View Full Version : Opinions on BOLD counter measures?

Hi all,
I would like to ask if anyone has had success using the BOLD system. I have found it completely ineffective, after employing it in various battle conditions.
I appreciate that historically it didn't work very well. But, as this is a computer game, I would be interested to know if any other skippers have devised tactics that incorporate BOLD effectively.
Before U-57 met its maker, I had reached the second upgrade in early 43, it didn't seem to have any improvement over the 1st model....Opinions?

I can use them effectivly.

Deploy countermeasure, slow way down, change depth, and do a couple hard turns, and soon enough the DDs are gonna be depth charging bubbles!

Yeah the BOLDs work and get better over time but you need a strategy dependent on the battle conditions at the time. Check that you are "rig for silent running", deploy the device, change course & depth but you need to sneak off, not at flank because they will hear you especially if there are more than 2 DD's. Wait until the DD's mess up the water with the depth charges for going hard. You can use Bold to set up a DD for a torp quite easily...stern tube, 400m range, right in the guts...boom! My best was one DD stern, two DD's forward with FAT's chasing the USS Casablanca carrier, very cool! When it descides to run on my system, this game is great.

I like to wait until they make their first attack pass, I usually ride it out as it's woefully inaccurate. Just when I pass out of his sonar scope I hit flank speed and wait for charges to start popping, as soon as the last one goes off I know he's about 1/4 way through the turn to come back around, so I throw the CMs out, wait about 10 seconds and go back to silent running, they never figure it out.

Hi all,
appreciate the advice, when it becomes available in my current game I'm going to have to try out those tricks.

They also come in handy if you Happen to get chased by one of your own accoustic torps http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I found this out too late lol

I use them effectively by dropping them long before an enemy DD actually finds me. For example, I go deep (100m+) and silent and thus slip by convoy escorts with no problem. Then I pop up in front of the formation and take out the juiciest targets. While diving deep again I drop a counter measure or two. The escorts will come looking for me and since I will be quite and deep by the time they get there, all they will see are the BOLDs. Thus they depth charge them for a few minutes while I slip to safety. When I don't do this they don't get a false contact and so they will search more persistantly for me. Sometimes they find me, sometimes they don't in that situation. The key is to be silent when you drop them. Then the enemy has multiple "subs" to attack. If there are more than one enemy warship then you may need to drop additional counter measures to keep them busy. The BOLD does not make you invisivible, it only gives the enemy more contacts to attack thus reducing the chances they come after you as long as you are quite and slow.

IF you are being chased by one of youur own acoustic torpedos just turn off your engine, one started chasing me once after i fired it at a DD, i turned off my engine while it was maybe 150 meters away, and started a hard to starboard, with my remaining speed i turned and it left me alone, then it kept going and hit a cruiser, end result, much better then i intended it to be.

When i was in the " South China Sea's " during the war, we used to go to "silent routine", reduce speed to 0 Kt's,then listen to where the DD was coming from, we'd plot his bearings on the map , and figure his course/ speed from these bearing's,
Then we'd ask the W.O for a firing solution , then ask him again and again, until either the target AOB got to 85* port or Starboard, 0r was on a bearing of + or - 10* degrees of own ship's head ,then let lose your dog's of war and cry havoc( some old fella with a dodgy beard, and monkey haircut)
If perchance you fired your dog's of war at a destroyer , and you've stuffed the firing solution up, you'll need an escape plan, cos if you haven't got one , your Flotilla Commander will be sending T/grams to you and your crew's families
first thing we'd do if we got discovered was to put our boat on a course to show 0* AOB to the DD, presenting minimal contact area to the sonar, .......
too be continued
