Hi.
It's about time to let the cat out of the bag.

bird_brain and I are working together on a new 50-60 mission campaign.

The Battle over Malta

It will start in mid 1941 flying Hurricanes and covers defence against the Italians, the return of the Luftwaffe for Christmas & a stint in Spitfires through the Summer until the Luftwaffe pulls back to Italy.

Here're some screenshots to whet your appetites:-

Great idea for a campaign. Will this be for FB alone or the merged install of FB+PF? I was just wondering if it would be possible to have carriers involved like in the real campaign, though I realise this may slow everything down. I was recently reading about the Malta air-battles and George Beurling and it all really caught my imagination. I also remember watching a film (I think it was called 'The Malta Story') many years back which had some great footage of Spitfires diving through the formations of enemy bombers. Great stuff! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I've redone the Japanese campaign for the North and South pack. (not published though...)

I've redone elements of "Two little DUCs" to allow for a combined FB+AEP+PF installation.

Otherwise no I have no plans to do that.

How far into the war does the campaign go? About 1943 or so??

And when we get the mossies, would a PR campaign be possible you think?? I think mossies did PR stuff from Malta, or am I mistaken?

Anyway, looking forward to the campaign!!!

What map is that Extreme One? I have never noticed a town or small city that looks like that on any map.

I'm curious about mission/campaign building. When making new campaigns like you are doing now with Malta are you restricted to the maps that are within the game? I had not seen these maps in the screenshots, with the forts, harbors and island villages (at work can't check in the game atm).

Can mission builders create their own maps with new models?

Extreme_One
02-22-2005, 11:31 AM
What you're seeing is an existing map which has literally hundreds of objects added to it.
bird_brain alone can tell you how many hours he's spent.

Flying over that Harbour is a joy to behold. The screenshots barely do it justice.

My contribution so far has been to layout Luqa airfield and create some Hurricane and Spitfire skins.

There's still quite a bit of work left to do...

When I last checked, there were over 4000 objects placed to make up the harbor, but it only has about 40 different objects so it does not seem to impact frame rates too badly. I am not going to make any attempt to count hours on this one 'cause it would only confirm my wife's suspicions that I am not quite "right". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Only up until the "Torch" landings in North Africa in 1942. That was basically the end of the Siege... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

In regards to a PR campaign, they flew from Malta over Sicily to scout out the bomber raids over Italian airbases. The only drawback to the map we are using is that it does not have a provision for the Italian Coast. If I figure out how to fix that one, I will let you know. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Wow!!!

That looks great!!!!

I rarely fly offline, but this could get me there.
No Gladiators though... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Also, I did fly the original North and South, and really enjoyed it, well, except that the ending was a little bit of a let down. I am very interested in your update of it.
In fact I use the "Kimigayo" sound file from it to replace the "Japanese" theme music for PF.

No the camo is not different...light gray below and sea gray/slate gray above. I have found conflicting statements regarding that part as well and many believe they were painted in green & brown above instead of the Fleet Air Arm colors. It is hard to tell since there are no color photos.

I had seen them before, but I marked it off to an incorrect restoration by the museum. I was referring to the ID on the specific plane. I will post the pic when I can scan it, but I am still convinced they were slate grey & sea gray on the upper fuselage as opposed to grey & green. I am not sure anyone can clear it up now, unless they actually saw them. Is your Dad still around these days? now as for the camo well they werw painted sky gery on the bottom with sea grey and green camo pattern on it found that this afternoon as well on the net let me look to see if i can find the link for you <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
<span class="ev_code_RED">Is your Dad still around these days? well unfortunately he passed away almost 4 years ago now so we can't get any info on the real colours and you don't need to be excused for asking http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
from everything i have read though they did retain there naval camo pattern and if you look at the pics of "Faith" in the malta museum it is in those colours sea grey and green and sky grey on the bottom but as you said there is no way to know for sure now they look good as they are

Sorry mate was thinking the pattern of camo was different , not colours which I think you have correct, very difficult to get authenticity with so few records of historic planes which makes your work so interesting- here are a few sources in case you have missed them, thanks again for work so far

Yes it was..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif
The story goes like this. 24 Gladiators were packed up in England before the war by the Fleet Air Arm and put on a ship bound for Malta. 6 were then transferred to Egypt for the defense of Alexandria where the RAF painted them over with desert camoflage.

The other 18 were assembled at Hal Far & flight tested. HMS Glorious brought 3 more back from Alexandria and they were assembled as well. 1 crashed in a training exercise. They were then deployed on the Glorious to go look for the Graf Spee. After the invasion of Poland, they were recrated & sent back to Malta on a freighter.
On March 30, 1940, 18 of the fighters were flown from Malta back to the Glorious which was near the Island headed for the North Sea and taht left 20 on the Island in storage. RAF command at Luqa was given permission to assemble 4 and use them for air defense of the Island.
Since they were Fleet Air Arm planes with arrestor hooks & all, everyone is sure that they were painted the Grey camo pattern. The rub is that they were taken over by the RAF and some think they were repainted at that time with the green/grey pattern.
Here is the only photo I have seen of all 3 together at the same time;

http://jyarbrough.homestead.com/FH_C.jpg

That would be Faith on the left, Hope in the middle, & Charity behind them. If they were in Fleet Air Arm colors, they would have looked like this;

http://jyarbrough.homestead.com/Charity_Plate.jpg

I have already seen the links that have been posted and sifted through a bunch of stuff on the internet, but I personally do not believe they were repainted until after things calmed down and they had alot more time on their hands..... If anyone can show me anything different, I would love to see it, but I can not tell from the B&W photos whether it is green or gray. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

441Spyder...you will notice there are no fuselage #s on 5520 or 5531. The fourth plane they assembled was #5524 which crashed on landing while training.

