BoB had lots of possibility but I could never get it to run with any stability, much less without stutter and I know a large number of the community had similar problems. Hopefully, with Shockwave, we'll get a finished product that is playable. How can they get it to market by Feb is what I'm wondering.

11-07-2004, 01:34 PM
let us see what they create. Have BoB too. It was really never playable at all but the flight model and the number of planes and other nice features were really promising.

I was playing old BoB, but must say that game is rather unplayable (at least seriously). Lack of proper key binding (never understand that aspect of theRowan's BoB), little bug with resolution...

Other than that it was good game for it's time. We will see what future BoB is going to bring us.

"LONDON, UK (November 5, 2004) - GMX Media and Shockwave Productions have announced they have decided to produce a new WWII air combat game entitled, "Battle of Britain: Wings of Victory!" Earlier this year, GMX Media acquired rights to the former and critically acclaimed "Rowan€s Battle of Britain." Shockwave Productions is developing the new title, which is scheduled for release in early 2005.

"With the huge success of Firepower Shockwave were the obvious choice for the development of Battle of Britain: Wings of Victory, we are glad to be working with the great guys at Shockwave again." commented COO for GMX Media, Eugene Perry. "Development is going well and on time, the game is looking fantastic, we look forward to showing it to the public."

"The original game from Rowan released in 2001 is still the most complete and authentic reproduction of the Battle of Britain ever done. Battle of Britain €˜Wings of Victory€ is building on this strong foundation to create something truly special. Every member of the team brings passion to their work and it shows in the quality of the game," said Scott Gentile of Shockwave Production Inc.

Release Date: February 2005!" ( http://www.warcry.com/scripts/columns/view_sectionalt.phtml?site=15&id=108&colid=5593 )

I wonder what the guys of the BoB/MiG Alley Development Group think about this?

FWIW, I could never get Rowan's Battle of Britain to work on my XP computer; lots of hang-ups at loading screen and then the flight models are a total mess once the game starts. I patched up to BoB/MDG's 0.97(?) patch with no luck and then gave it up for good. Rowan's BoB has potential -- I liked some of the features I saw -- but I think that Shockwave is going to have to deliver a really massive overhaul to make this attractive ... Will GMX put the money and time into allowing this, or is this basically an attempt to update the visuals and send it out to market to make a quick buck? (No offense is intended to either Shockwave or GMX here, as both appear to be in the biz for the long haul and have good reputations ... I'm not charging that the XiCat/ Mad Doc "Jane's Attack Squadron" fiasco is repeating itself. I do, however, recognize that some projects are seen as 'meat on the table' to publishers without requiring the pain of development time and costs, and pay the bills for grander flagship titles.)

Being that part of 1C:Maddox Game's success in the IL-2 series can be attributed to the developers resynthethizing some of the best features of prior sims into their own completely new product, I can only assume that they have had one eye on the Rowan's version as a template (in a way of speaking) as they work on their own BoB. This is more interesting to me than watching how Shockwave will re-interpret/refine existing code.

Re-hashing an old game engine? I'm skeptical about this one but will wait and see what they can deliver.

Hope that link works.

Is this bad news for Oleg's BOB? I certainly hope not, although I did like the tactical side of Rowans BOB where you ran figther command, the flight dynamics were poor.

Have you seen the screenshots?

Doesn't look like a rehash of the old engine to me. It's looking very promising and because it comes out early next year it's even better.

And that cockpit shot looks sweeeeeet. 6DOF capable as well. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Competition is good. It benefits all simmers.

Hmm, tried search-function on those BoB2 pages in my Firefox but could not find anything about multiplayer. Seems to me that it's singleplayer only...

The Bf-109 cockpit looks very good. Much better than the ones in IL-2, although just like IL-2's Bf-109 someone appears to have chopped the nose off immediately in front of the cockpit. The list of features also sounds very interesting, with different weather conditions etc. I just hope they can deliver.

Definitely worth a look, anyway.

What interests me is that the detail on the ground looks soooo much better than anything ive seen in IL2 or PF , i mean look at those trees , it actualy looks like a tree and not a big clump of orrible green vegetation like IL2 has , on the downside if its true its Single player only then what a complete waste !

