View Full Version : What a difference a joystick makes! (Back to flying)

Not anything really pertinent, just thought I'd share the joy....

My joystick had been broken for many months, and during classes I didn't really mind because I did not have much time to spare anyway. Then summer came, and my longing for Il-2 increased - so much so that I started to fly as rear gunner in an Il-2 campaign. After several missions you begin to appreciate a little bit why the AI gunner is so terrified - you try facing backwards wondering if the pilot will fly you into a hillside every time he pitches down, with a gun that doesn't pivot enough and doesn't have enough ammo. Then a Bf.109 comes out of nowhere and guess who's the first to die...

On an a separate note, it looks like Il-2 rear gunners had a high chance of suffering back-injury during crash landing - seeing how they sit on a canvas belt.

Anyway I couldn't take it anymore and came up with a convoluted reason why I NEEDED to get a joystick and fly Il-2, even though I'm really short on money right now. I wanted something better than my last one - which had maybe 6 buttons - but only 4 could be mapped. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif I ended up getting a Logitech attack 3. This thing has 11! And a throttle! I even have my flaps and wheel brakes mapped now. Now all I need to do is teach myself to not instinctively got to the keyboard... I can actually use my rudder and drop bombs at the same time! May not mean much to some of you, but for me its a big change.

See you in the virtual sky...

Well, not strictly speaking. But after mission start I would switch to rear gunner and let AI fly the plane.