One of History's Mysteries I guess. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

edit.. After looking closer @ the picture, I think Hope had a yellow border on the roundel too, it is just smaller & darker.

I've been holidaying to Malta for the last 2 years- it's a fascinating place and the Malta Air Museum is a superb little museum run by the most dedicated team of enthusiasts. Last year I was introduced to Jack Vowles who was the groundcrewman of W/C Adrian Warburton, the famous PR pilot of Malta fame. I also met Clive Denney of the Vintage Fabrics aircraft restoration company who flies a Hurricane in his spare time and was responsible for the respray of Malta's preserved Hurricane(an incredible feat of restoration considering it was bought up from the bottom of the sea and will soon be in taxiing condition!-even the Brownings are working) I will be going in September this year to witness the return of a Spitfire and Hurricane from the UK flying over Grand Harbour for the first time since the filming of Malta Story in 1952.Here's the link...http://www.merlinsovermalta.com/ Cheers everyone and thanks for the hard work.

yes i would agree about hope and the yellow on the roundel it is there and is definatly a darker yellow or (perhaps blue having looked closer at the pic not convinced it's yellow but perhaps blue to thicken up the outer blue ring as there were 2 similar roundel's but 1 had a thinner outer ring of blue )
again who knows for sure they still look good as they are and are as close as you can get them without a colour photo of them
as for the camo colours well it's anybodies guess i think there great the way they are

i also knew about N5524 and it's crash and also that there were no #'s on faith or hope
charity was the only #'ed plane as far as i can tell
the malta in restoration pic shows a # but i think that was added by the person restoring it

as for the orignal question i still think i got it right as HOPE and all i really want to do is test fly the campaign for you when it's ready http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think I'll make a "merge" mission files option next for MetaMis http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif - when I think of all the work that went into this http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif - it would be nice sometimes if you could e.g. insert/merge whole airfields into a new mission http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif static objects and all - just an example...
or just share the work... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I was at Malta 3 weeks ago, there was an airshow running that weekend and with a special event they called "Merlins over Malta", 1 Hurricane and 1 Spitfire flew in from Duxford and made a really fantastic performace, i was stunned over the spitfire. 2 weeks before that i was in Duxford for the Battle of Britain airshow, amazing as well, we saw 11 spifires fly together in formation, totally amazing, we had some bad weather but it's was ok.
One of the spitfires at duxford, blue painted Mark V didn't get up in the air, due to some problem but when i came to Malta "she" was there and i was told that she had been painted the day before the duxford airshow and when the rain came the painting started to tear off. The pilot s name was Charlie Brown and he was a real gentleman.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

At Malta there was a BF-108 "Taifun" that did a really nice performance and at the end of that show the called out that there was a spare seat on the way back to UK, lucky guy that got that ride home, i'm from Sweden and didn't have the possibilty to take that seat, but it would have been something to remember... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Dear Bird Brain

I have been playing your Malta mini-campaign and have to say how much I have enjoyed it. It is one of the few campaigns that I have survived so far although you seem to have built in one or two very sceptical intelligence officers. In a very sweaty palmed dogfight over the airfield (Hal Far?) I got 2 CR-42s and only got credited for one. I shot a G.50 down into Grand Harbour and have not been credited with it. Surely this game deserves a Malta map. We now have pretty much the entire aircraft set for it except for the SM-79 which is a big gap. It is particularly unusual in that we have virtually all the British aircraft - Gladiator, Hurricane, Spitfire, Blenheim and Beaufighter perhaps only wanting the Baltimore which is pretty esoteric even by Il2/PF standards. When the Germans become involved we have Bf-109F, Ju87, Ju88 and HeIII (not even sure about the latter without checking)

I was in Malta in the 1960s as a teenager when memories of the siege were fairly fresh and got taken round the Valetta area by a Maltese gentleman who had been there at the time. Also remember a squadron of Shackletons taking off from Hal Far (I think). The noise of that many Griffons was earthshaking. Quite a tricky mission for the Germans to take out a carrier in Grand Harbour. I look forward to defending that one and as you may imagine have something of a soft spot for a Malta map and campaign.

Good hunting
Ouston

Just came upon this thread and will take the opportunity to agree with Ouston about the Malta map...when or if this game gets the Malta map..it will surely get me immersed into this game all over again..at the moment with exams and work I can't play much but a Malta map would really make me go nuts..Just thinking about flying over Grand Harbour in a Hurri/Spit sends a shiver hehe...

Looking ffffffffoooooooorrrrrrrrrwaaaaaaaard !!!!!!
