Edit: I want to correct the information of my original post, which remains below. I was able to obtain the correct file and upload it to the server, so the correct file is available at:
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/il2guide/technical.htm

The server is quite fast, hope it helps some folks get the patch sooner.

Cheers,
Mike

<hr>I have already mirrored what I got from BitTorrent here, just select the link on this page:
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/il2guide/technical.htm

The BitTorrent downloaded it in a matter of seconds. The file size is right, but since I can't test it I can't 100% guarantee that it's correct, so although my server is very fast it is wiser to only download from my site if you can't get a decent speed from anywhere else. If anyone uses my site to download and the patch works, please let me know in this thread or by email (see the site) that it does work, thanks. If for any reason the file is incorrect I will take it down as soon as I can.

By the way, I didn't post a direct link to the patch from here because I want a rough idea of how many people use my site for the download.

<hr>
With everybody worrying about getting the patch, installing it and trying everything out as fast as they can, has anyone thought about how they will go about installing the patch? Are you simply going to install it right over top of the current installation, or install it in a parallel folder, as was possible in IL-2?

Which is wiser?

Cheers,
Mike

To install the patch....Unzip the patch into anywhere you like....then highlight all the icons in that unzipped package and paste them into your FB folder....overwrite them btw

That's not what I meant. What you describe is installing the patch over your current version of FB. What if you want to compare the two? Will you uninstall the patched version and reinstall the original? I have two versions of IL-2 on my hard-drive: the original boxed version and the most recent patched version. I am considering installing a parallel version of FB as well.

Anyone have thoughts?

Mike

Bit Torrent is a 3k network deal that makes you part of a file sharing network of users. It lets you get the patch from other users to distribute the load. It also uses your PC as part of the net.

43 meg in seconds... no way, that was 3k!

I wish I had thought to do that, after I realized that the servers I regularly play on havent upgraded yet. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Noooo...

BitTorrent will create a file of the right size right away, and fill it with chunks of the real file from the clients it gets in the .torrent file from the server.

It will also share the parts of the file you already got with other clients. (Scratch lengthy explanation of the BitTorrent protocol - look at their pages at sourceforge.net)

The file is *NOT* complete after a few seconds (unless you got incredible bandwith)

Okay, thanks for the info. I remember vaguely reading on the topic before, but it didn't seem right. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Anyway I had in my haste overlooked a couple of the mirrors and I was able to download it in a couple of minutes from one of them. That version is now online on the page I linked in the original post. I'm glad I didn't directly link the file.

Thanks again and I am positive that the file is correct. Hope it will be useful to some folks, the server is extremely fast.

Cheers,
Mike

I installed the patch at home. Over cable it downloaded at over 100kB/sec, overall download time of something like 5 minutes or less. Now I can confirm that the version on my server works. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

Bump, for those who are still looking for a good download place. Several people on the SimHQ forum used it, especially modem users.

Cheers,
Mike
