Looking externally at the Beaufighter Mk. 21 the attachment point for 500 lbers seems to be on the wings, whereas AFAIK a fuselage attachment point was more common (there is conflicting evidence over whether the Mk. 21 did sometimes use wing points, though).

Anyone have better information?

The information I have on the aircraft show that the bomb racks were originally introduced in the Mk VIC as a modification and standardized on the MkX. They could be used to hold one 250lb per rack or be used to hold the zero length rocket launchers. The centerline rack appears to have been used strictly for torpedoes.

It's hard to find definitive information on the 21 as most of the information I have is for UK production (VI and X). The 21 was basically the body and tail of a VI and the engines of the X, plus changes such as the autopilot and revised armament.

On the VI and X the single centreline rack (torpedo) rack could alternatively hold a drop tank (200 gallons). It was also possible on the VI and X to carry two 500lb bombs on fuselage points (no torpedo available when these were carried).

As far as I know the VIC wing racks were rated only for 250lb bombs. Those of the TF Mk. X (at least later Xs) were rated for 1000lb bombs. I've not seen any evidence to suggest a total 3000lb bomb load could be carried, though.

Who said anything about 3,000lbs of bombs?

Noone said anything about 3000lbs of bombs apart from me. I was just adding a little extra trivia: the fact that AFAIK despite the later TF Mk. X having wings rated for 1000lbs each, and two 500lb fuselage points, I have found no reference to it being able to carry a 3000lb bombload.

Gottcha, I've still never seen bombs mounted on a Mk21's center rack.

I've seen pics of the TF. Mk. X with 2 500lb bombs mounted on the centre line (much like on the Bf. 110) and I've seen text references to it being done on the Mk. 21, and the 21 was sort of a mix of the VIc and Mk. X, but I don't have any pics of the fuselage 500lb mounts on the Mk. 21 in any books I have. I've been looking online to see if I can turn anything up but no luck so far. So it might be that the centreline rack wasn't used.
