirement for a modular rifle to replace the M-4, M-16, MK-11, MK-12, MK-18 CQBR, the M-14 DMR within their organization. Of the 12 submitted systems, SCAR won out in "a Full and Open Competition", thus becoming (after a few modifications) the official rifle of SOCOM, and hence the Ghosts.

What were the 12 weapon systems in this?

Second I hope they remove that worthless foward grip. If they are not going to make them swept back then don't include them at all dammit.

Dude, calm down. Dont get all FPS Doug on us. http://www.big-boys.com/articles/toomuchcs.html You guys arent the ones who have to take this gun into combat and neither do I. All we have to do is take it into combat in a game. Oh no it has a forward grip on it. Doesnt effect anything. Some people prefer the forward grip some dont. Move on.

The vertical hangrip was designed that way because it doubles as a bipod.

Me, I often end up holding onto the mag of my M 16 on FTXs, so I would love to have a forward hand grip. That SCAR weapon looks pretty nice, by the way.

There's a rumour on a few boards that SOCOM wants to redo the SCAR competition, so it's a possibility that the FN SCAR might not be part of SOCOM's arsenal.

One thing... This SCAR weapon, where do I find documentation on it? Google it, you say? I don't like looking at acne scars. This weapon also looks oddly similar to a weapon that my friend showed me. Don't remember the name, but it sports progammable ranged grenade detonation, among other features similar to other future weapons systems.

check militaryphotos.net. There's a thread on it in General Discussion (may be on page 2)

Its pretty hard to follow what's been going on in the small arms department of the Army; one thing is for sure the XM-29 (aka SABR, OICW) was dropped in it's current configuration at this time (the future may bring it back). About 4 months ago the Army issued a industry request for a modular rifle design called the OICW Increment I (II being the XM-25), like the XM-8 it has to come in 3 different versions (compact, standard, and marksman), and an extra LMG variant with about 50% commonality with the rest of the family. All logic points to the fact that the XM-8 will have to compete against other proposals before becoming Army standard; considering what's available on the market, there are considerably better systems.

All of a sudden, a week ago, the Army issues an amendment to the solicitation saying that OICW Increment I has been put on hold because other services have become interested in the process (they don't mention if they mean the USMC too, which is unlikely as they already chose the M-16A4); this means that the requirements have to be reviewed to fit the needs of all services interested. So for now, nothing's happening.

On the other hand, SOCOM decided a year ago to look for their own modular rifle program that would replace the M-16/4, MK-11, MK-12, MK-18, and M-14; this heralded the SCAR requirement. After the 12 proposals were submitted, FN's design was chosen as winner (note that SOCOM is only obliged to buy 25 weapons), one would assume that FN's entry would be the next rifle for SOCOM. Well now there's a rumour on some boards saying that some members of SOCOM were not happy with the choice and there will be a second SCAR competition with even more entries including HK's 416.

So in short the XM-8 is not a done deal (and probably never will be), and FN's SCAR could potentially not be the next rifle for SOCOM (but hope it is for GRIN's sake).