List of flyables to date:

1. Spitfire Mk IA
2. Hurricane Mk IA
3. Bf109 E-4
4. Bf110 C-4
5. Ju87 B-2
6. Ju88 A-1 (gunners)
7. He111 H-3 (gunners)
8. Do17 Z-2 (gunners)

I think "gunners" means "gunners only", and that the bombers aren't pilotable and are flown by the AI.

Well,I still have and stil play Rowan's BoB wioth the 0.98 patch from BoB/MA Dev Group. The campaign system is truly awesome, the best I've ever seen. And the game has the feeling of beeing there at the timeof BoB.When you are in the map screen you hear al the information about new air raids etc, noises and so on.And When you are flying your Spitfire to battle the biggest impressin is the amount of German aircrafts...this game shows whac does it mean to have crowded skyhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifHowever-FM is poor, damage model is poor also....I hope the new BoB will be much much better.IMHO it is not a threat fot Oleg's BoB as we all know Oleg's previous sims (http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)and I'm sure "Oleg's BoB" is equal to "better BoB".

Check out their forums guys:

I'm downloading a leaked movie from their forum as we speak.

The campaign sounds great Macca44 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I plan on getting both BoB sims Oleg's and this one http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hi there , Snoop!http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've seen the movie you mentioned, quite nice, have to admit.I hope they will make the FM and DM much better then in Rowan' BoB.Mhhhmmm....Take off in my Hurricane and lead the mighty 303 Sqdrn to battle ,to defent the poor British civilians down there....
In Rowan's BoB I also liked the fact ,that all the Squadrons had real names of their commanders - so for example - 303's British commander - Kellet is there and the sqdrn has its real code letters.Love it.

Gimme gimme gimme!!!!

12-23-2004, 11:23 AM
models are all wrong...outside of the hub cap on a 109e was white..theres is black, and that was a maint. panel that was sqaure in front of the tail gear..they have some round thing..

...models are way too far off to be a enjoyable game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hi there Macca http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think they are improving the flight models http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

That sounds great, it really looks like it is going to be a very immersive sim http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I just watched the 1969 BOB film a few days ago http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It would be great to fly as part of one of the Polish fighter groups gota http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It's good to hear they use real squadron commanders http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I look forward to flying this sim with you and the other FI. It also sounds like it is going to be a great single player experience http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

12-23-2004, 11:47 AM
I look forward to it ,too, Snoop.Hope somebody releases it in Poland, otherwise I will have to use my freind in Germany to get it (which means additional costs - chocolates, flowers, when she's in Poland, etc).
If the game happens to be good - I'll get it for sure!

Salut m8!

12-23-2004, 03:24 PM
I hope they release it in Poland on the same day as everywhere else http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

While I will always praise the development of any game in our beloved flight sim genre. I cannot believe for a moment that this new game will silence any of the whiners that are on this forum.

Can any of us really expect that this game will have better fm fidelity that the il2 series?

12-23-2004, 04:09 PM
I used to have Rowans BoB but it never ran well with my old computer. I'll probable buy this one when it comes out. It has some interesting features and I love flying BoB.

I'd be careful judging the final game by that 109 cockpit shot. It looks like the picture has been rendered using the 3D design programs global illumination shader that adds nice soft shadows and definition to the textures. In game it will probable look about the same as the IL2 109 pit. Of course that's not such a bad thing especially as it supports 6DOF.

12-23-2004, 05:04 PM
This Bf109E cocpit shot is from the game engine. Look at the the textures od J8A from FB. It is made with same techniques - texture backing. Right now it is unfinished (some textures need tweaking and models should be done).

12-23-2004, 05:10 PM

If the AI and AI FM are believable I'll be happy, Battle of Britain all the more better. Figure we may see patch PF 3.03 about the same time http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. While I have enjoyed the IL2 series, the engine is rather dated, no matter how many bells and whistles you add. This will be a definate buy, plus this company has picked up the B17 title, now we may get a decent multiplayer, large bomber sim.

Those are not costs, but an inversion. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
